By the Numbers Bowl Edition

Welcome to the bowl edition of By the Numbers. Here you will find some commentary on each of the (38!) bowl games as well as the computer’s picks. With more than a month off for some teams, a can be more like a first game of the year than the logical conclusion of the season, so the computer picks are not reliable. New bowls include nice weather games in Miami, Boca Raton, and the Bahamas ... plus the in . I thought that perhaps the Detroit folks got confused about what type of bowling was being rolled out, but it turns out that Quick Lane is a tire and auto repair place.

Most of the commentary about the selection process has been positive. There has been some croaking about TCU dropping from #3 to #6 while winning 55-3, but a surprising number of commentators have clued into the concept of re-evaluating every week. It turns out that strength of schedule changes weekly; who knew? It, undoubtedly, helps everybody’s humor that the final four consists of champions from four different conferences. According to my ratings, the committee mostly got it right (other than TCU). You have to include Florida State because they are unbeaten; actually, in the version of the ratings that only uses schedule and wins/losses, FSU is #1. It's also nice that the committee placed good teams in the New Year's Day Six bowls.

Some quick bowl facts: the SEC set a record with 12 bowl teams (if Kentucky had held onto a late lead against Louisville, the SEC would have had 13 out of 14!). The ACC tied them with 12, if you count Notre Dame. Speaking of which, how about the Irish and LSU in Nashville? And Southern Cal and Nebraska in San Diego? The background honors the Arkansas- matchup in the . Back in 1969, the Hogs and Horns weren't the 6-6 teams they are now, but were unbeaten and untied (as we used to say) and ranked 1-2. They played one of the first games rescheduled for TV, a Game of the Century (a TV ratings of 52.1!) attended with great fanfare by President Nixon. The Texas QB broke loose for a 42-yard TD run in the fourth quarter with Arkansas ahead 14-0. In one of the great coaching calls ever, Texas immediately went for 2. They got it, scored another TD and kicked the extra point for a 15-14 win. Name the Longhorn QB. (Hint: his son is now one of the best relief pitchers in baseball.) The game and surrounding political and social unrest are described well in a book with the wonderful CSN-inspired title Horns, Hogs, and Nixon Coming.

The Florida-Idaho season opener was cancelled due to a storm after only one play, a long kickoff return by (honest!) Valdez Showers of the Gators. Just think, with the Gators finishing at 6-5, one more loss and the absence of that win could have kept Florida out of the bowls and might have cost Coach Muschamp his ... oh, right. There are always important coaching changes before the bowls. I'm mourning Clemson OC Chad Morris's move to SMU. Colorado State coach Jim McElwain took the Florida job and talked about it being one of the "great brands" in sports. Not to mention the fine scholar-athletes that play the games, right, coach? Actually, he did say that he could win with his dog Claribelle at . Which ought to make feel loved.

For each game, I list the computer’s pick (no home field), TV information, and some unscientific and possibly useless comments. The final regular season ratings follow the picks. Enjoy the games!

12/20 Nevada 32, Louisiana-Lafayette 27 11:00 ESPN New Orleans The Cajuns have won the last three N.O. Bowls. Nevada finished with a win in Vegas, so maybe the Big Easy is no big deal. Nevada (7-5): threw for 2374 yards, ran for 997, and accounted for 31 TDs. La-La (8-4): Won 7 of their last 8 games. QB Terrance Broadway is the headliner. Elijah McGuire foretells success with his rushing performance.

12/20 Utah State 27, UTEP 17 2:20 ESPN Albuquerque Looks like a mismatch of men versus boys, as Utah State tries to shut down the Miners. Utah St. (9-4): The Aggies are an oddity, a defensive team in the Mountain West. Brothers Zach and Nick Vigil kept watch on the opposition with a combined 261 tackles! UTEP (7-5): The Miners were led by Aaron Jones’s 1233 rushing yards in a big turnaround year.

