Winneg & Kathleen Hall Jamieson Colbert Super PAC - 2 Stephen Colbert’s Civics Lesson: How Colbert Super PAC Taught Viewers about Campaign Finance Abstract This study tests whether exposure to The Colbert Report influenced knowledge of super PACs and 501(c)(4) groups, and ascertains how having such knowledge influenced viewers’ perceptions about the role of money in politics. Our analysis of a national random sample of adults interviewed after the 2012 presidential election found that viewing The Colbert Report both increased peoples’ perception of how knowledgeable they were about super PACs and 501(c)(4) groups and increased actual knowledge of campaign finance regulation regarding these independent expenditure groups. Findings suggest that the political satirist was more successful in informing his viewers about super PACs and 501(c)(4) groups than were other types of news media. Viewing The Colbert Report also indirectly influenced how useful his audience perceived money to be in politics. Andrew Cuomo – He’s Not the Worst #MeToo Man But his PR is Near the Bottom Andrew Blum When you look at all the #MeToo men who did bad things to women – and some to men – there are gradations of evil. Al Franken is not Harvey Weinstein, and Louis CK is not Jeffrey Epstein. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a relatively recent addition to the #MeToo list, acted very badly to 11 women, according to a just completed investigation but he’s not worst. What he is horrible at was spinning the probe and its findings. All during the investigation, he held public events like nothing was wrong, often not letting the press attend or ask questions. Then on August 3, after New York Attorney General Letitia James released a 165-page report accusing him of the sexual harassment, he released a pre-recorded video in which he showed no remorse, did not apologize, issued a flat-out tone-deaf denial, made no admission of his behavior, and sounded like he never heard of #MeToo or sexual harassment. He refused to resign. This prompted all his local, state and federal allies among Democratic Party officialdom, voters, unions and donors to all but desert him in the face of almost certain impeachment by the state legislature. They all called for him to resign – right up to and including President Biden. About the only person who said Cuomo should not resign was Rudy Giuliani! I think it is because of the #MeToo movement and thePR ramifications of the bad behavior of powerful men of his ilk that Cuomo received such a public and political rebuke of his actions after the report issued by the NY Attorney General. -

Thank you so, so much! 2 | C h a n g STEPHEN COLBERT’S SUPER PAC AND THE GROWING ROLE OF COMEDY IN OUR POLITICAL DISCOURSE Abstract: Comedy plays an increasingly legitimate role in the American political discourse as figures such as Stephen Colbert effectively use humor and satire to scrutinize politics and current events, and encourage the public to think more critically about how our government and leaders rule. In his response to the Supreme Court case of Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (2010) and the rise of Super PACs, Stephen Colbert has taken the lead in critiquing changes in campaign finance. This study analyzes segments from The Colbert Report and the Colbert Super PAC, identifying his message and tactics. This paper aims to demonstrate how Colbert pushes political satire to new heights by engaging in real life campaigns, thereby offering a legitimate voice in today’s political discourse. INTRODUCTION While political satire is not new, few have mastered this art like Stephen Colbert, whose originality and influence have catapulted him to the status of a pop culture icon. Never breaking character from his zany, blustering persona, Colbert has transformed the way Americans view politics by using comedy to draw attention to important issues of the day, critiquing and unpacking these issues in a digestible way for a wide audience. -

Reporter Privilege: A Con Job or an Essential Element of Democracy Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility Public Scholar Presentation November 14, 2007 Two widely divergent cases in recent months have given the public some idea as to what exactly reporter privilege is and whether it may or may not be important in guaranteeing the free flow of information in society. Whether it’s important or not depends on point of view, and, sometimes, one’s political perspective. The case of San Francisco Giants baseball star Barry Bonds and the ongoing issues with steroid use fueled one case in which two San Francisco Chronicle reporters were held in contempt and sentenced to 18 months in jail for refusing to reveal the source of leaked grand jury testimony. According to the testimony, Bonds was among several star athletes who admitted using steroids in the past, although he claimed he did not know at the time the substance he was taking contained steroids. In the other, New York Times reporter Judith Miller served 85 days in jail over her refusal to disclose the source of information that identified a CIA employee, Valerie Plame. The case was complicated with political overtones dealing with the Bush Administration’s claims in early 2003 that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. A number of other reporter privilege cases were ongoing during the same time period as these two, but the newsworthiness and the subject matter elevated these two cases in terms of extensive news coverage.1 Particularly in the case of Miller, a high-profile reporter for what arguably is the most important news organization in the world, being jailed created a continuing story that was closely followed by journalists and the public. -

GamerGate Eine Retrospektive November 2020 @KeinenPixel_de [email protected] keinenpixel.de @KeinenPixel_de GAMERGATE, EINE RETROSPEKTIVE Abstract: GamerGate war eine 2014 beginnende anti-feministische und rechtsextreme Bewegung, die große Teile der Computer- und Videospielszene sowie angrenzende Bereiche der Popkultur erfasste und weitreichende politische Folgen nach sich zog. Anhand von Primär-, wie auch Sekundärquellen zeichnet diese Retrospektive die Entwicklung von GamerGate in drei Phasen nach: Wie sich 1.) aus persönlicher Rache und den unkoordinierten Angriffen auf Einzelpersonen eine 2.) breite, anti-feministische Bewegung herausbildete, die sich 3.) mit rechtsextremen Elementen zu einer politischen Bewegung vereint. Diese wurde maßgeblich von Steve Bannon initiiert, der damit den Wahlkampf von Donald Trump in den USA unterstützte. Wie der vierte und letzte Teil darstellt, nimmt GamerGate deshalb noch heute eine Schlüsselposition in der Entwicklung der neuen Rechten ein, die Popkultur mit rechtsextremer Politik verbindet. Bestehende Tendenzen und kleinere Strömungen haben sich in GamerGate vereinigt, weshalb die Bewegung einen neue Möglichkeit zur Rekrutierung und Radikalisierung am rechten Rand gebildet hat. Obwohl GamerGate bereits oft in Artikeln thematisiert wurde, gibt es nur wenige Gesamtüberblicke über die Entwicklung der Bewegung. Die Retrospektive will als ausführliche deutschsprachige Ressource zukünftige Arbeit mit dem Thema erleichtern. First, this work examines classic definitions of satire and contemporary definitions and usages of irony in an effort to understand how they function in the fake news genre. Using a theory of postmodern knowledge, this work aims to illustrate how satiric news functions epistemologically using both logical and narrative paradigms.
