In response to a suggestion from a member, we are introducing this year, a new section entitled Short Notes. The section will enable readers either to make substantial comments on articles over points of interpretation or fact, or to inform our readership of matters of historical interest which do not merit discussion in a full-length article. The council of the society wishes to thank Mr Bromley for indexing this volume. University of Liverpool /. /. Kermode University of Manchester C. B. Phillips May 1980
