  • Does Love Really Conquer All?
    | 1 Friday, January 29, 2016 Does Love Really Conquer All? What really happened to Cinderella after she married Prince Charming? Did she live happily ever after? By Kathleen Burns Kingsbury What really happened to Cinderella after she married Prince Charming? Did she live happily ever after? Or did she, like most partners, disagree from time to time with her husband about how to spend, save, and invest the kingdom’s money? Like most couples starting out, the Charmings were probably too busy falling in love to talk about their attitudes and beliefs about money. Then, as the years went by, they realized that living happily ever after involves more than love. It requires a willingness to engage in financial conversations and plan together for the future. In our society, there are many myths about love and money that are perpetuated by fairy tales and movies. Three such myths are: love conquers all, love means never having to say you are sorry and, if you truly love your partner, you should always agree financially. Let’s take a brief look at these myths and how these beliefs, when left unchallenged, can contribute to couples not being as financially healthy as they could be. Love Conquers All The Latin phrase “omnia vincit amor” (translated to “love conquers all”) dates back to the Roman poet Virgil and his work, Eclogue X, written around 44 BC. This saying has gone on to be used as the name of a painting in the 1600s and the title of a song written in the 1990s by the band Deep Purple.

  • A Critical Analysis of the Portrayals of Prince Charming and Masculinity In
Prince 1 Is Prince Charming Still a Prince?: A Critical Analysis of the Portrayals of Prince Charming and Masculinity in Current Television Programming Fairy tales are popping up everywhere in popular culture. From movies like Mirror, Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman to television shows such as Once Upon a Time and Grimm, it is hard to escape the stories and the images. Contemporary retellings of classic fairytales are particularly interesting to explore as a lens to popular culture as they can show the audience current cultural stories in comparison to classic ones. Particularly interesting are the current interpretations of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on television. Corcorran (1984) explains, Through television, a particular social point of view is universalized and legitimized by its reification of ‘standards for deciding what is, standards for deciding what can be, standards for deciding how one feels about it, standards for deciding what to do about it and standards for deciding how to go about doing it’ (Goodenough, 1971, p. 22)” (p. 135). Television provides a medium in which the viewer can reflect on social norms and expectations. With the increase in the number of television shows using fairytales as their underlying story, we must dissect the narratives to understand how they are representing various aspects of our current culture. In this presentation, I explore the construction of masculinity through the character of Prince Charming in the original Grimm’s fairytale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, ABC’s sitcom, The Charmings which aired from 1987 to 1988, and ABC’s television drama series, Once Upon a Time which began airing in 2011.

Gold into Straw: Fairy Tale Movies for Children and the Culture Industry Donald P. Haase Following the jubilee of Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1987, it seems not only proper but useful to begin a consideration of fairy tale cinema for children by recalling some of the controversy sur- rounding Disney's influential fairy tale adaptations. In 1964 Frances Clarke Sayers articulated one of the most famous and most trenchant criticisms of Disney's adaptations of traditional fairy tales. Her primary complaint was that Disney destroyed "the proportion in folk tales" (177). Sayers argued that "folklore is a universal form, a great symbolic literature which represents the folk. It is something that came from the masses, not something that is put over on the masses. These folk tales have a definite structure. From the folk tale, one leams one's role in life; one leams the tragic dilemma of life, the battle between good and evil, between weak and strong. One leams that if he is kind, generous, and compas- sionate, he will win the Princess. The triumph is for all that is good in the human spirit" (117-18).

By: Frank Lombari Mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest Queen of all? In today’s pop culture, many traditional villains are beginning to be turned into antiheroes. ABC’s television show Once Upon a Time has taken a number of fairytale villains and provided them both a background and character growth. Specifically, the adaptation of the Evil Queen has shifted from primary antagonist to redeemed hero over the first three seasons. The show also displays her in the real-world rather than just a fairytale universe. I claim that this radical development occurs due three essential aspects: the Evil Queen and Snow White; motherhood; and lastly, fighting a powerful enemy.