12/20 Utah 31, Colorado State 25 3:30 ABC Las Vegas Utah’s Coach Whittingham is 7-1 in bowls, the Rams’s coach is 0-0 at Colorado State. Nice bounce back seasons for both; CSU had been 3-9 three years in a row. Utah (8-4): The Utes fell off after early wins over USC and UCLA. Devontae Booker ran for 1350, Kaelin Clay returned 4 kicks for TDs, and Nate Orchard won the Hendricks Award for best DE. Colorado State (10-2): QB Garrett Grayson threw for 3779 yards and 32 TDs, with catching 89 passes for 1640 yards.

12/20 Idaho Potato Bowl Air Force 30, Western Michigan 24 5:30 ESPN Boise Even bigger turnarounds for these two teams, as Air Force went 2-10 and WM 1-11 last year. Air Force (9-3): Won 5 of last 6, including Colorado State. Kale Pearson ran for 1513 yards and threw for 646. Handed Boise State its only conference loss. W. Michigan (8-4): A more balanced attack, with Zach Terrell throwing for 3146 yards and Jarvion Franklin running for 1525.

12/20 Camellia Bowl South Alabama 28, Bowling Green 27 9:00 ESPN Montgomery One streak will be broken, as neither team enters the game with a win over a bowl team. This is the first bowl ever for South Alabama, and a large crowd will be chanting “USA! USA!” B. Green (7-6): Speaking of streaks: BG lost its last 3 games of the season, and has lost 4 bowl games in a row. QB James Knapke will try to clean up this mess. S. Alabama (6-6): The Jaguars feature QB , who is described in very similar terms to Logan Thomas. The defense only gives up 25.8 points per game, but the offense only scores 22.1.

12/22 Miami Beach Memphis 31, BYU 28 2:00 ESPN Miami A brand new bowl with an intriguing matchup of a team, Memphis, on the rise and a BYU team that had a roller coaster year. Memphis (9-3): QB threw for 2725 yards, but had 0 INTs in last 6 games – all of which, not coincidentally, the Tigers won. BYU (8-4): Looked like major bowl contenders early in the year with QB Taysom Hill. After his injury, had trouble converting to Christian Stewart. Won 4, lost 4, won last 4.

12/23 Marshall 42, Northern Illinois 35 6:00 ESPN Boca Raton A 12-win team and an 11-win team, and lots of points – welcome to Boca! Marshall (12-1): Only loss was 67-66. QB threw for 3622 yards and 37 TDs, and has TD passes in 45 straight games. The Herd averages 45.1 points per game. NIU (11-2): WR Da’Ron Brown may not have been named for the Crystals’ song, but can surely rap better than “Yeah, my heart stood still; yes, his name was Bill.”

12/23 Poinsettia Bowl Navy 27, San Diego State 24 9:30 ESPN San Diego Two home teams, as Navy is based here, and two good running teams. Navy (7-5): The nation’s #2 running attack with 345 yards per game. QB Keenan Reynolds led the way with 1182 and 21 TDs, including a record 251 against San Jose State. S. Diego St (7-5): Donnel Pumphrey ran for 1761 yards and 19 TDs.

12/24 Western Kentucky 40, Central Michigan 35 12:00 ESPN Nassau A nice location for two non-resort schools. Sponsored by Popeyes, and may feature eye-popping numbers, but subtitle is “We Beat the Boca Raton Bowl.” WKU (7-5): Only team to beat Marshall. Averaged 44 points per game (#6), gave up 39 (#122). Brandon Daughty threw for 4344 yards and 44 TDs! CMU (7-5): Beat Northern Illinois. QB Cooper Rush threw for 2664 yards and Michigan transfer Thomas Rawls rumbled for 1103 yards on the ground.

