KASANA LUWEERO DIOCESE CARITAS KASANAENSIS NEWSLETTER July 2018 What is Caritas? Caritas” a Latin word, which means “Charity” or “Love” hails from God who is LOVE itself (1 Jn. 4:8). Due to his immense love, he created human beings in His own image (Gen 1:26) willed that we live a life of love with one another. Love is ex- pressed in a greater way when God himself sent his own Son to save us from the bondage of sin (Jn 3:6). Jesus came to give life in its fullness (Jn 10:10). Throughout his time on earth Jesus expressed the LOVE of God through his ministries to the poor, to the sick, and to those who did not understand God (Lk 4:18-19). Christ gave practical exam- ples in parables for example, of the Samaritan Woman (Lk. 10:29-37); In the last judgment Jesus shows that those who practice charity will be rewarded with the heavenly kingdom (Mt 25:33-45). Charity is sacred and secret (Mt 6:1-3). When done well, charity attracts eternal rewards. In the Early Church Caritas activities were very eminent in the lives of the Apostles (Acts 2:2-3). At this time Caritas start- ed formally when the seven men were chosen to assist in the distribution of aid to the needy communities. With time Caritas spread in different countries beginning with Germany in 1897 followed by Caritas Switzerland in 1901. As various countries adopted the spirit of Caritas, Pope Paul VI, in 1950 by then Archbishop Giovanni Montini, called all the Catholic Organizations involved in charitable and social works to address the worsening post-war problems. This was the very beginning of the “International Confederation of Catholic Charities” which later in 1957 became “Caritas Internationalis”. Here in Uganda, Caritas was born in 1958, but under the common name known as “The Office of Social Services and Economic Development”. The name “Caritas” was adopted in Uganda in 1999. Caritas, therefore is not a mere NGO. It is a Spiritual Mission of the Catholic Church that strives to offer human beings their due dignity. Caritas strives to teach communities to develop and make proper use of their God given talents to improve their living conditions (Mt: 25:14-30). Through Caritas people learn how to use their local resources to create a change in their own lives as part of their local contribution rather than waiting to be given (Mt: 15:32-39). Caritas encourages members of the community to transform their lives and to avoid living an idle life, but work for the food they eat (2 Thess 3:6-12). Caritas carries the preferential option for the poor as its first priority mandate.
