His professional work includes more than one hundred peer-reviewed research articles ranging from the pharmacology of memory to the first report of a “neural prosthetic” to restore human memory using the brain’s own neural codes. He consults with authors to put the “hard” science in “Hard SF” and has written both fiction and nonfiction for Baen Books. -

Bill Fawcett___________________________________________________ 24951 Middle Fork Road Barrington, Illinois 60010 U.S.A. 8472779686 [email protected] Bill has been a professor, teacher, corporate executive, and college dean. His entire life has been spent in the creative fields and managing other creative individuals. He is one of the founders of Mayfair Games, a board and role play gaming company. As an author Bill has written or coauthored over a dozen books and dozens of articles and short stories. As a book packager, a person who prepares series of books from concept to production for major publishers, his company Bill Fawcett & Associates has packaged over 250 titles for virtually every major publisher. He founded, and later sold, what is now the largest hobby shop in Northern Illinois. Bill’s first commercial writing appeared as articles in the Dragon Magazine and include some of the earliest appearances of classes and monster types for dungeons and Dragons. With Mayfair Games created, wrote, and edited many of the over 50 “Role Aides” Role Playing Game modules and supplements released by Mayfair in the 1970s and 1980s. During this period he also designed almost a dozen board games, including several Charles Roberts Award (Gaming's Emmy) winners such as Empire Builder and Sanctuary. Bill Fawcett continues to develop new internet projects. His novl writing began with the juvenile series, Swordquest for Ace Penguin Putnam Publishing. He wrote or cowrote four fantasy novels, beginning with the Lord of Cragsclaw. The Fleet series he created with David Drake has become a classic of military science fiction. -

THE TECHNOLOGY OF CONSENT: AMERICAN SCIENCE FICTION AND CULTURAL CRISIS IN THE 1980s A Dissertation Submitted to the Committee on Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Science TRENT UNIVERSITY Peterborough, Ontario, Canada (c) Copyright by Chad Andrews 2016 Cultural Studies Ph.D. Graduate Program May 2016 ABSTRACT The Technology of Consent: American Science Fiction and Cultural Crisis in the 1980s Chad Andrews The 1980s in the United States have come into focus as years of extensive ideological and socioeconomic fracture. A conservative movement arose to counter the progressive gains of previous decades, neoliberalism became the nation’s economic mantra, and détente was jettisoned in favour of military build-up. Such developments materialized out of a multitude of conflicts, a cultural crisis of ideas, perspectives, and words competing to maintain or rework the nation’s core structures. In this dissertation I argue that alongside these conflicts, a crisis over technology and its ramifications played a crucial role as well, with the American public grasping for ways to comprehend a nascent technoculture. Borrowing from Andrew Feenberg, I define three broad categories of popular conceptualization used to comprehend a decade of mass technical and social transformations: the instrumental view, construing technology as a range of efficient tools; the substantive view, insisting technology is an environment that determines its subjects; and a critical approach, -

The first five trials, wisely, are paper snowballs which my cat at least is enjoying. By and large, though, her tastes differ from yours and mine. Good thing, too.) It is a hard, hard thing to write about someone you admire hell out of, without sounding like an ad man pushing a new brand of filter-tips or next year's model Fordrolet. This is not my intention, but if it seems to seep in around the edges -- well, you know ... If you've read de Camp, that is, you know. I've never met Mister de Camp, so I can't give you a word portrait or even a line-drawing as to lineament and design, favorite frowns and smirks, taste in cravats, etc. All I know is what I've read in the books with the rocket ships on the covers and the ones without the rocketships, too. So let me tell you about the L. Sprague de Camp^ know. He went and wrote whole big stacks of things. The first one I read was called LEST DARKNESS FALL* Which is why I read more.
