Rise of the LEGO® Digital Creator While you’ve always been able to build your own physical creations with a bucket of LEGO® bricks, the route to the same level of digital LEGO freedom for fans has taken a bit longer. The latest step in that effort sees the LEGO Group teaming up with Unity Technologies to create a system that doesn’t just allow anyone to make a LEGO video game, it teaches them the process. The Unity LEGO Microgame is the most recent microgame created by Unity with the purpose of getting people to design their own video game. But in this case, the interactive tutorial turns the act of creation into a sort of game in and of itself, allowing players to simply drag and drop LEGO bricks into a rendered scene and use them to populate their vision. Designers can even give their LEGO brick creations life with intelligent bricks that breath functionality into any model to which they’re attached. Users can even create LEGO models outside of the Unity platform using BrickLink Studio, and then simply drop them into their blossoming game. While this is just the beginning of this new Unity-powered toolset for LEGO fans, it’s destined to continue to grow. The biggest idea that could come to the Unity project is the potential ability for a fan to share their LEGO video game creations with one another and vote on which is the best, with an eye toward the LEGO Group officially adopting them and potentially releasing them with some of the profit going back to the creator. -

The Minifig: a Cult Object
The Minifg: A Cult Object (I) By lluisgib Minifgs: lluisgib Maybe because I started to play with LEGO® when I was 6 years old (in 1980), I am unable to imagine LEGO without minifgures. According to the company, it is the second most important design in the history of LEGO, after the brick itself (although I believe that at the moment it surpasses the brick as our collaborator Arqu medes so brilliantly showed in his last Desmontados). The minifg has become a cult object and there are now many people who collect them by theme, for their beauty or their scarcity. In this article I want to focus on the minifgs that are object of desire for many collectors, because they exist in limited numbers or because they are simply outside the established sales circuits. Promotional minifgs In the article on polybags (see HispaBrick Magazine 015) I introduced the subject of these minifgs, as they tend to come in a small plastic bag, as promotional sets. The craziness started in 2007 when someone in marketing (with a cruel strain) thought up the idea of randomly adding a chrome-gold C-3PO to 10,000 Star Wars sets to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the frst flm. This promotion was available only in the USA, causing considerable angry reactions from fans in other parts of the world. The minifg instantly turned into a much desired object by thousands of LEGO and/or Star Wars® fans around the world. There are reports of fans with electronic scales, searching for boxes that weighed a little more to fnd the much sought after treasure.
