Klunker Unit

Mike Busby, Steve Sawyer and Dick Hart worked on the Klunkers in preparation for the parade season this summer. Steve Sawyer volunteered the use of his hangar at the airport and Maria Busby fed them lunch. Although we didn’t get as much work done on the cars we still were able to accomplish quite a bit. The cars will take more work but it is felt they will be in much better condition. We are looking for another driver, especially somebody not too large that can fit into the car, so anybody interested should contact Jim Sweet or Mike Busby. We have received the old Klunker tow truck which we are hoping to get in running shape soon also. It was great to have a couple of the mini-bikers working together with the Klunker Unit to get the cars into shape.

ESOTERIKA

I recently got a fair amount of good-natured, well-deserved ribbing. The educational I gave at the April AASR regular meeting was bound to generate some controversy, and laughs. It was a commentary on Arturo De Hoyos’ article on Esoterica in the March/April 2017 Journal. His point was that Esoterica is based on the study of Cabbalism, Hermetism, Rosacrucianism, and other recondite “isms” that often get derisive comments from the more intellectual brethren like him. Fortunately, De Hoyos concluded that whatever view we take, either Romantic, or Authentic—read intellectual, we need to be respectful of the other side and be well-read on the main points these contrasting philosophies are based upon. In presenting his article I made it clear I held a more Romantic view of Masonry, much like ’s who clearly intended to get to the essence of the Perennial Philosophy—the “Fatherhood of God, the Brotherhood of men, and the Immortality of the soul.” Pike believed that getting hung up on words and dogmatism was at the root of conflicts among the world’s religions and ideologies. But, like Romantics since the dawn of Mankind, Pike felt knowledge is available to all men everywhere, as a gift of the Ineffable to those who ‘divest them of all distinctions and equipment that are not in keeping with Humble, Reverent and Childlike nature which is now our duty to assume.” In other words, “Neither Mithraism or belongs ultimately to historians. They are matters of the heart and soul, and by their very nature beyond the laws and narrow definition of discursive thoughts.”* Authentic brethren like De Hoyos feel that modern Masonry, while holding some commonalities with “Esoteric” traditions before 1717, is an institution that must be based on historical facts. Consequently, any “hysterical” claim that Masonry dates back to Egypt has no validity. They embrace the scholarly belief that concrete objectivity should be the main currency of our discourse. I respectfully disagreed in that educational, eliciting comic comments like “you know more than De Hoyos.” LOL, but, in my view, Esoterica is not founded on any “isms,” but the openness to be gifted a basic knowledge of who we are in relationship to God, regardless of our studies and beliefs. This is why I repeatedly stated that I have read a lot in my life. Unfortunately, I failed to convey the point that all those books and studies are but fools’ gold, empty words that more often than not become obstacles between us and God’s gift of the True Word, available to all since men walked the Earth, regardless of “isms.” When I discovered the futility of searching in books and “isms” I began to tell people I had joined a recovery group, “Intellectual Anonymous.” I still do. But, like brother De Hoyos stated, these contrasting viewpoints need to be BALANCED. Pike, the poet, understood this in relation to ESOTERIKA. He intended his book so titled to be an anagram—SEEK RATIO, or seek balance. Ask yourselves, my brethren, why the ’s sword points to the naked heart while it guards the Book of Constitution.

From the High Priest & Prophet It is Trowel Time Hey, my brother nobles, it is summer. It is time for each of us to dig out our trowel and put it to work. We all have some trowel work to do. I know I do. You do remember the purpose of your trowel, don’t you? The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Freemasonry by S. Brent Morris at page 221 defines the trowel as follows: “The trowel is an instrument used by operative Masons to spread the cement which unites the several parts of a building into one common mass; but we, as Free and Accepted Masons, are taught to use it for the more noble and glorious purpose of spreading the cement of brotherly love and affection; that cement which unites us into one sacred band or society of friends and brothers, among whom no contention should ever exist, save that noble contention, or rather emulation, of who can best work and best agree.” So, if I might be so bold as to give each of you a challenge, I challenge each brother and noble to use his trowel to spread brotherly love and affection. Let us unite into a sacred band of friends and brothers. Let us make sure that no contention exists among us. We owe no less to each other and to our self. Please join me in this effort.

Your brother,

Leon Crockett, High Priest & Prophet

Where’s the Fire?!!!

El Kalah Shrine owns a 1939 Ford Fire Truck which is in Vernal, and has been since 1992. This truck was donated by Kennecott Copper Mine about 40 years ago. It needs body and engine work as well as new tires and paint to get it parade ready. It will take manpower and money. Can you help with your time or money to get her restored and on the road? If you are interested in helping in anyway, please contact Jon Harris, PP, 801-966-4034 or 801-755-0546. Donations can be made to "El Kalah Fire Truck Restoration Fund".

The clown unit held a face painting session at Jon Harris's home recently and we all benefited from each other's experiences with materials and techniques. Thank you, Jon and Louise for your hospitality. Our next clown potluck/meeting will be held on June 25th at 4pm at Richard and Annette Johnson's home. Our agenda will include planning for upcoming parades.

Richard (Rhineheart) Johnson, Klown Prez

Aloha!

Aloha Nui Loa (All My Love), Lady Rachel Sweet

Last month we had a small group of Ladies from Iris Court #47 go to the Ladies Oriental Shrine North America Grand Council Session in Sandusky Ohio. This year over 600 ladies attended with about 60 men total. It is a great time for us to get together to meet with Ladies from all over the country to share ideas and joys. Each year the Grand High Priestess that is installed has a special project, the 2016-2017 Grand High Priestess’ special project was a 4D Stereo Photogrammetric Imaging System for Cleft-Lip and Pallet Service for the Chicago Shriner’s Children’s Hospital. Through countless donations there was over $500,000 raised for this project. It was a wonderful reminder of good all our organizations do. My Grand Officer, Lady Janet Larsen, was installed as Grand High Priestess on the last night of the session, she announced that her project is a rehabilitative playground for children at the Honolulu Hospital.
