AMERICAN SADDLEBRED HORSE ASSOCIATION OF VIRGINIA NEWSLETTER 1617 MAIDEN LANE, SW ROANOKE, VA 24015 WWW.ASHAV.NET

A Message from your President ...

The 2014 ASHAV Convention was held this year at the Virginia Horse Center on the con- course, March 8th, and it proved not to be a good venue for several reasons. But despite the challenges everyone had a good time, and seemed to really like having it condensed to (1) evening. The convention was held in conjunction with the UPHA Chapter 18 Spring Riding Clinic, March 7th & 8th. The Clinic was excellent for the participants to brush up on their riding skills, work on problem areas & learn a new way to do something under the expert guidance of top trainer, Melissa Moore, with private and group lessons, from beginners to the most advanced riders. Melissa is such a positive teacher, that everyone enjoyed his or her rides. During the lunch break Saturday; equine physician Dr. Bayard Rucker presented a power point & lecture presentation for all those interested in the “ins and outs” of equine den- tistry. The Annual Membership meeting, was held on the concourse prior to the awards din- ner with the of the officers: Carol Reedy, President, Gary Altizer, Vice-President, Jennifer Burks, Secretary, Jennifer Crozier, Treasure. Election of Zone Directors was as fol- lows: Zone 1-Larry Hartsock & Dana Ellington-Mullins, Zone 2-Heather Dudley & Lee Ad- ams-Hudson, Zone 3-Robin Williams & Katie Constable, Zone 4-Joy Bowman & Natalie Hamer and Zone 5 (West VA) Casey Surface & Andre Fourie. Old & New business was dis- cussed and members adjourned for the Banquet. With much anticipation the presentation of 2013 ASHAV High Point winners, High Point Horse of the Year (A Starless Nite), Junior Judging winners, Adult Sportsmanship recipient Casey Surface & Youth Sportsmanship re- cipient Caroline Stephenson, Trainer of the Year was Sherri Surface.

Junior & Senior Judging, Academy High Point Awards, as well as Virginia Winter Tourna- ment High Point winners.

I want to Thank all of who served on committees and all who volunteered to help in whatever capacity was needed this past year! We will continue to need your ideas, experience, exper- tise and your willingness to serve on committees as we go through this year. We need new and fun ideas for the 2014 Horse show, especially since this is our 30th Anniversary.

The Horse Show will be, Sept. 25-28th & our Judge will be Melissa Moore. The popular Dog Show Friday night after the last class during the exhibitors party and the highly competitive Stick Horse parade Saturday evening will again be offered this year as well as Ride for the Cure/Iron Will. We are again planning another Great show and hope you will join us! As the planning process for the 2014 show unfolds and an officer or zone representative calls for your support please support their efforts! Remember this is Our show and we want it to be the very best it can possibly be!

SHERRI SURFACE

Trainer of the Year

Three words describe Sherri Surface as a trainer and successful business woman: Organized, energized and focused. Sherri gives 100% to her customers and their horses and she expects the same in return, always striving for them to do their best and to set goals for themselves. She always has the horses’ welfare at top of her priority list, keeping them well groomed as well as her beautiful barn. Sherri, high strung like an American Saddle- bred, is an honest person. You never have to worry about her talking behind your back because if she has a concern, she will dis- cuss it with you face to face. However, so many people never see the softer side of Sherri Surface; a side that wants to give every child an opportunity to ride the American Saddlebred no matter of their socioeconomic background. She opens up her heart to so many adults and children with special needs; helping them to accom- plish their riding goals. When people with a limited budget, come to her and wants a horse to show either in academy or regular shows, she helps them find a way. Sometimes this means her making a show horse out of an ordinary one to fit that budget. Adding to her accomplishments, this past year her entire show string, with Sherri’s guid- ance, won a championship or placed in the top ten on a regional and/or national level. Her ac- complishments would not be possible or as meaningful without the support of her husband, Ben, and her son, Casey, who she is so proud of. Sherri Surface, with her fierce determination, has come a long way. Thank her for pro- moting the American Saddlebred and for helping to give everyone the opportunity to enjoy them!

