CHRISTOPHER CRAIG JOHN TRUDELL AND THE SPIRIT OF LIFE “My ride showed up.” —Posted to John Trudell’s Facebook page just after he passed. The Santee Sioux activist, political philosopher, and poet/musician John Trudell died of cancer on December 8th, 2015. I was sitting in my office when I read the news. His death had been reported erroneously four days before, so it didn’t come as a complete surprise. Nevertheless, I experienced the same kind of sadness I felt when John Lennon died, as though, somehow, I had lost someone close to me even though we had never met. Trudell’s work had inspired me. He fought fearlessly for tribal rights. He also reached across class, gender, and racial lines in order to draw public attention to the oppressive treatment of indigenous people as a symptom of a larger ruling class imperative to colonize the western world. In numerous poems, speeches, and songs, he argues that western society has lost touch with what he calls the “spirit of life.” Industrial capitalism has led to the fall of western society’s natural relationship to the earth. The value of human life no longer resides in the reality that we are made of the earth. Instead it depends on advancing the interests of the very historical forces that had perpetrated our “spiritual genocide.” This learned disrespect for the earth cuts us off from the ancestral knowledge of what it means to be a human being. -

The American Indian Movement in the 1960s and 1970s The Red Power movement1 that arose in the 1960s and continued to the late 1970s may be perceived as the second wave of modern pan-Indianism 2. It differed in character from the previous phase of the modern pan-Indian crusade3 in terms of massive support, since the movement, in addition to mobilizing numerous groups of urban Native Americans hailing from different tribal backgrounds, brought about the resurgence of Indian ethnic identity and Indian cultural renewal as well .4 Under its umbrella, there emerged many native organizations devoted to address- ing the still unsolved “Indian question ”. Romantic notions, derived from the novels of 19th century German writer Karl May and American westerns shown on German television, combined with a subtle anti-Americanism might be responsible for the American Indian Movement (AIM) support groups that have been forming among students and bringing American Indian issues into tho arena of world affairs. While this enthusiasm for AIM among students has not generally been shared by academicians, recent scholarly interdisciplinary research in American Indian Studies has been conducted by anthropologists associated with the Center for North American Studies (ZENAF) at the University of Frankfurt. The topic of ethnic identity and cultural resistance has produced several case studies on cultural change and has stimulated an evaluation of fiction written by Native Americans in the context of a struggle for ethnic identity. The scholarly evaluation of AIM in the context of the long history of Indian resistance has also begun. Citations for 26 ZENAF publications on American Indian Studies (most written in German) are provided. -

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of Study Enough is a drama-thriller American movie released in 24 May 2002. It is a story about violence against women directed by Michael Apted. Screen writer by Nicholas Kazan, produced by Rob Cowan and Irwin Winkler and starring some popular movie stars such as Jennifer Lopez, Bill Campbell and Tessa Allen. Enough was produced and distributed by Columbia Pictures. The setting of place of this movie are in some of places such as in Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco and Nothern Michigan. The movie runtime is 116 minutes. Enough was released on DVD and came out on October 8, 2002. A VHS (Video Home System) edition was released on March 4, 2003 and the special edition was released on September 16, 2003. Michael Apted as the director was born in February 10, 1941 in Aylsbury, Buckinghamshire, England. In 1963 he joined a six-month apprenticeship scheme at Granada TV in Manchester, and stayed with the company for the next seven years. During this rich and fertile period, Apted went from researcher to director. In 2002 he became member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Documentary Branch). In 2003 he replaced Martha Coolidge as President of the DGA (Directors Guild of America). He was awarded the C.M.G. (Companion of the Most 1 2 Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George) for his services to British film and television industries in the 2008 Queen's Birthday Honors List. Michael Apted has directing 68 titles of movies, local programs, TV series and documentary.
