Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

MUSIC RECOMMENDATION ALGORITHMS Music Recommendation Algorithms: Discovering Weekly or Discovering Weakly? Jennie Silber Muhlenberg College, Allentown, PA, USA Media & Communication Department Undergraduate High Honors Thesis April 1, 2019 1 MUSIC RECOMMENDATION ALGORITHMS 2 MUSIC RECOMMENDATION ALGORITHMS Abstract This thesis analyzes and assesses the cultural impact and economic viability that the top music streaming platforms have on the consumption and discovery of music, with a specific focus on recommendation algorithms. Through the support of scholarly and journalistic research as well as my own user experience, I evaluate the known constructs that fuel algorithmic recommendations, but also make educated inferences about the variables concealed from public knowledge. One of the most significant variables delineated throughout this thesis is the power held by human curators and the way they interact with algorithms to frame and legitimize content. Additionally, I execute my own experiment by creating new user profiles on the two streaming platforms popularly used for the purpose of discovery, Spotify and SoundCloud, and record each step of the music discovery process experienced by a new user. After listening to an equal representation of all genre categories within each platform, I then compare the genre, release year, artist status, and content promotion gathered from my listening history to the algorithmically-generated songs listed in my ‘Discover Weekly’ and ‘SoundCloud Weekly’ personalized playlists. The results from this experiment demonstrate that the recommendation algorithms that power these discovery playlists intrinsically facilitate the perpetuation of a star- driven, “winner-take-all” marketplace, where new, popular, trendy, music is favored, despite how diverse of a selection the music being listened to is.

On the Connection Between Law and Justice, by Anthony D'Amato,* 26 U. C. Davis L. Rev. 527-582 (1992-93) Abstract: What does it mean to assert that judges should decide cases according to justice and not according to the law? Is there something incoherent in the question itself? That question will serve as our springboard in examining what is—or should be—the connection between justice and law. Legal and political theorists since the time of Plato have wrestled with the problem of whether justice is part of law or is simply a moral judgment about law. Nearly every writer on the subject has either concluded that justice is only a judgment about law or has offered no reason to support a conclusion that justice is somehow part of law. This Essay attempts to reason toward such a conclusion, arguing that justice is an inherent component of the law and not separate or distinct from it.

Savoy 1 The New Culture Industry Tracing democratization, cultural pluralism, and a new ‘stillness’ in modern music Augie Savoy Professor Jennifer Friedlander 9/28/20 Savoy 2 PREFACE In this country, it’s very hard for creative thought to escape capitalism. —Juan Atkins I have the impression that many of the elements that are supposed to provide access to music actually impoverish our relationship with it. —Michel Foucault As a listener, my earliest memory of music is hearing Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall on a portable CD player when I went to pre-school in Norway. Because my family had recently moved there, I had no experience speaking Norwegian and, until I figured it out, my parents thought I could listen to music to pass the time. For better or worse, it did far more than that. It started my love affair with music. On the surface, Off the Wall was straight to the point, ener- getic, and loud. As I replayed it, I realized that I could stick my head into the production and hear all the small details. The drums were rigid and robotic. The bass was relaxed and fluid. Michael Jackson’s voice was elastic, traveling across an entire emotional spectrum from tender to harsh. The production felt like a spectrum of different faces and characters. It was the storytelling and humanness of the record that made it compelling. It turned an uneventful day in pre-school, sur- rounded by kids I couldn’t understand, into a cinematic piece of art. Like Michael Jackson’s legacy, however, my relationship to music has become more complicated as I’ve gotten older.

How Queer Identities Have Progressed Within the Music Industry History of queer identity within the music industry The recent trend towards more visibility in the music industry is enigmatic of a larger trend as the pride movement gained momentum. The Stonewall Riots of 1969 marked a turning point in queer identity, demanding rights and protection against police brutality - paticularly towards gay men and trans women of colour. The Stonewall Riots launched queer identity into the public mainstream, and for the first time queer idenity was not only legalised in the UK but also visible. This started in the rock scene of the 1970s, a genre characterised by it’s defiance of the mainstream. Naturally in such a unbashidely indivalidsitic environment like rock, queer idenity flourished, although still when it reached mainstream it had to be censored behind metaphors and slights of hand. The most famous example of rock’s queer sexuality was Queen, fronted by queer icon Freddie Mercury, although the full extent of his queer idenitity within his music is often debated. One popular interpretation of Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen’s three part rock ballad, is that it’s a song about a gay or queer man coming out, being rejected, and then coming into his own – not proud in spite of their sexuality, but because of it. As comedian Guy Branum wrote in his memoir My Life As a Goddess, later posted to pitchfork in 2018, “Bohemian Rhapsody is a breakup song for your mum,”1 in an article when he links his own fraught coming out with his parents to the murder depicted in the song.

Her hit song “Love songs” quickly became a fan favorite amongst teens after her song blew up on many popular social media platforms such as Tiktok, Twitter, Instagram ect… The song is about how her previous girlfriend gave her the urge to sing love songs for her. I see the relation to Maya when I compare how Maya feels about Claire. Clairo “Sofia” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZSSHWamGk0 Clario is in fact another Female artist that has come out and stated she is apart of LGBTQ+ community and identifies as Bi-sexual. This song has also become quite the popular song amongst teens after it blew up on Tiktok. Clario has displayed her worth back in 2018 with her song “Hot Cheetos”. “Sofia”, the seventh track and third single from Clairo’s album, Immunity. “Sofia is about Clairo’s first crushes on women such as director Sofia Coppola or actress Sofia Vergara. In this song she talks about a period of time where she was discovering her sexuality. -She states this in her tweet dated July 26 2019 -”Sofia is about my first ever crushes on women I saw in the media. people like sofia coppola, sofia vergara, etc. this was my way of making a celebratory song about this discovery while maintaining the cheesy/corny lyrics you'd normally find in songs where you profess your love.” This relates to Maya cause this is might be the same way she found out she was gay when she was younger.
