He was a very important teacher to me as he introduced me to the science of sports, taught me how to emphasize it and understand the benefits of it. I could say that I had lifted myself to the next level thanks to the efforts of the Professor. He was an extraordinary example to me as a personality and as a sports researcher. I would additionally like to extend my thanks to Professor Antanas Skarbalius. You are a great supervisor and counselor, who would always direct me to the right way in case I had questions or doubts during my work. You have always cared and sought that the work would be performed as consistently as possible, that I would not lose my curiosity and strive for my goals, would be confident in myself and defend my opinion. You have been a great as a supervisor and as a human being. In addition I would like to express my thanks to each and every person I met and who did help me to reach the targeted goals. I would like to dedicate this dissertation to my mother Angel ÷, my father Vytautas and all my family. This dissertation stands as a culmination to your life-long dedication to my education. From you I learned that effort and persistence leads to success, and if you keep trying you will eventually reach your goal. In addition, I am greatly thankful for my lovely wife Jovita and son Kornelijus for their vast love and understanding that basketball is extremely important thing in my life. I hope you are proud of this dissertation. 6 INTRODUCTION Relevance of the topic. Lithuania is not a large country and sports talents are not emerging very often.
