Ameri- cans spend over 230 billion dollars annually on repairing cars damaged in those Tcrashes. At best, says Robert “Bubba” Smith, “A car crash can be a major inconve- nience.” Smith should know. He is the owner of County Line Collision at 2400 New Dorset Circle in Powhatan. He’s been doing auto body work for nearly twenty years. “It was something I was interested in as a kid,” says Smith, who lives with his wife and son in Powhatan. Even in high school, he had studied auto body repair at the Chesterfield Tech Center. Smith says the auto body repair business has changed dramatically in recent years. He re- fers to the inclusion of ADAS in automobiles as being one of the major reasons that collision repair has become so much more complex. ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. If you have a later model car, you’re probably familiar with what the systems do even if you didn’t know the name. ADAS is one of the reasons that folks, today, are driving motorized computers. We want our customers to be kept in the loop so that they will understand just what goes on between our shop and the insurance company.” Smith says such transparency is often lacking and that is not in the best inter- est of the customer.
