While some of Zaini’s origi- nal works of art are displayed in the hall, some others are part of museum collections. Dr Mohammed, who has 145 paint- ings by his father in his personal collection, said he was still sur- prised to discover paintings by his father which he had never seen before. H E Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari, the Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage, who knew Zaini personally, said the passing of the painter had left a void in Qatar’s art scene, but his huge volume of work would remain a beacon for artists and art enthusiasts. “We are here to honour one of Qatar’s great names. He left us, but his work will stay with us. He will remain influential with the quality and diversity of his works, from which the current and coming genera- tions will benefit,” he said at the opening of the hall. Dr Al Kuwari expressed admiration for Zaini’s dedica- tion to the Qatari art movement and his lifelong devotion to cre- ating paintings that reflected Qatar’s development, particu- larly the socio-cultural aspect of it. “Our life in Qatar is linked The Sea to the land and the sea and our 1972 culture is based on these two factors, and this man reflected them very clearly in his paint- ings. Also, he spent a lot of his time immortalizing Qatar’s famous men, especially poets and writers, and their portraits, which tell of specific periods in our history, have now become an essential part of our cultural heritage,” the minister said. Dr Al Kuwari was referring to the nearly 70 portraits of poets and writers from Qatar and the Gulf region which Zaini did in one and a half years. The huge collection featured in an expo two years ago titled ‘Knights of Poetry’, held as part of the Capital of programme. ew Year is a time for fresh starts, hopes, dreams and saying goodbye to the old year. At this time of festive camaraderie and reflection, online travel adviser Cheapflights offers its Top 10 favourite New NYear traditions from across the globe. 1. GERMANY & FINLAND How about a spot of fortune telling to ring in the New Year? Molybdomancy is an ancient technique of divination that involves inter- preting the shapes made by dropping molten lead into cold water. On New Year’s Eve in Germany and Finland, family and friends come together for a spot of lead pouring - Bleigießen in German and uudenvuo- dentina in Finnish - and make predictions for the coming year. It isn’t an exact science and there are no firm rules on what the shapes actually represent. A bubbly surface can mean money is coming your way; a broken shape misfortune. Ships refer to travelling; a ball means luck; a monkey says beware of false friends; and a hedgehog means someone is jealous of you. But don’t get too worried if you receive a bad fortune - the predictions are just for fun.

2. MEXICO In Mexico, families celebrate New Year’s (Vispera de Año Nuevo) with a mix of religion, tradition, superstition and special festive foods. Families decorate their homes in colours that represent wishes for the upcoming year: red for love, yellow for work and green for money. For even more wishes, Mexicans eat a grape (preferably seedless) with each of the 12 clock chimes at the stroke of midnight, while making a wish with each grape. To start the year with a clean slate, another tradition involves writing a list of all the bad and unhappy events that happened over the year, then before midnight the list is thrown into a fire and the negative feelings of the past year are gone. Tablet as teacher: Poor Ethiopian kids learn ABCs

By Jason Straziuso

he kids in this volcano-rim village wear filthy, ragged clothes. They sleep beside cows and sheep in huts made of sticks and Tmud. They don’t go to school. Yet they all can chant the English alphabet, and some can spell words. The key to their success: 20 tablet computers dropped off in their Ethiopian village in February by a group called One Laptop Per Child. The goal is to find out whether children using today’s new technology can teach themselves to read in places where no schools or teachers exist. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology research- ers analysing the project data say they’re already startled. “What I think has already happened is that the kids have already learned more than they would have in one year of kindergarten,” said Matt Keller, who runs the Ethiopia programme. The fastest learner is 8-year-old Kelbesa Negusse, the first to turn on one of the Motorola Xoom tab- lets last February. Its camera was disabled to save memory, yet within weeks Kelbesa had figured out the tablet’s workings and made the camera work. He proclaimed himself a lion, a marker of accom- plishment in Ethiopia. On a recent sunny weekday, nine months into the project, the kids sat in a dark hut with a hay floor. HYPER SUDOKU How to play Kakuro: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.
