State Meet Stat Book 2020 TRACK & FIELD STATE MEET STAT BOOK UP TO AND INCLUDING PERFORMANCES FROM THE 2019 STATE MEET History, team champions, runner-up, event champions and State Meet and Class Records 1906-2019 IOWA HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION BOONE, IOWA Updated December 17, 2019 - 1 - PREFACE For the past 48 years, the IHSAA has published this stat book. It represents the research and organization of many people who have been at the forefront and behind-the-scenes of Iowa prep track and field. Our deepest thanks go to Mo Kelley, former IHSAA Publications Director, for his efforts from 1970-June 2001 for launching this book. While this book identifies mainly the past team and event champions, it also represents the IHSAA’s admiration and respect for all the athletes, coaches, officials, and administrators who have nurtured our track and field program to the status it currently enjoys. We hope that as you review the names of our champions, you will note past Olympians - including champions and medal winners, collegiate champions, All-Americans, American and world record holders, collegiate and professional athletes in other sports, and a countless number of successful individuals in all walks of life each who has breathed life into the IHSAA credo of Sportsmanship and Citizenship. To no one’s surprise the same is true of the near champions, other place winners and participants who are not found on the following pages, but share in the tradition of greatness known as Iowa high school track and field. Each remains a hometown champion and hero because of his sacrifice and dedication. That is the legacy that in 2018 celebrates its 113th year and serves as a strong testimonial of the wonderful experience of being a high school athlete. A THANK YOU TO ALL Our gratitude is expressed to Terry Hersom former sports editor of the Sioux City Journal, JR Ogden of the Cedar Rapids Gazette sports department, Matt Coss of the Quad City Times, Dennis Johnson and Ric Powell of the Des Moines Schools, Mark Hurley of Mingo and the late Paul Morrison of Drake University for their assistance in securing the first names of the event champions to former IHSAA Information Director and historian Bud Legg as the book has expanded. To the many coaches, athletic directors, and administrators in our schools, fans, and to our great friend - the late Mike Henderson, for his wealth of information. We also invite you to review other information in the Archives Section on the IHSAA Track & Field page. We are also indebted to former Waterloo West track star Jim Young and his wife Ginger for much of information on the State Indoor Meets, which is now posted in the Track & Field Archives. This year’s edition is our most complete history of team and event champions. From 1915-25 State Meet research, sometimes got confused with a meet at Grinnell College called the State High School and College Meet. Virtually all event champions now have their first and last names listed. Those who read this book know that we always welcome corrections. We are continuing our research for the names of the runners of winning relays teams and when we at least 80% we will list relay runners. We invite coaches and readers to review the information contained in this book and on the track page of our website <www.iahsaa.org>. The archives contain an all-time best list of performances, with the first group being metric times and the second group being the all-time yardage bests. We welcome corrections and additions in that list. As we receive verification of performances we may have missed they are added. Times that appear in hundredths are fully- automatic as they are in this book. Other performances are rounded up to the nearest tenth in accordance with official track and field timing procedures. No + or - .24 performances are listed since that quantification is intended for seeding purposes only. The performances in this book are the actual ones recorded at the time. This Stat Book, like others we produce at the IHSAA, is updated annually and available in PDF format on our website. We try and improve the quality and accuracy of the information each year. A special thanks to track administrator Jared Chizek of our staff for his assistance. With over 8,500 names of athletes and schools plus performances, an error(s) in spelling, a typo or an inaccuracy can occur. If you discover any please contact Chris Cuellar at the IHSAA by e-mail at [email protected] or by regular mail: Chris Cuellar; IHSAA; PO Box 10; Boone, IA 50036-0010. - 2 - TABLE OF CONTENTS State Meet History & Record Information ............................................................................................................................... 4 Includes an overview of the sport; 1924 Cambridge - June 13-14 As in 1920, all finals were held on the second day except the walk, with heats on the first day, while all semi-finals took place on June 14, except for the 400m hurdles. A number of athletes did not make the top-4 in the trials, but were nevertheless selected because of their consistency in previous competition, showing a far greater flexibility of approach than was to be seen after World War II. The principal athletes who benefited were: Loren Murchison, Leroy Brown, John Watters, Alan Helffrich, George Lermond, Alfred LeConey, William Comins, Ernest Oberst and Pat McDonald. The New York Times noted that there were 419 entries, compared with 259 in 1920. Timing was with 1/10th and 1/5th of a second watches. Times are shown in tenths of a second for uniformity of presentation. The venue was efficiently served by the Boston Elevated Railway, which enabled large crowds to quickly get to and from the stadium. 100 Meters 15.20 Hr 1. 1. Chester Bowman (Syracuse) 10.6 2=. 3. DIVISION I MEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2016 Championship 2 History 8 All-Time Team Results 36 2016 CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS Florida wins 2016 NCAA Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship: Florida created enough points from the sprints, hurdles and jumps to claim another national title as they accumulated 62 points to win the NCAA Championship at Hayward Field on Friday in front of a crowd of 12,244. It’s the second outdoor national title for the Gators since sharing the 2013 team championship. “It was really interesting how it happened,” said Florida head coach Mike Holloway. “I told my wife what I thought we could do, and that I thought that we could win this thing. It was just a matter of the kids trusting in themselves.” Arkansas, powered by the exploits of Jarrion Lawson’s three individual victories, finished as the team runner-up with 56 points while Texas A&M, fueled by a 800m collegiate record from freshman Donavan Brazier, placed third with 50 points. A pair of wins for Oregon, by Devon Allen in the 110m hurdlers and a 15th NCAA title for Edward Cheserek in winning the 5,000m, assisted the Ducks as they placed fourth with 48 points. LSU swept the relay events on the way to finishing fifth in team scoring with 41 points. Cheserek withstood another challenge at 5,000m with a winning time of 13:25.59. Stanford’s Sean McGorty (13:26.10) and Patrick Tiernan of Villanova (13:27.07) placed second and third after leading different stages of the race.

  • Outdoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S
Outdoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Texas A&M sweeps team titles; men, women each win 1,600-meter relay title to clinch third straight team crowns: Texas A&M swept the men’s and women’s titles at the NCAA outdoor championships June 11, becoming the fi rst school to post dual three-peat champions. The men needed to win the 1,600-meter relay for their third straight crown, and anchor Tabarie Henry held off LSU’s Riker Hylton to clinch the victory in 3:00.62. The Aggies fi nished with 55 points, one ahead of Florida State and two ahead of Florida. Florida State built a nine-point lead early on the fi nal day as the Seminoles won the 400-meter relay. Ngonidzashe Makusha, 100-meter and long-jump champion, ran the second leg of the relay and helped contribute 22-1/2 points to Florida State’s team total for the meet. “I’m loving it. It’s been a good weekend,” Makusha said. But the Seminoles didn’t make the 1,600-meter relay fi nal, which came back to haunt them. Florida, which won the 400-meter relay a year ago, botched an exchange and failed to fi nish a race it was expected to score in. But a pair of Gators made up for that in the triple jump. Christian Taylor won the event with a leap of 58 feet, 4-3/4 inches, which would have shattered the meet record of 57 feet, 7-3/4 inches had it not been wind-aided.