12/24 Rice 31, Fresno State 30 8:00 ESPN Honolulu The game is in Hawaii! What else can I say that’s nice about this one? Both teams bounced back from 0-3 starts to reach a bowl for the third straight year. And the game is in Hawaii. Rice (7-5): WR Jordan Taylor is big time, as is DE Brian Nordstrom, who racked up 18.5 tackles for a loss. A win would give the Owls 25 wins in the last 3 years, which would set a new record for the program. Fresno (6-7): Lost badly in Hawaii to SMU in 2012, so maybe they can prepare better this time. WR Josh Harper caught 86 balls for 1072 yards.

12/26 Dallas Bowl Louisiana Tech 31, Illinois 29 1:00 ESPN Dallas An Illinois defense that struggles against a Louisiana Tech team that laid 76 on Rice. Hard to pick Conference-USA over the Big 10, though. LaTech (8-5): Held Marshall to 26 in the USA championship game, but lost a heartbreaker. Kenneth Dixon ran for 1236 yards and 21 TDs. Illinois (6-6): Two big wins at the end of the year got them here, with Tim Beckman still coaching. Reilly O'Toole to Mike Dudek is the main tool in the Illini attack.

12/26 Quick Lane Bowl North Carolina 36, Rutgers 35 4:30 ESPN Detroit If both teams decide they really want to be in the Quick Lane Bowl, this could be fun. UNC (6-6): QB Marquise Williams threw for 1870 yards and ran for 737. Ryan Switzer is a threat at WR and punt returner. Bad letdown after big win over Duke (can't believe I just wrote that). Rutgers (7-5): WR Leonte Carroo against a bad UNC pass defense; if Gary Nova can get the ball there, the long ball should be open.

12/26 St. Petersburg NC State 30, Central Florida 27 8:00 ESPN St. Petersburg The UCF defense brings the lumber and the Plummer (LB Terrance). The Wolfpack put up big numbers on that other school from Florida, FSU. NCSt (7-5): QB threw 22 TD passes against only 5 picks. UCF (9-3): Won 9 of last 10. QB Justin Holman beat East Carolina with a Hail Mary on the last play of the game. DB Jacoby Glenn was USA defensive player of the year. Jacoby versus Jacoby?

12/27 Cincinnati 26, Virginia Tech 24 1:00 ESPN Annapolis Maybe seeing another team from Ohio will revive the Hokies. Otherwise, facing a Cincinnati team on a 9-game win streak looks difficult. Cincy (9-3): QB Gunner Kiel (Could you have a better name for a passer?) threw for 3010 yards and 30 picks, but not against the quality of the Tech defense. VT (6-6): Kendall Fuller and the Hokie D need to step up; an injury to Brandon Facyson doesn't help. Neither does the offense, which only gave offence to the VT fans.

12/27 Arizona State 38, Duke 28 2:00 CBS El Paso The battle of the Devils; both had late losses keep them out of conference championship games. Duke is looking for its first bowl win in 53 years after narrow losses the last two years. ASU (9-3): WR Jaelen Strong is a stud. QB Taylor Kelly can be very good when healthy. The Sun Devils were top ten much of the year; the Sun Bowl is not a happy result for them. Duke (9-3): A young and talented secondary anchors a team that stopped playing sound football at the end of the year. QB Anthony Boone and WR Jamison Crowder need to play big.

12/27 Miami 31, South Carolina 30 3:30 ABC Shreveport Both teams were highly ranked at the beginning of the year, and did not expect to end up in Shreveport at 6-6. The Old Ball Coach versus The U. MF (6-6): Duke Johnson is a force, running for 1520 yards. Freshman QB Brad Kaaya needs to earn all a's on the field. LB Denzel Perryman is outstanding. SC (6-6): The defense fell apart, giving up 31.2 points per game. WR Pharoh Cooper is good, but needs to buy one of Kaaya's vowels. RB Mike Davis ran for 927 yards.

