2020 TRACK & FIELD STATE MEET STAT BOOK UP TO AND INCLUDING PERFORMANCES FROM THE 2019 STATE MEET History, team champions, runner-up, event champions and State Meet and Class Records 1906-2019 IOWA HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION BOONE, IOWA Updated December 17, 2019 - 1 - PREFACE For the past 48 years, the IHSAA has published this stat book. It represents the research and organization of many people who have been at the forefront and behind-the-scenes of Iowa prep track and field. Our deepest thanks go to Mo Kelley, former IHSAA Publications Director, for his efforts from 1970-June 2001 for launching this book. While this book identifies mainly the past team and event champions, it also represents the IHSAA’s admiration and respect for all the athletes, coaches, officials, and administrators who have nurtured our track and field program to the status it currently enjoys. We hope that as you review the names of our champions, you will note past Olympians - including champions and medal winners, collegiate champions, All-Americans, American and world record holders, collegiate and professional athletes in other sports, and a countless number of successful individuals in all walks of life each who has breathed life into the IHSAA credo of Sportsmanship and Citizenship. To no one’s surprise the same is true of the near champions, other place winners and participants who are not found on the following pages, but share in the tradition of greatness known as Iowa high school track and field. Each remains a hometown champion and hero because of his sacrifice and dedication. That is the legacy that in 2018 celebrates its 113th year and serves as a strong testimonial of the wonderful experience of being a high school athlete. A THANK YOU TO ALL Our gratitude is expressed to Terry Hersom former sports editor of the Sioux City Journal, JR Ogden of the Cedar Rapids Gazette sports department, Matt Coss of the Quad City Times, Dennis Johnson and Ric Powell of the Des Moines Schools, Mark Hurley of Mingo and the late Paul Morrison of Drake University for their assistance in securing the first names of the event champions to former IHSAA Information Director and historian Bud Legg as the book has expanded. To the many coaches, athletic directors, and administrators in our schools, fans, and to our great friend - the late Mike Henderson, for his wealth of information. We also invite you to review other information in the Archives Section on the IHSAA Track & Field page. We are also indebted to former Waterloo West track star Jim Young and his wife Ginger for much of information on the State Indoor Meets, which is now posted in the Track & Field Archives. This year’s edition is our most complete history of team and event champions. From 1915-25 State Meet research, sometimes got confused with a meet at Grinnell College called the State High School and College Meet. Virtually all event champions now have their first and last names listed. Those who read this book know that we always welcome corrections. We are continuing our research for the names of the runners of winning relays teams and when we at least 80% we will list relay runners. We invite coaches and readers to review the information contained in this book and on the track page of our website <www.iahsaa.org>. The archives contain an all-time best list of performances, with the first group being metric times and the second group being the all-time yardage bests. We welcome corrections and additions in that list. As we receive verification of performances we may have missed they are added. Times that appear in hundredths are fully- automatic as they are in this book. Other performances are rounded up to the nearest tenth in accordance with official track and field timing procedures. No + or - .24 performances are listed since that quantification is intended for seeding purposes only. The performances in this book are the actual ones recorded at the time. This Stat Book, like others we produce at the IHSAA, is updated annually and available in PDF format on our website. We try and improve the quality and accuracy of the information each year. A special thanks to track administrator Jared Chizek of our staff for his assistance. With over 8,500 names of athletes and schools plus performances, an error(s) in spelling, a typo or an inaccuracy can occur.