ASHAV Adult Sportsmanship Award Casey Surface

The Sportsmanship Award is designed to recognize an individual who embodies the qualities of a sportsman at all times. To be considered for the Award, they should exhibit fairness, courtesy, consideration for their fellow horsemen and contributions to the breed. The recipient of this award is not necessarily a world rider or driver, but must possess a World Champion Attitude. This year’s recipient certainly embodies all of these qualities.

He is a dedicated, hardworking, thoughtful person that takes pride in anything he sets out to do. He likes country music, old western movies, cowboy boots, blue jeans, singing while he’s working and loves his dog Skittles.

From about the age 4 to11 horses were not his initial goal in life, he loved to draw & dreamt of being an architect. The closest he came to horses at that point was a stick horse and wanting to be the tractor boy at the Roanoke Valley Horse Show, that is still one of his goals!

He was almost 11 when he decided he wanted to show at the WV State Fair, which was only a couple weeks away, he practiced everyday for hours & he was 2nd out of 8 in his first academy class. Academy was okay, but told his Mom that he wanted his own horse & would pick it out himself and he did. Conestoga Night (Bernie), 13 & under show pleasure with many obstacles to overcome, but they did.

His next major challenge was “He’s Somethin Else” (Jimmy). They spent countless hours together doing eve- rything from grooming & riding to just plain playing around and eating strawberry Pop Tarts together. He taught him how to respect horses, patience, courage, and determination. Every time he came out of the show ring he would always find a “good” that they had accomplished, determined to be better in the next class. Jimmy will always be his “Champion”.

Along the way he has gotten encouragement and advice from trainers that have made an impact on his life….Peter & Kim Cowart, Matt Shiflet, Danny & Nancy Troutman, Gordon & Lori Ingram, John Bare, Matt Lightner, Andre Fourie, Steve Gassen and Roger Meade just to name a few. Roger gave him advice that he will always treasure: I love you like my own. Don’t ever change Be Honest Do everything you do the right way even if it takes longer Don’t try to get rich Be you and Success will follow you De sure to get a good girl in your life and be sure it’s the right one.

He is an honest, hard-working gentleman, who is dedicated to his customers and their horses, having an unsel- fish attitude that promotes good sportsmanship.

It is a great privilege to present this year’s ASHAV Adult Sportsmanship Award to Casey Surface.

ASHAV SERVICE AWARD Kim Houck

Our ASHAV Service Award is presented each year to a member who has worked in any variety of ways to improve our association

The dedication and willingness of the indi- vidual to work above and beyond the nor- mal call of activities makes her a worthy recipient of this year’s award.

She was born in Bluefield ,WV the young- est of three children.Growing up her dad had horses, and she rode once & awhile, but her father & bother were the cowboys of the family.

She is a graduate of VT with an Account- ing degree and met her husband of 26 years while they were in college. They have two wonderful young adults, who she is very proud of all their achievements. She loves her family, their dog Pepper, Chocolate covered raisins, pandora beads and having fun. Their daughter Jamie, started riding lessons and was showing in Academy classes by the age of 6. And this is how we have gotten to today!

In the years I have known Kim she has always been willing to do anything that is needed to be done. Four years ago when the asso- ciation was looking for a Treasurer she volunteered her services. Last year she redid the whole prizebook in word, making it easier to do necessary changes. After the Horse Show was over she stayed & helped with putting everything away without anyone asking. She has helped with the fund raising, weather it was being an active participant or cheering the rest of us on. and has been a dependable, conscientious, hard working member of ASHAV’s management team.!

We recognize her tonight as she steps down as ASHAV Treasurer, it has truly been a pleasure to have her of the board and work side by side with her, she will be missed, but I know that she will serve in other ways when needed or asked confident that if we need her she will always be willing to help. It is a great honor for me to present to Kim Houck this year’s Ser- vice Award.

ASHAV SERVICE AWARD Jessica Schaaff

The dictionary lists 28 different meanings for the word “service.” The ones best suited to describe the purpose of this award are: “to be helpful or beneficial; the act of giving assistance to another, and ready to serve.”

