Organisation of the EDE design course

A Cooperation of GAIA Netherlands foundation with ‘Landgoed Algoed’ This EDE course is organized by the GAIA Netherlands foundation together with GAIA Education and the community of ‘Landgoed Algoed’. We will live together and work together at the property of Landgoed Algoed.

GAIA Netherlands offers sustainability education. They are promoting flourishing communities within planetary boundaries. You can read more about the vision, mission and goals on the website of GAIA Netherlands - www.gaia-nederland.nl.

About the curriculum The curriculum of the EDE is based on experience and expertise developed by a network of teachers of some of the most successful ecovillages and ecological community projects. The curriculum is the result of years of cooperation with teachers from all over the world. These teachers are members of 'GEESE' which means 'Global Ecovillage Educators for Sustainable Earth'.

The first EDE course was offered in 2005 in Findhorn, Scotland. Since then it has been organized more than 200 times all over the world in 34 countries, enriching the lives of more than 5000 participants.

The curriculum is an official contribution to the UN decennium of education for sustainable development.

The foundation of the training is the 4-D framework for holistic design which goes beyond the conventional three-dimensional sustainability model. The framework integrates social, ecological and economic solutions with a more holistic approach where the critical approach of a holistic worldview and change of values are recognized as the main drivers for behavioral change and cultural transformation.

You can read more about the curriculum on GEN (Global Ecovillages Network). De link of GEN is: https://ecovillage.org/our-work/education/

And the website of GAIA Education: https://www.gaiaeducation.org/face-to-face/ede-programmes/

The Dutch EDE vision In this EDE we try to create a close interaction between teachers and students

and between students themselves. Participants with expertise in specific fields are

invited to share their knowledge with the whole group. Hands-on activities will be

facilitated by community members of Landgoed Algoed. We as teachers will

often participate in group – and other processes, partly as

supervisors/counsellors, but also co-discovering the actual teachings and the learning process as result of the current (socio-cultural) situation.

Authenticity is achieved by using real situations within learning environments. The exercises will draw on real situations from participants’ and facilitators’ lives, so that the learning will be both an understanding of theory and abstract concepts and – often more important – a deepening experience of the applied concepts in concrete socio-cultural situations. The several levels of learning environment are;

● your individual inner universe with your personal imprints from your past life, your world-views, your

stories, feelings, possibilities of thoughts.

● the participants as a group with its inter-individual dynamics like shared cultural backgrounds as well

as inter-cultural dynamics; personal reactions on one another; co-creations like mutual support and

potential shared ideas as well as conflicts and misunderstandings.

● the different ecovillages and excursions, with all its existing and tangible examples.

The Dutch EDE program The program consists of several components:

Theory

The theory is explained on the basis of the

twenty themes as illustrated in the sustainability

mandala, with the help of exercises and

examples. The theory is linked to the

experiences gained during the exercises and the

knowledge, skills and personal experiences of

the participants. We work with an EDE workbook

and EDE journal.

9

Practical skills

The EDE uses many different methods. The theory is also applied in practice. From the beginning, the group forms a community in which tasks are divided among the participants. In addition, we regularly practice practical skills, such as working with clay, gardening in the permaculture garden, making art, building sustainable and making designs. There are 14 hands-on session planned during this EDE. It is possible to get experience in the seven working circles of Landgoed Algoed, like the permaculture garden group, sustainable building group, organizing events group, kitchen group, house and area cleaning group etc.

Field trips

The training is given at various locations. A guided tour is organized at each location. Excursions in the area are also part of the curriculum. The following locations are included:

● Living village festival ● Energy park Saerbeck ● GEN conference in

Your own learning path

At the beginning of the EDE training you get the opportunity to formulate the goals you want to work on during the course. During the EDE training we will concentrate on different ways to work on our own goals. We work with peer-to-peer groups, where you can reflect on your own processes in pairs. We also work with 'home' groups (CLANS), which reflect on group processes, the content of the EDE, personal goals and feedback.

Ishi Crosby

Ishi Crosby works from an integrated ecological and social approach to the healing of the Earth. As a Permaculture designer and teacher, he has almost twenty years of experience in designing and constructing sustainable food gardens. He has developed the concept of "Integrated Landscapes": landscapes that are designed in such a way that everything that a person needs, such as a place to live, food, water, energy, etc., is produced on site. Ishi is involved in Permaculture on a daily basis and has created food gardens for various projects and clients in the EU. He is currently working in the Netherlands with clients and local groups such as the Transition Town movement, Eco-village projects and an Urban agriculture project in The Hague. At Centrum Wilgenhoeve he is busy with the construction of an Earthhouse (a zero energy and CO2 neutral house) and the construction and further development of the Permaculture Garden. He also provides training on the practical use of archetypes and mythology for daily life. He has years of experience with the "Open Space" method. Open Space is a very efficient way to solve problems in groups and to make decisions. Open Space is fully in line with the three ethical principles of Permaculture: care for the Earth, care for people and fair sharing.

She graduated in philosophy and teacher education, and mainly worked in organizing & teaching jobs in Belgium, Spain & Italy. As a travel agent, tour manager for artists, and teacher of philosophy- ethics-cultural sciences, she was always looking for ways to optimise the social interaction, the participation & the collaboration between the participants. During an alternative school project in Brazil in 2004 (Edu On Tour), she discovered inclusive ways of collaborating & discovered the art of facilitation. She soon started facilitating (instead of teaching) workshops, classes & events, and continues to do so. Today she is passionate about experience-based learning, expressive arts, spiritual ecology & Dragon Dreaming. In her free time she loves painting & illustrating, dancing & singing. Usually she was in places where a stunning team performance had to be done in a very short time or where underperforming teams must shine again quickly. The goal: make the team, guests and manager happy and deliver them a great and amazing time with mostly ordinary things. She studied pedagogy at the University of Amsterdam and became a primary school teacher with a passion for a more holistic education system. She pores over music-education, psychomotor / movement-based learning, cooperative learning and a lot of theories that stimulate brain-friendly and natural learning environments. She believes that exciting experiences and a warm ambiance are necessary to develop wondering, expression skills and body awareness. Hands-on, minds-on, hearts-on activities let us learn, grow and love. Now she tries to combine all here different experiences and personal love for nature, dancing, singing, theatre, playing, spiritual grow, unboxing- thinking and system work in her own business: De Verwonderkring; to help children, adults and teams to shine their own powerful uniqueness.

Accommodation and Facilities

Landgoed AlGoed

The Algoed Estate is an outdoor community center. The estate is located in the beautiful Dutch rural area Twekkelo, near the cities of Hengelo and Enschede. People live and work together at Landgoed AlGoed. It is managed by four people who also live on the estate. In addition, fifty volunteers work in the garden, in the kitchen, and with several activities. Landgoed AlGoed has its own forest, permaculture vegetable garden, meadows and wooded banks framed with streams. It forms a welcome meeting place in the middle of nature. This environment gives room for personal growth and awareness, space to rediscover your original self and also space to just be. The foundation organizes, supports, and initiates activities that invite people to (re) connect with nature and with who they really are. They have the motto; 'to inspire, connect and grow'. The way to do this is by working together, developing ideas and learning from each other. The Foundation finds it’s important that people feel at home, and that volunteers can develop themselves and grow in what they are good at and want in life.
