CONFERENCE THEME: “The Local Bridging the Global” Globalization is one of the global topics in geography. There is no exception in East Asia. In fact, translocal exchanges of ideas, commodities, cultures, languages, people, arts, and philosophies existed hundreds of years ago along the Road that expanded Asia towards the “new world.” Humans have overcome physical and technical barriers between geographic locations separated by long distances, and now can communicate with each other in much faster and easier ways. Roads, routes, sea lanes and airlines are not the only ones that connect the local to the global. Uniqueness, matchlessness, and originality are essential for the local to become globalized no matter where you are. As a matter of fact, everybody you meet has an original point of view. Open up your eyes and ears, and let’s work together to make things better. It’s a simple message. We need to believe in ourselves and realize the values of our society. From this perspective, let’s take this opportunity to place international insights on the local bridging the global!

FEATURED TOPICS The conference will feature more than 100 presentations and posters by young and leading scholars, researchers, educators, and students. We encourage all participants to expand their local and global thinking and play an active role in the conference. Major topics of the 2014 meeting will include (but not limited to):

3 FIELD TRIPS *NOTE: This schedule is subject to change in the event of extenuating circumstances and at the discretion of the organizing committee. Also, one or more field trips may not be available if the number of sign-ups falls short of the minimum requirement for operation.

Short field trips (July 7, 2014) 16:00-20:00 You will have options for the short field trip opportunity. Each field trip course may cost you an additional fee ranging from about ₩30,000 to ₩100,000.

Option 1) Gamcheon Culture Village A city rejuvenation project transformed a shantytown of the refugees into an internationally recognized colorful culture village. Lots of art works, the history, and cultural movements in the area will make you smile and think as you pass by the village. A quick, 15-minute walk to Mt. Cheonma may secure you a fantastic view of Busan Port and famous bridges of Busan with some fresh sea breeze.

Option 2) Downtown Busan Tour Jagalchi Fish Market is the largest fish market in Korea, and represents Busan as the biggest coastal city in the nation. You will be impressed by the variety of fresh sea products at the market. You name it, they have it! This is what CNN has to say: http://travel.cnn.com/cnngo-tv-busan-951671. Don’t forget nearby Yongdusan Park located near downtown Busan. You will see some awesome views of the Busan Port area from the top of the Yongdusan Tower or Busan Tower, which is the 129 meter-high, iconic structure of the city. The Bupyeong Night Market is another must-go place for you. Local foods, snacks, and unique atmosphere are waiting for you! If you are interested in movies, the Theater District of Busan is something you want to check before you leave the downtown area. A special street for the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) is quite crowed in October, when BIFF takes place.

Option 3) Deep Culture of Busan A great deal of history took place atop Geumjeong Mountain in Dongnae area of Busan. Hikers from around the world come to marvel at the views as well as the fortress erected there. Traditionally, a wall-fortress was erected in each town to keep it safe from invasions in Korea. In Busan, it is believed that Dongnae Fortress walls had been built after the period (the 1st century BC). However, the first mention about the Dongnae Fortress in historical records appears in 1021. Temple is located at the edge of Mt. Geumjeongsan, a famous mountain in Busan. The temple was constructed in 678 during the reign of Shilla King Munmu by the monk Uisang. At its largest, during the dynasty, it was much larger than it is today - with over 360 rooms and more than a thousand monks in residence. The temple was burned to the ground in 1592, but it was reconstructed in 1602. After the second accidental fire, it was rebuilt again in 1613. The mountain where Beomeosa is found has huge rock at the summit. People climb up the mountain to see a golden well at the summit area, which is known to never, ever dry up.

Option 4) Cruise with Tiffany21 Enjoying the beautiful 1.8km long coastal landscape with delicious dinner is another option during your stay in Busan. Tiffany21, the best sightseeing excursion ship of Busan, hosts up to 300 people with live music and convenient settings for a party, wedding, meetings, workshops, and special events. The two-hour dinner cruise will introduce you to Haeundae Beach, Gwangan Diamond Bridge, Nurimaru APEC House, and Oryukdo Island.

Field excursion (July 9, 2014) 08:00-18:00 A whole day field excursion will be planned to visit several outskirt areas of Busan. Some representative locations for visits may include:

1) Busan New Port is the principal gateway of Korea and handles about 45% of the nation’s total export cargo and 95% of the container throughput. With the geographical advantage of its location which connects Asia and North and South America, Busan New Port will play a vital role as the hub of seaborne transportation throughout the Northeast Asia.

2) Nakdong River Delta has the absolute beauty of the nature. Great estuary, sandbars, migratory birds, and the stunning scene of sunset will satisfy your expectations. Amisan Observatory, a three-story building sitting on the front tip of Mt. Amisan, is the place where you can overview the natural beauty with ease. Sandbars with various shapes and the wide mud stretch are constantly moving along the Nakdong River Estuary. The brackish environment, where freshwater meets seawater, attracts and spawns diverse species of animals and plants. Relatively cool summers and warm winters as well as sandy, reedy river banks make it a perfect location for birds to lay and hatch eggs. As a matter of fact, this paradise of migratory birds welcomes about 130,000 migratory birds of 167 different species every year.

3) The Naval Academy, which has grown to be one of the best educational institutions in Korea, is dedicated to educating leaders of the Korean Navy. Knowledgeable, respectful, and physically and spiritually strong Navy scholarship is borne and raised here. Responsibility and honor as a commander and patriotic and sacrificial spirits are 4 most emphasized at the Academy. It is located in Jinhae, a district of Changwon, a major city near Busan. Jinhae is almost completely surrounded by mountains covered with pine trees and famous for its annual cherry blossom festival every spring. It dates back to 1963, and it is an artistic and cultural event.

4) Upo Wetland is the biggest natural inland wetland in Korea and it was designated as Ecological Conservation Area by the Ministry of environment in 1997. A countless number of birds, amphibians, mammals, fishes, reptiles, and others are flourishing in the area.

TRAVEL AWARDS The program committee will award the “Young Geographer Prize” to the authors of some excellent presentations. All young geographers, scientists and researchers (within three years of their Ph.D or under 40 years of age) are strongly encouraged to register for this prize. Applicants for the award will be evaluated based on their presentation skills, quality of their research, and academic potentials. Award winners will be announced at the closing ceremony of the conference on July 8, 2014. Winners will receive an award certificate and the cash prize, which is about the half amount of the registration fee.
