The Institute works to strengthen the family through the development and dissemination of high quality research on Arab fam- ilies, encouraging knowledge exchange on issues relevant to the family and making the family a priority to policy makers through advocacy and outreach at the national, regional and international levels. Among the Institute’s most important initiatives are the Annual Conference on the Family; and the OSRA Research Grant in collaboration with the Qatar National Research Fund, an annual research grant which encourages research related to the Arab family and family policy. Malki, Exec- utive Director of DIFI, whose insightful comments were invaluable to the project and without whose precious support this research would not have been possible. 10 FOREWORD Families all over the globe are currently experiencing dramatic transfor- mations and Arab families are no exception. Unprecedented political turmoil, economic challenges, and rapid sociocultural changes in the Arab region continue to shake the existing social fabric and threaten the well-being of families. Despite this, the institution of the family remains the backbone of Arab society and serves as the primary source of support and aid for its members. Research indicates that families living in the most difficult circumstances draw upon a rich set of characteristics, or ‘family strengths’, that enable them to nurture their members and continue to prosper in the face of even the most extreme adversity. Family strengths not only contribute to family cohesion and foster the individual growth and well-being of all family members, but also have positive benefits for communities and societies as a whole. By conducting this study, the Doha International Family Institute contributes to efforts to shift the research on families in the Arab World from a deficit-centered approach that highlights prob- lems and pathology to a strengths-based perspective that identifies and draws upon the strengths of family members, community and culture. Through the lens of the international family strengths perspective, this report explores the strengths, whether individual, family, community, or culturally based, that families in Qatar, Jordan, and Tunisia employ when facing a variety of social, financial, and health-related challenges. The insights shared herein on the characteristics that distinguish healthy, successful families in the Arab world can be used by families, communi- ties, policy makers, and governmental entities to inform strategies and programs aimed to strengthen families throughout the region. The purpose of this paper is to review the challenges and achieve- ments of the newly emerging Qatar healthcare system. Methods: PubMed was searched using MESH terms: Qatar, healthcare, medical development, medical insurance and medical history. Websites of the World Bank, CIA fact book, Qatar Ministry of Health, Hamad Medical Corporation, Organiza- tion for Economic Co-operation and Development and the US State department were searched for information about Qatar’s healthcare system and its history. Results: Qatar is a rapidly growing, multicultural country with over 80 nationalities represented. Qatar has developed a healthcare system with universal coverage. Up until 2014, the government has subsidized all care. There are plans to develop a medical insurance system.

This condition be- comes even more sophisticated when a global sports event is managed, especially when it is hosted by a country that does not have the essential infrastructure and tourism foundation. The objective of this paper, therefore, is to describe how Qatar is aggressively working to accommodate a successful World Cup in 2022, and then to explore the marketing challenges that face Qatar in effectively promoting its event at the international level.     New exhibition of Mathaf Collection presenting over 100 years of modern and contemporary art opens in Doha Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha dedicates the first floor of the museum to a new display of its permanent collection, opening on 1 November 2014. Entitled Mathaf Collection, Summary, Part 1, the exhibition presents over 100 artists from the museum’s collection of more than 8,000 works, that continues to grow with new acquisitions and commissions from Mathaf exhibitions. The exhibition includes work from Qatar and the Arab world, Iran, Turkey and other regions historically connected to the Arab Peninsula, reflecting a multitude of artistic directions and contexts. This exhibition also contributes to developing research into the collection and its interconnections with contemporary cultures that is also present online in the Encyclopedia of Modern Art and the Arab World, developed by Mathaf. During its period of development, the State of Qatar worked on large megaprojects designed to attract global investments and tourists. Also, the current process of globalization has greatly contributed to increasing competition between cities and promoting the development of public art within new urban developments. This research study discusses the role of public art in influencing urban environments in Qatar, namely within Katara Cultural Village. The study explores the extent to which such an approach can raise local communities’ environmental awareness as an indirect input to the process of upgrading the desires of those living in these areas and of international tourists. In addition, it reviews the experiences of different types of catalysts for regeneration, such as art and culture, that can enhance the built environment’s recognition, value, and economic growth. A qualitative evaluation is employed for this research study, which leverages subjective methods such as interviews and observations to collect substantive and relevant data while examining the interaction of connectivity, attraction, and development as they relate to economics and other multifaceted aspects of development.

King, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This dissertation argues that in order to explain the political stability of Qatar amid the region-wide tumult of the Arab Spring, we must go beyond classic rentier state explanations of economic buyoff of the citizenry. Qatar, an extremely resource-rich country with no obvious characteristics of instability, should be a crucial case study for rentier state theory. Instead, however, we see clear evidence that a significant portion of the Qatari population is dissatisfied with the economic allocations offered by the state. Further, there appears to be little correlation between economic satisfaction and political acquiescence, with even those who are satisfied still desiring more say in government decisions and public life. Even more importantly, we see the state acting and reacting in ways that are antithetical to the classic theory—such as spending time, money, and energy promoting legitimacy in noneconomic ways, and reversing state-led policies in the face of societal backlash—which depicts a society with significantly more agency and influence on the state than previously theorized. By using an in-depth study of Qatar, this dissertation shows that economic allocation is a necessary but not sufficient condition of a rentier state’s political legitimacy formula.
