Introduction Wroclaw University of Technology is honoured to organize the 9th Central European Congress on Concrete Engineering. After successful eight previous editions of the congress taking place in Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic and Hungary the CCC 2013 is held in Wrocław (Poland) on September 4-6, 2013. In recent years, the intensive modernization process of urban areas is taking place. Shopping and administrative centers are being constructed, transportation systems are being modernized as well as underground infrastructure. The main aim of the Congress organized in Wrocław, Poland is to present and discuss the use of concrete in urban areas. We would like to discuss its use in architecture, development trends and construction technologies used in cities. The current CCC edition is going to focus on the most intensively developing regions of the modern societies according to the general congress topic: Concrete Structures in Urban Areas. The four founding countries - Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic and Hungary - decided in 2004 to cooperate more closely and to launch the CCC as a forum for an annual cross-border exchange of experience among principals, authorities, contractors, design engineers and academics in the field of construction materials and technology, concrete structures and civil engineering, as well as applied research and development. Poland joined the group in 2012 as a member country forming the current organization of CCC. History of Central European Congresses on Concrete Engineering: x The 1st Congress in Graz (Austria) in 2005 was dedicated to Fibre Reinforced Concrete in Practice. x The 2nd Congress in Hradec Kralove (Czech Republic) in 2006 had the main topic Concrete Structures for Traffic Network. x The 3rd Congress in Visegrád (Hungary) in 2007 focused on Innovative Materials and Technologies for Concrete Structures. x The 4th Congress in Opatija (Croatia) in 2008 concentrated on Concrete Engineering in Urban Development. x The 5th Congress in Baden (Austria) dealt with Innovative Concrete Technology in Practice. x The 6th Congress in Mariánské Lazně (Czech Republic) in 2010 had the main topic Concrete Structures for Challenging Time. x The 7th Congress in Balatonfüred (Hungary) in 2011 repeated the topic Innovative Materials and Technologies for Concrete Structures. x The 8th Congress on Plitvice Lakes (Croatia) in 2012 was dedicated to Durability of Concrete Structures. x The 9th Congress in Wrocław (Poland) is going to focus on the most intensively developing regions of the modern societies according to the general congress topic: Concrete Structures in Urban Areas. However, the late-Gothic town hall with a 66-meter high tower is the most magnificent building of this type in the country. The basement is the Świdnicka Cellar, one of the oldest gastronomic venues in Europe. The Old Town may be the heart of Wrocław, but its soul is in Ostrów Tumski. This ‘Cathedral Island’ within easy walking distance northeast of the market square was the first part of Wrocław to be settled by Slavic tribes in the 9th century. For centuries it was subject to ecclesiastical authority, today it is a romantic place, popular among lovers, walkers and tourists. The oldest building on Ostrów is an intimate late Romanesque church. St. Idzi, comes from the beginning of the 13th century. Cathedral John the Baptist was built in the gothic style in a place where earlier smaller temples stood. It was rebuilt several times and expanded. During the Second World War, during the siege of Festung Breslau, it was almost completely destroyed. Meticulously rebuilt, it plays the role of the "mother of churches" of Lower Silesia.
