Salvaging "Academic Disaster Areas": The Black College Response to Christopher Jencks and David Riesman's 1967 Harvard Educational Review Article Abstract During my junior year at Grambling College, the campus was roiled by the release of an article in Harvard Educational Review. [One of the articles] launched a broadside attack against Black colleges essentially questioning whether these hard-fought for institutions deserved to exist. The article’s publication caused the handful of whites on the faculty to become noticeably uncomfortable and regrettably led some of the colleagues and students to question their fealty to Grambling. -

Policymakers today face many challenges—changes in family formation, poverty and economic in- equality, population aging, growth in the demand for educated workers, and rising health care costs among them. The challenges are deepened by the federal debt which continues to grow every year with no solution in sight. The theme of this year’s conference, “The Golden Age of Evidenced-Based Policy,” is well suited to formulating public policy to deal with these problems while achieving maximum impact using our limited, and in some cases, declining federal resources. -

Burton What is being offered by contemporary socialists are fairy tales, and we should not mistake them for the truth. These portrayals of socialism and their caricature of capitalism are inaccurate, vacuous, and utopian. Socialism takes from those who work, take risks, innovate, educate themselves, or save and gives to those who do not—or to those who have political power. A century ago, at the advent of the Russian Revolution, one could be a socialist and hope in good faith that socialism could achieve, or at least advance, its utopian aspirations. Now, socialism has a long record of dismal failure. However, once various defects in the official poverty measure are corrected, it appears that the proportion of children in households with income below the poverty line probably fell between 1969 and 1989 or between 1967 and 1991. Data from the Consumer Expenditure Survey support this claim, and directmeasures of material hardship also indicate that things have not been worsening for the low income family, although housing and neighborhood crimes remain serious concerns. -
