  • Marketing of Professional Women's Soccer in the United States
MARKETING OF PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S SOCCER IN THE UNITED STATES THROUGH FEMINIST THEORIES by CHRISTOPHER HENDERSON (Under the Direction of James J. Zhang) ABSTRACT Despite the success of the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT), two women’s soccer leagues have quickly failed in the U.S. This doctoral dissertation examines the past and present of the marketing of professional women’s soccer in the United States emphasizing feminist themes to fulfill three objectives: (a) to critically examine the history of the marketing of women’s soccer in the United States to identify and gain a better comprehension of changes in theory and practice of marketing in women’s soccer in the U.S. over time; (b) to identify and explain the use of three feminist themes in the marketing of women’s soccer, specifically in the NWSL; and (c) to analyze the impact of these three feminist themes on the related marketing strategies used within in the NWSL in an effort to build a framework while also developing recommendations for marketing practitioners for the promotion and marketing of professional women’s soccer in the United States. The historical analysis segment revealed that the failure of the first two professional women’s soccer leagues in the United States were largely a result of poor resource allocation and an inability to connect with and retain fans, the media, and sponsors. The Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) burned through capital at an unsustainable rate and was unable to maintain the excitement of the 1999 Women’s World Cup, leading to microscopic television ratings and perennially falling attendance.

Alice in Zombieland Gena Showalter Harlequin Enterprises Limited, 2012 404 pages SUMMARY: After a car crash kills her parents and younger sister, sixteen year old Alice Bell learns that her dad was right. The monsters are real. Now, Ali must learn to fight the monsters in order to stay alive. IF YOU LIKED THIS BOOK TRY… Wake, Lisa McMann Through the Zombie Glass, Gena Showalter Infinity, Sherrilyn Kenyon School Spirits, Rachel Hawkins WEBSITES: White Rabbit Chronicles, http://www.wrchronicles.com Official website of Gena Showalter, http://genashowalter.com BOOKTALK: Disclaimer: If (because of the book’s title) you are expecting a re-telling of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, you will be disappointed. However, don’t let that stop you from picking up this book. It’s a great read with a different twist on the whole Zombie concept. Yes, there are zombies in the book, but they’re not your typical zombies. Instead of being undead humans that crave human flesh, Showalter’s zombies are really infected spirits that eat the spirits of humans which then causes the humans to become infected. Not everyone can see the zombies. Sixteen year old Alice Bell doesn’t see them until after a car crash that kills her parents and younger sister. Alice moves in with her grandparents and attend a different high school. At her new school, Ali hooks up with a group of kids who turn out to be zombie slayers. Cole, the leader of the group, just happens to be the most gorgeous “bad boy” that Ali has ever seen.

  • Bowls Include Nice Weather Games in Miami, Boca Raton, and the Bahamas
By the Numbers Bowl Edition Welcome to the bowl edition of By the Numbers. Here you will find some commentary on each of the (38!) bowl games as well as the computer’s picks. With more than a month off for some teams, a bowl game can be more like a first game of the year than the logical conclusion of the season, so the computer picks are not reliable. New bowls include nice weather games in Miami, Boca Raton, and the Bahamas ... plus the Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit. I thought that perhaps the Detroit folks got confused about what type of bowling was being rolled out, but it turns out that Quick Lane is a tire and auto repair place. Most of the commentary about the selection process has been positive. There has been some croaking about TCU dropping from #3 to #6 while winning 55-3, but a surprising number of commentators have clued into the concept of re-evaluating every week. It turns out that strength of schedule changes weekly; who knew? It, undoubtedly, helps everybody’s humor that the final four consists of champions from four different conferences. According to my ratings, the committee mostly got it right (other than TCU). You have to include Florida State because they are unbeaten; actually, in the version of the ratings that only uses schedule and wins/losses, FSU is #1. It's also nice that the committee placed good teams in the New Year's Day Six bowls. Some quick bowl facts: the SEC set a record with 12 bowl teams (if Kentucky had held onto a late lead against Louisville, the SEC would have had 13 out of 14!).

  • Zombieland 106 Spring 2016
2016 Exemplary Award Winner (ENWR106) Nicole Marquez Zombieland: A Post-Apocalyptic Nightmare or Adulthood Reality? In the film Zombieland (2009), directed by Ruben Fleischer, a young, anxious man known to the audience as Columbus – because of his hometown/ destination of Columbus, Ohio – encounters a man named Tallahassee and two sisters, Wichita and Little Rock. The group has their ups and downs and eVentually becomes what Columbus identifies as his “family”. While the film appears to be a mere zombie flick about good guys kicking zombie ass while trying to find somewhere to go in a post-apocalyptic world, Zombieland actually offers a notable look into the way that society is on a quest for a sense of simplistic innocence that perhaps is only possible to experience as children – deeming our quest pointless since aging and mortality are ineVitable. The zombie, having no regards for human life and being “hateful and Violent”, as described by Columbus, is itself a representation of what we can become as adults. We are left on our own to fend off the terrors of the real world with no direction, in recoVery of complicated parental relationships and a lost childhood. As children we create monsters out of the unknown (which is plenty when we are so young and full of blissful ignorance). As adults, we fear the monsters we know to be real. We fear the things that we’Ve already witnessed to be possibilities. Yes, we fear death and things still unknown to us as adults; howeVer, more damaging, we fear losing loVed ones, relationships or the lack of, not being loVed in return, being alone, and finding ourselVes in “Zombieland.” The film, Zombieland, reveals the way that growth into adulthood can desensitize us or inflict so much fear to the point of mental instability.