12/27 20, Penn State 15 4:30 ESPN Bronx A low-scoring defensive struggle that could go to PKs. It's good to see the Lions back in a bowl. BC (7-5): Were 3-5 against bowl teams. QB can run (1079 yards) and pass, but this is a typical hardnosed and defensive-minded BC team. Unlucky to win only 7 games. PSt (6-6): Lost 6 of their last 8. QB Christian Hackenberg threw for 2606 yards but a mere 8 TDs. LB Mike Hull forms the base of the Penn State defense, winning Big 10 honors.

12/27 Southern Cal 33, Nebraska 31 8:00 ESPN San Diego Two classic programs after good but not great seasons, enough to encourage SC fans and get Nebraska coach Bo Pelini fired. USC (8-4): Cody Kessler is the next great SC QB with 3505 yards and 36 TDs. Neb. (9-3): Ameer Abdullah is one of the best, with 1523 yards and 18 TDs. De'Mornay Pierson-El makes punting to Nebraska a risky business, averaging 17.8 per return with 3 TDs.

12/29 Texas A&M 33, West Virginia 31 2:00 ESPN Memphis Good game, even if it's not entirely clear why they're in the conferences they're in. First meeting ever. Sumlin and Halgorson were assistants together at . A&M (7-5): Up and down season, but the QB gig now belongs to freshman . WVU (7-5): WR Kevin White is one of the best, with 102 catches for 1318 yards. A -15 in turnovers ruined a good season; lost 3 of the last 4.

12/29 Russell Athletics Oklahoma 28, Clemson 26 5:30 ESPN Orlando Two uptempo offenses that sometimes sputtered. Don't know if it's an omen that OU's Sterling Shepard won the Disney Spirit Award this year. OU (8-4): Injuries and inconsistent play took OU out of the Big 12 title hunt, but Samaje Perine (427 yards rushing versus Iowa State) and Trevor Knight are good when healthy. Clem (9-3): The defense has been great all year, led by and Grady Jarrett. DC Brent Venables used to be at OU. The offense will miss Chad Morris and Deshaun Watson.

12/29 Texas Bowl Arkansas 24, Texas 17 9:00 ESPN Houston Rebuilding years for coaches Strong and Bielema. In the 1960s these teams were the class of the Southwest Conference and the nation. Hogs (6-6): Won 2 of last 4, all against top 20 teams. Tough defense, two 1000-yard rushers and the Allen brothers at QB bring the bacon. Horns (6-6): Only allowed 23.3 points per game, but only scored 22.6. DT Malcolm Brown is a load and CB Quandre Diggs puts offenses in difficult positions.

12/30 LSU 31, Notre Dame 21 3:00 ESPN Nashville Football royalty comes to the Music City. Two teams who struggled with QB play. LSU (8-4): Lost 2 of their last 3, just when it seemed they had come of age. Freshman RB is a beast. QB is on the hot seat for the Tigers. ND (7-5): Did not recover from the interference call against Florida State. Everett Golson became a turnover machine and will split time at QB with freshman .

12/30 Belk Bowl Georgia 38, Louisville 28 6:30 ESPN Charlotte A strong SEC-ACC matchup, Georgia's third of the year. The "Todd Grantham Bowl" has the Louisville defensive coordinator against his old team. Dawgs (9-3): The season ended poorly, being shut out of the SEC championship and losing Todd Gurley to injury. RB Nick Chubb (1281 yards) is almost impossible to tackle. Cards (9-3): DB won the Thorpe Award and tied a record with 14 INTs. The offense is a Bobby Petrino cast of thousands with multiple QBs and RBs.

12/30 Foster Farms Bowl Stanford 24, Maryland 20 10:00 ESPN Santa Clara About where Maryland was expected to end up. The Cardinal expected to be much farther away from home in a much bigger game. Stan (7-5): QB Kevin Hogan struggled at times, but was a hero against Cal. Stanford did not produce the usual 1000-yard rusher to keep the pressure off Hogan. Terps (7-5): Kicker Brad Craddock won the Groza Award. A healthy Stefon Diggs is great.

