EBERSOLE Hello, Coupeville Elementary School Families! We are off to a M A R C H 1 4 great start with our hybrid, in-person learning and I want to thank each and every one of our families for your commitment to your student’s education during this pandemic. I know it has not been easy for any of us, but your patience, perseverance, and partnership with us has been inspiring. Thank you. As we continue in the hybrid, in-person model, it will be important that we continue to be vigilant about our mitigation efforts, such as wearing a mask, social distancing, and washing and sanitizing our hands frequently. Another key is to keep your student home when they are feeling under the weather. In January we talked about PERSEVERANCE and in February we began talking about EMPATHY. We will be wrapping up our lessons on Empathy in mid-March and continue with HONESTY and then COURAGE later in April. Each lesson ends with a story. I’ve found some really great books to illustrate Perseverance like The Thing Lou Couldn’t Do by Ashley Spires and How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers. For Empathy lessons, I read Stand in My Shoes by Bob Sornson and The Sandal Artist by Kathleen Pelley. Most of these books are available at our local public library if you want to check them out yourselves. The definition we are using for HONESTY is “living truthfully in your words, actions and thoughts”. Some conversation starters to try at home include: 1. When is it most difficult for you to tell the truth? 2. How important is it to you that your friends are honest? When your friends are dishonest, how does it make you feel? What should you do about it? The definition we are using for COURAGE is “to choose what is good, right and kind, even when it is hard or scary”. Two conversation starters to try at home are: 1. Talk with your child about what used to frighten you as a child. Be open about how you courageously worked to overcome that fear. Talk about who helped you or what strategy helped you along the way. 2. Talk about the things that frighten you as an adult today. Open up an honest conversation about how you work intentionally to show Courage often. Talking with our students about these character words is so fun. I am always amazed at how insightful students can be, even at six years old! You may be amazed at the conversations you will have using the above ideas, or some of your own starters.