Our second Service Award is being presented to an individual who has been busy promoting saddleseat riding and the Ameri- can Saddlebred by looking outside the box, as well as her will- ingness to help whenever needed, usually volunteering without having to be asked.

She started taking riding lessons at Meadow Wood Stables doing Virginia winter tournaments and academy.

Thinking outside the box, she went to the City of Salem got rid- ing lesson into the Parks and Recreation

In the years I have known her she has always been willing to do anything that is needed to be done. She has volunteered to do the scheduling for the Virginia Winter Tournament. She has worked the gate at the ASHAV Horse Show. Sold raffle tickets for the “Ride For the Cure”, help “rent” ponies or pigs for UPHA & ASHAV fundraisers This past year she volunteered to take over the ASHAV Slide Show, since Anna Hudson was unable to do it with going off to college. As you know it provides an advertising opportunity for stables and individuals who would like to show off their favorite picture of their blue ribbon ride, honor a friend, trainer, advertise a stud or horses for sale. it runs continually dur- ing the horse show. She put many long hours in pulling it all together, and did a great job. We are again planning to do this at the 2014 Bonnie Blue & ASHAV Horse Shows. She has took on another challenge, the High Point Slide Show that you are enjoying tonight.

She works for the City of Salem.

For the hours of effort, the required dedication and determination, and her positive attitude, it gives me the greatest pleasure to present this year’s Service Award to Jessica Schaaff!

ASHAV 2013 Youth Sportsmanship Award Caroline Stephenson

One of the key words that define Sportsmanship is fair-mindedness. This year’s Youth Sportsman defiantly embodies this quality and more. She is a de- voted and diligent young competitor, who has a vey kind, caring and respectful na- ture. She is one of the sweetest and most unselfish young person you will ever meet. This young lady has been riding for 6 years, like most she started in the lesson program. After a couple seasons in the academy program, & dreaming of having her own horse, her parents pur- chased the mare “Irene York” for her. It was love at first sight. Irene is a spirited little mare that is challenging to ride and show and because of this her riding skills have become very good. But this is not to say she hasn’t had her ups & downs. It is easy to be a good sport when things are going well, but the true test is when things are not going all that well. Never complaining only de- termined to do better the next time and always leaves the show ring with a smile. She attends The Community School in Roanoke and has been a foreign exchange student for several years. Helping “rent” pigs & ponies for ASHAV & UPHA fund- raising, selling raffle tickets, and always will do whatever is a required or asked of her. She is a great role model for both young & adult riders alike, always exemplifying eagerness to lend a helping hand, cheer others on and she represents our industry with the utmost integrity. This year’s recipient has a very positive attitude about showing, always a good sport regardless of where she places in competition. Her smile says it all, it’s about having fun and the love of the horse. It is a great privilege to present ASHAV’s Youth Sportsmanship Award to Caroline Stephenson

All riders can have their rides sponsored to raise money for Saint Jude Chil- dren’s Hospital. The minimum donation for each ride can be as little as a $1. Simply fill out the form below and send it in. After each show send in your donation sheet and all money collected. Totals will be announced at the ASHAV Convention and an award for the top earner.

AMERICAN SADDLEBRED WORLD LOSES MARK OF DESIGN

On Saturday, Feb. 22, Mark Of Design died of complications of castration. He was owned, trained and shown by Lisa Worrell Whittle of Imagemaker Farm, Hillsville, Virgina, in the VA/NC show circuit. Mark had nota- ble wins in the Fine Harness, Park and Five-Gaited divisions at such shows as Roanoke, Asheville, Blowing Rock and Raleigh. He sired the 2013Junior and Open Fine Harness Champion at Roanoke, My Lovely Lady.

After castration, Mark was in the process of being sold to Kenny and Ceil Wheeler for their 16 year-old daugh- ter, Catherine, to show in the Juvenile Five-Gaited division. Smith Lilly of Mercer Springs Farm served as agent for the Wheelers. All involved were devastated by the loss.