12/31 TCU 30, Ole Miss 27 12:30 ESPN Atlanta Nice to see the Peach name again. A step up in class for this bowl, with a great offense versus defense matchup. Two teams that are proponents of the 8-team playoff system for some reason. TCU (11-1): If only the Frogs had held that 18-point lead against Baylor. A great year for QB Trevone Boykin (3714 yards passing and 642 rushing) and his 2nd-ranked offense (47 ppg). Miss (9-3): DB Senquez Golson and the Nkemdiche brothers lead the #1 defense at 13.8 points per game, while Bo Wallace does enough on offense.

12/31 Arizona 38, Boise State 34 4:00 ESPN Glendale Is Boise still a Cinderella? This is the third Fiesta appearance for both teams. Broncos are 2-0. Zona (10-3): LB won two major defensive awards and helps these pesky kids thwart opponents. New QB Anu Solomon is wise beyond his years, and RB Nick Wilson is strong. Boise (11-2): Boise is back to its high-scoring ways, with QB Grant Hedrick throwing for 3387 yards and 22 TDs. RB ran for 1689 yards and 25 TDs. You can't catch the J-train.

12/31 Mississippi State 35, Georgia Tech 29 8:00 ESPN Miami Not the flashy matchup the Orange Bowl would have picked, but a very interesting game as the Orange Bowl moves to New Year's Eve. MSU (10-2): Looked like a playoff team much of the year, but the loss to Ole Miss was a killer. QB Dak Prescott and RB Josh "Bowling Ball" Robinson lead a powerful offense. GT (10-3): Just outscored an SEC Bulldogs team led by a bowling ball. QB Justin Thomas (965 yards rushing, 1594 passing) is outstanding. 334 rushing yards per game is #3 in the country.

1/1 Auburn 35, Wisconsin 31 12:00 ESPN2 Tampa A matchup of two great running backs. Auburn hired to try to tighten up the defense, while Wisconsin is trying to ignore their lack of coach and that whole Ohio State thing. Aub. (8-4): Cameron Artis-Payne went for 1482 yards and ran and threw for the rest. No defense and a lack of pixie dust down the stretch made the difference this year. Wisc. (10-3): ran for 2336 yards and 26 TDs. The defense was mostly good, but the success of Oregon and Ohio State does not bode well for this game.

1/1 Baylor 40, Michigan State 38 12:30 ESPN North Texas This could be fun! The Cotton Bowl rejoins the bowl elite, and gets a high-scoring matchup. Bears (11-1): The #1 offense at 48.8 points per game. Bryce Petty threw for 3305 yards and 26 TDs. The offensive coordinator is the new Tulsa coach; is that a problem? Sparty (10-2): WR Tony Lippett is outstanding, gaining 1124 of Connor Cook's 2900 yards passing. #12 in the nation in scoring offense (43.1) and defense (19.9).

1/1 Missouri 28, Minnesota 20 1:00 ABC Orlando The old name is back, with an old-fashioned contest of defense and running. Mizz (10-3): The defense is led by linemen and Markus Golden. QB Maty Mauk was inconsistent, but when the Tigers ran well Mauk was good. Minn (8-4): The Gophers are led by David Cobb, who ran for 1548 yards with 13 TDs. QB Mitch Leidner is growing into the job.

1/1 Oregon 38, Florida State 35 5:00 ESPN Pasadena National semifinal number one! All Florida State has done is win, but they probably cannot afford to spot Oregon 21 points like they did NC State and Louisville. Is this finally the Year of the Duck? Ducks (12-1): won every award in sight, and deservedly so after throwing for 3783 yards and 38 TDs plus running for 669 yards and 14 TDs. Two offensive linemen were All- Pac 12. Noles (13-0): has only missed 3 kicks in 2 years, Nick O'Leary won the John Mackey Award, Rashad Greene caught passes for 1306 yards and Dalvin Cook is a star at RB. And Jameis is good in the clutch.

