Nevada Rescue Results in Extensive Coverage – 1299 Nevada Rescue Results in Extensive Coverage – 1,299 Media Clips – for Civil Air Patrol SUMMARY OVERVIEW The dramatic Dec. 10 rescue of a family of six that had spent two days in sub-zero temperatures in the remote mountains of northwest Nevada has resulted in extensive publicity for Civil Air Patrol. Even before the couple and four children were found alive, CAP was being widely mentioned as a part of the rescue team, thanks to public affairs efforts in Nevada by Wing Commander Col. Tim Hahn and Wing PAO Maj. Thomas Cooper and a news release prepared by NHQ/PA. The search for the group began on the evening of Dec. 8 and continued through most of the night and throughout the next day. A Navy search-and-rescue team and CAP were assisting the sheriff's office by searching a concentrated area where the group was thought to be. That search shifted on Dec. 10 after Maj. Justin Ogden reviewed new cell phone data from the mother’s phone. The family was found in the afternoon by a searcher on the ground. Publicity from the rescue, led by a second NHQ/PA news release, resulted in 1,299 media clips to date, including a live interview with Ogden on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360. He was also quoted extensively in the local newspaper, the Reno Gazette-Journal, in an article entitled “Cellphones used to find missing family in Northern Nevada cold.” Col. Hahn and Maj. Cooper, both of Nevada Wing, were also quoted in numerous follow-up articles, along with Col. Brian Ready, another member of CAP’s cellular forensics team. Hahn’s quote shortly after the family was found alive was used extensively in articles written for The Associated Press. “The mood where I’m at’s ecstatic,” said Hahn, whose wing had six planes searching for the group. “We are thrilled beyond words.” The next morning, on Dec. 11, “Good Morning America” (5 million viewers) aired an ABC News story crediting CAP with playing a vital role in the rescue. And that same day an informative story entitled “Civil Air Patrol expertise sped Nevada rescue” was published on the AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) website. E. B. Du Bois wrote in his widely read Souls of Black Folk of Blacks “born with a veil, and gifted with second-sight in this American world,—a world which yields him no true self-consciousness, but only lets him see him- self through the revelation of the other world” (Du Bois, 1999, pp. 10–11). Du Bois’s metaphor foreshadows the ongoing predicament of the ability and authority of Blacks to engage in systematic critiques of their own social dilemmas. The veil became a metaphor not only for how Blacks came to see themselves, but for the inability of a broader American society to truly see African Americans as they really were.
