  • Cruising Guide to the Philippines
Cruising Guide to the Philippines For Yachtsmen By Conant M. Webb Draft of 06/16/09 Webb - Cruising Guide to the Phillippines Page 2 INTRODUCTION The Philippines is the second largest archipelago in the world after Indonesia, with around 7,000 islands. Relatively few yachts cruise here, but there seem to be more every year. In most areas it is still rare to run across another yacht. There are pristine coral reefs, turquoise bays and snug anchorages, as well as more metropolitan delights. The Filipino people are very friendly and sometimes embarrassingly hospitable. Their culture is a unique mixture of indigenous, Spanish, Asian and American. Philippine charts are inexpensive and reasonably good. English is widely (although not universally) spoken. The cost of living is very reasonable. This book is intended to meet the particular needs of the cruising yachtsman with a boat in the 10-20 meter range. It supplements (but is not intended to replace) conventional navigational materials, a discussion of which can be found below on page 16. I have tried to make this book accurate, but responsibility for the safety of your vessel and its crew must remain yours alone. CONVENTIONS IN THIS BOOK Coordinates are given for various features to help you find them on a chart, not for uncritical use with GPS. In most cases the position is approximate, and is only given to the nearest whole minute. Where coordinates are expressed more exactly, in decimal minutes or minutes and seconds, the relevant chart is mentioned or WGS 84 is the datum used. See the References section (page 157) for specific details of the chart edition used.

This represents the largest gap since I first visited in 1999. The reasons for this are varied, however mostly it was a combination of self-employment and disenchantment brought on by a number of people both in Manila and Sydney. It is remarkable how damaging negative and hateful people can be.

  • Gender-Responsive Toolkit on Ecotourism Planning and Management
Gender-responsive Toolkit on Ecotourism Planning And Management GREAT Women Project Management Office Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) December 2013 Quezon City, Philippines Message Tourism is one of the major sectors that drive our economy. In the tourism industry, it is mainly the women who are in the forefront of tourism – related activities. Undoubtedly, the heavy influx of tourists also brings about environmental degradation; hence the term ecotourism was coined to ensure that tourism activities will not have adverse effects on the natural environment. Although ecotourism is becoming widely – known, women’s roles and participation in various ecotourism activities are still understated and not considered in ecotourism planning and management. The Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) through the Gender Responsive Economic Actions for the Transformation of Women (GREAT) Project, partnered with the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the development of this Tool Kit which aims to provide information to LGUs and protected area managers in preparing and developing their ecotourism management plans and ensuring that ecotourism strategies are gender responsive. The PCW commends the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau for developing this tool kit and I would like to thank the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) of Canada for their untiring support to the GREAT Women Project. As we work together as partners in the dissemination and utilization of this Tool Kit, we look forward to seeing more women participating and benefiting from ecotourism activities REMEDIOS I.

Transportation history of the Philippines This article describes the various forms of transportation in the Philippines. Despite the physical barriers that can hamper overall transport development in the country, the Philippines has found ways to create and integrate an extensive transportation system that connects the over 7,000 islands that surround the archipelago, and it has shown that through the Filipinos' ingenuity and creativity, they have created several transport forms that are unique to the country. • Laguna Lake, the Philippines: Industrial Contamination Hotspots
Laguna Lake, The Philippines: industrial contamination hotspots Iryna Labunska, Kevin Brigden, Paul Johnston Greenpeace Research Laboratories Technical Note 06/2011 June 2011 1. Introduction Contamination of natural water resources by discharges from the industrial sector in the Philippines continues to be a significant problem. In 2007, Greenpeace launched the Water Patrol to document the impact of water pollution on local communities in the Philippines. Within the framework of this project, several industrial sites located around Laguna Lake were visited in July 2010. During these visits, samples of wastewater discharges into creeks and tributaries of Laguna Lake and corresponding sediment or soil samples were collected. The sites which were chosen for investigation in this study were those accommodating potentially polluting facilities in the area. The selection of the facilities was based on the following criteria: facility operations were thought to involve the use of toxic chemicals; the facility discharged wastewater directly into Laguna Lake or one of its tributaries; in some cases, the facility had been previously identified by government agencies as a polluting industry and listed in the black or red lists by the Laguna Lake Development Authority or the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Four facilities located to the south-east of Laguna Lake were targeted in the current study: Mayer Textile; Philippine Industrial Sealants and Coatings Corporation (PIS); TNC Chemicals; Carmelray 1 Industrial Park. Wastewater is discharged from these facilities into the San Juan River and the San Cristobal River. Two other target facilities were located to the north of Laguna Lake - Hansson Papers and Litton Mills.