1/1 Alabama 36, Ohio State 31 8:30 ESPN New Orleans National semifinal number two! royalty led by great bowl coaches Saban and Meyer make this a fun matchup. I hope it will also be a great game. Bama (12-1): caught 115 balls for 1656 yards and 14 TDs and wasn't always healthy. Add T.J. Yeldon and a developing defense and the Tide can look unbeatable. Even the , J.K. Scott, is outstanding. OSU (12-1): The Buckeyes have lost two All-Big 10 QBs this year, and still hung 59 points on Wisconsin. OC Tom Herman will direct the Buckeyes while starting HC duties at Houston.

1/2 Armed Forces Pittsburgh 31, Houston 24 12:00 ESPN Fort Worth Two teams in transition, with coaching changes in progress. Pitt (6-6): Led by ACC Player of the Year James Conner, who ran for 1675 yards and 24 TDs. WR Tyler Boyd attracts a lot of attention from NFL scouts, when Chad Voytik can get the ball to him. UH (7-5): A top 20 defense that got some offensive support when was moved from WR to QB. LB Efrem Oliphant ensures defensive strength.

1/2 Tennessee 27, Iowa 21 3:20 ESPN Jacksonville Actually, the TaxSlayer Bowl seems to have dropped gator from the title. They also dropped the top ACC and Big 10 teams they used to get. What happened? Tenn (6-6): Won 3 of last 4 to become eligible. Sacks and on defense create enough offensive chances to win some games. Iowa (7-5): Way below expectations, other than Outland Award winner . RB Mark Weisman is tough if healthy. Iowa didn't beat a team with a winning record (note: UT was 6-6).

1/2 UCLA 31, Kansas State 30 6:45 ESPN San Antonio A good, even matchup in San Antonio. UCLA (9-3): LB Eric Kendricks won the Butkus Award. QB Brett Hundley had a good season, unless you believed the early Heisman hype. KSt (9-3): Jake Waters threw for 3163 yards, mostly to . Otherwise, it's the usual well coached but nameless Bill Snyder team.

1/2 Cactus Bowl Washington 28, Oklahoma State 24 10:15 ESPN Tempe Not the best game to be played in the Phoenix area, but if you need some Friday night football ... Wash (8-5): 3 All-Americans on defense, led by DL Hau'oli Kikaha's 18 sacks (!) and Shaq Thompson’s 6 TDs (3 , 1 int, and 2 rushing). Was 1-5 against bowl teams, with the only win against Illinois. OkSt (6-6): Lost 5 in a row before suddenly coming back and beating Oklahoma. Topplayer Tyreek Hill is out of the game, which takes away the good thing I could say about the Pokes.

1/3 Florida 38, East Carolina 24 1:00 ESPN2 Birmingham This could be a good game. How will Florida respond to a new coach? Can the record setting ECU pair of Shane Carden and Justin Hardy end their careers in style against a tough Gator D? Fla (6-5): The Gators were second defensively, led by Dante Fowler's 5.5 sacks. Freshman QB Treon Harris will play the role of dog Claribelle. ECU (8-4): Carden threw for 4309 yards and 28 TDs, all-time receiving leader Hardy went for 1334 yards. Lost 3 of last 5 after a great start.

1/4 GoDaddy Bowl Toledo 38, Arkansas State 32 9:00 ESPN Mobile And, finally, game 38! This is the fourth straight GoDaddy Bowl for Arkansas State. They're 2-1, including a win last year. Tol. (8-4): In just 9 games, Kareem Hunt ran for 1360 yards and 11 TDs. No good wins, although they played Northern Illinois very tough. ASt (7-5): Beat Utah State. QB Fredi Knighten provides most of the offense, with 2874 yards passing, 775 running, and 30 TDs total.

1/12 Championship Alabama 35, Oregon 32 8:30 ESPN Jerry World My hope is that with only 11 days off both teams will be ready to play.