Mark was the culmination of years of work, breeding study, acquired training skills and a successful show ca- reer. He lifted Lisa into the ranks of being able to successfully compete at anybody's horse show.

I can honestly say he was the most fun horse I have ever had. The thrill of the sale, and the potential world title, added to the achievements that I had only dreamed about, now just within reach. The death of my magnificent horse brought the dream to a shocking end. The fall from the heights of which I had spent years climbing was nothing less than shattering. It was a tragic loss of epic proportions from which I am still recovering. In my heart, I couldn't care less about the money; in reality, it was a hard blow to my horse enterprise.”

To my friends that shared my shock and pain, thank you; alone it was more than I could bear. To my vets, thank you for Mark's care and laying him to rest at my farm. We have become family. To my neighbors with a backhoe, thank you, for he couldn't be laid to rest without you. To my husband, Tom, and my son, Ben, thank you for your support and understanding. To others who have shared in our disbelief of such a tragedy, thank you for your sympathy; it really does lighten a heavy heart. To Catherine, I'm sorry I was unable to deliver to you a new horse. To me, the most closure came when I realized, I was the 16 year-old girl, living my dream and having the time of my life. I love you Mark and will miss you. And thank you God for sending him to me in the first place, the only first place that really matters.” Said Lisa.

If you have anything to share, Lisa Whittle has set up an email especially for Mark: lisasmarkof- [email protected]. Pictures of Mark can be seen on imagemakerfarm.com.

Easy Fund Raising Opportunity!

Wow!

This is a way each of us can help support ASHAV without spending any extra money and very, very little time! If you buy your horse feed at Southern States, all you have to do is save the proof of purchase labels from your feed bags or keep your receipts if you buy in bulk, turn those in to our organization and we will get money for them! Lori Gordon has graciously agreed to collect the proofs of purchases and receipts for ASHAV and to send them in to Southern States. This can be a very big job, and with your help, we hope to keep Lori so busy that she will need an assistant! So start sending in those proofs of purchase.

Thank you for helping ASHAV!

CLIP THE PROOF-OF-PURCHASE SEALS FOR ASHAV

Southern States’ Special Horse Organization Winners (SHOW) Program helps turn empty feed bags into cash for horse-related organizations. Nonprofit breed associations and horse clubs are eligible. Currently more than 300 groups are earning money through the SHOW Program.

Here’s how it works: Register your organization with Southern States in Richmond, VA, then get everyone to clip and save the proof-of-purchase seals found on the back of each bag of feed purchased at a Southern States store. For bulk feed purchases, submit the customer copy of the delivery ticket. For every bag of Legends or Triple Crown feed, your organization will receive 25 cents, and $10 per ton on delivered bulk feed. Reliance feeds are also included at a smaller rebate amount.

Mail your proof-of-purchase seals to: Lori Gordon, 2625 Dodson Rd., Blairs, VA 24527

UPHA Chapter 18 2013 Honor Show Roanoke Valley Horse Show

The UPHA Chapter Honor show award is presented to the show that meets the standards of the professional horsemen and the show horse industry. The attitude of show management and its willingness to work with exhibitors and the professionals for a better horse show, and it also must be well judged, are just a few of the criteria for this honor.

Only a few days before horses were scheduled to arrive, a storm came through the Roanoke Valley that flat- tened all but one of the temporary stalls. Within 48 hours everything was looking like nothing had ever hap- pened, thanks to volunteers working around the clock. Who would of thought that another severe storm would come through again one week later right as Wednesday night’s session was beginning, causing considerable amount of damage to Tent C. Luckily, no horses or people were injured. Trainers, exhibitors, and volunteers pitched in to clear everything out of the affected tent. The equine community really bands together in times of need. The horse show officials were also incredibly quick to act. They organized, reassured, and took immedi- ate action. By Thursday morning, everything was set back up, and once again it looked like nothing had ever happened.

It is evident that the love of horses, the care for one another, and the actions of a well-prepared management are all huge factors in what makes a show successful. The events of the week and the way they were handled exemplified the reason the Roanoke Valley Horse Show earned the UPHA Chapter 18 2013 Honor Show.
