One compelling paradigm of scholarship to emerge has illustrated the interplay between piety and violence in Counter-Reformation France. Inspired by Natalie Zemon Davis’s pioneering work on the ‘Rites of Violence’ in the 1970s, historians documented the militant Catholic cultures characterized by combat against Protestantism and sin, especially during the French Wars of Religion.1 Led by Philip Benedict, Barbara Diefendorf, and Denis Crouzet in the 1980s and early 1990s, this new historiography revealed how certain theological-emotional dispositions among French Catholics, especially the fear of heresy, God’s wrath, and the End Times, contributed to violence in the era.2 Equally important, this scholarship revealed that many Catholics were simultaneously ‘militants’ and ‘penitents’, waging war not only on Huguenots, but also on themselves, through severe penitential mortification.3 Since the late 1990s, studies have continued to explore the nexus between devotion and violence, as a new cadre of scholars has examined liturgy, printed religious propaganda, and preaching within militant French Catholicism.4 Despite the contributions of this historiography, one weakness has been the absence of commensurate examination of nonmilitant and 1 Natalie Zemon Davis, ‘The Rites of Violence: Religious Riot in Sixteenth-Century France’, Past and Present, 59 (1973), 53-91. 2 Philip Benedict, Rouen during the Wars of Religion (New York: Cambridge University Press, 1981); Denis Crouzet, Les guerriers de Dieu: la violence au temps des troubles de religion, vers 1525-vers 1610, 2 vols (Seyssel: Champ Vallon, 1990); Barbara B. To be sure, there is excellent scholarship on political and legal strategies employed by French Catholics to address the bloodshed of the French Wars of Religion.5 The study of the interplay between piety and nonviolence in early modern French Catholicism, however, remains underdeveloped. This is a significant imbalance, considering that, for large portions of the French Catholic population, religious belief and practice did not result in militancy or severe penitence, and, in some cases, actually produced opposition to them. Indeed, as Diefendorf has acknowledged, there was ‘profound tension within Catholicism, a contest over the nature and practice of the true faith’ in the era of the French Wars of Religion.6 A more recent scholarly trend has begun to redress this imbalance by documenting alternatives to the prevailing militant-penitential piety, especially among dévots in the seventeenth century. Diefendorf, for instance, has shown that in the 1630s, Parisian women practiced works of mercy rather than the aggressive penitence typical of Catholic Leaguers and early dévots.7 Examining the years 1629 to 1645, Anthony D. Wright has revealed pastoral differences between the rigorist ‘proto-Jansenists’ and the Society of Jesus, which took a more forgiving approach to confession and the Eucharist.8 Recently, Alison Forrestal has illustrated how, from the 1620s to the 1650s, Vincent de Paul and the Lazarists drew on the virtue of charity far more than on hostility toward Protestants.9 This book contributes to this emerging historiography by exploring nonmilitant sites within French Catholicism even earlier, during the French Wars of Religion (1562-1629) themselves. This study also selects as its primary object of inquiry the spiritual evolution of one Catholic priest, François de Sales (1567-1622),

By examining the diverse, and sometimes conflicting, opinions that Catholic censors expressed on Bodin’s text and the ‘errors’ it contained, the essay shows that even a relatively cohesive ‘reading community’ such as that of Counter-Reformation censors could nurture fundamental disagreement in evaluating the content and dangerousness of a book, as well as in devising appropriate countermeasures.

Mantova gonzaghesca; Roma giulia ; Ferrara estense: Renaissance humanist and tutor Recent scholarship has identified Antonio Possevino's family as New Christians admitted to the learned circles of the court of Renaissance Mantua and its Gonzaga dukes. His father was Piemontese from Asti and moved to Mantua where he joined the guild of goldsmiths. The family name was changed from Cagliano (Caliano) and his marriage produced three three sons, Giovanni Battista, Antonio and Giorgio. His mother nursed her son Antonio in 1533 together with Francesco III Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua 1540-1550. His learned older brother, Giovanni Battista Possevino (1522-1552) arrived in the mid-1540s in Rome of Paul III Farnese, first in the service of the Mantuan cardinal reformer Gregorio Cortese , then of the papal "cardinal nipote" Alessandro Farnese (cardinal) and finally of cardinal Ippolito II d'Este. Some of his poems are in Elogia virorum illustrium (Florence, 1551) of Paolo Giovio whom whom he frequented humanist court circles. In 1549 at seventeen Antonio came to study with his brother in Rome and met the leading men of letters at the Renaissance court of pope Julius III (1550-1555), the patron of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and the builder of Villa Giulia.

During June of 1580 Edmund Campion and Robert Persons were smuggled into England and worked with marked success until Campion's capture by the English government on July 17, 1581. He was tried for treason and executed December 1, 1581. The treason charges were widely disbelieved in England and on the Continent; indeed the execution caused such resent­ ment throughout Catholic Europe that the English government felt com­ pelled to justify its action. The most important English apology was The Execution of Justice in England, which first appeared anonymously on 1 December 17, 1583 • Its real author was William Cecil, Lord Burghley. An expanded edition was published in 1584; since the English government wanted to present its case to the larger European world as well as to its own subjects, there were Latin, French, Dutch, and probably Italian and 2 German translations as early as 1584 • The news of Campion's execution created considerable stir in far away Poland. Even before Campion's martyrdom the famous Jesuit writer Peter Skarga had incorporated considerable material on the English martyrs in his popular Lives of the Saints of 1579. In 1583 there appeared at Vilna a Polish translation of Campion's Decem Rationes together with a short life of the author3 .

POSSEVINO'S PROBABLE JEWISH ANCESTRY Contrary to the attitudes of many Spaniards, indeed of many Christians of his time, Ignatius of Loyola was entirely without racial anti-Semitism. His desire to be conformed to Christ in the tiniest details even led him to regret he was not born of Jewish blood. During its formative era, unlike many reli­ gious orders of the sixteenth century, the Society of Jesus welcomed Chris­ tians of Jewish descent into its ranks. As is well known, some of Loyola's closest collaborators were of Jewish descent, for instance, Diego Lainez and l Juan Polanco . His autobiography, which was written for publication but remains in manuscript, says nothing about any Jewish background. In 1606, he pub- lished a catechism for soldiers: Żołnierskie nabożeństwo (The soldier’s piety), a book which is commonly said to have been inspired by a catechism by another Jesuit, An- tonio Possevino’s Il soldato christiano (1569). The aim of this article is to compare the two books and to address the following questions: to what extent and in what way was Possevino’s view of soldiers adaptable to Polish-Lithuanian realities? Can we identify a common discourse on soldiers and war in both texts, although they were not written at the same time nor in the same cultural and social context? Or did the strategy of ac- commodation lead to major differences between the texts, making it difficult to speak of a common Jesuit view on soldiers and war? It serves as an introduction to the publication of the Conventus Reformatus on the occasion of celebrating Calvin’s birth 500 years ago. The article follows Calvin’s life, from his birth in Noyon until his death in Geneva. The focus is on persons and events which had a substantial influence on Calvin. Calvin’s theology is discussed in other contributions in this publication. Opsomming Van Noyon tot Genève Hierdie artikel bevat ’n kort biografie van Johannes Calvyn. Dit dien as inleiding tot die gedenkuitgawe van die Konvent van Reformatoriese Kerke by geleentheid van die 500-jarige herdenking van Calvyn se geboorte. Die artikel volg Calvyn se lewensloop vanaf sy geboorte in Noyon tot sy dood in Genève. Daar word veral gefokus op die persone en gebeurtenisse wat Calvyn beïnvloed het.
