SHIRLEY Directed by: Josephine Decker Written by: Sarah Gubbins Starring: Elisabeth Moss, Odessa Young, Michael Stuhlbarg, Logan Lerman Running Time: 107 Minutes CORNERSTONE FILMS CONTACTS: Publicity: Anna Bohlin/ [email protected] Marketing: Joanne Michael/ [email protected] SYNPOSIS Fred and Rose move to a small Vermont college town in pursuit of a job for Fred as an assistant professor of literature. The young couple receives an offer for free room and board from professor Stanley Hyman, as long as Rose agrees to spend time cleaning up the home and looking after his wife, acclaimed horror author Shirley Jackson. At first Fred and Rose detest the rocky household of the eccentric couple, but they eventually establish deep bonds with their counterparts, which will test the limits of their young love. Director Josephine Decker makes an exciting return with a biographical portrait brought alive with energy and imagination, based on a novel by Susan Merrill and screenplay by Sarah Gubbins. Shirley is a fresh take on the period drama, full of contemporary intrigue and dynamic in style. It features a stellar lead cast—Elisabeth Moss, Michael Stuhlbarg, Odessa Young, and Logan Lerman—who all return to the Festival to give another memorable performance. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Shirley Jackson was a wildly unorthodox human and storyteller. Encountering her work was like finding a map towards becoming the kind of artist I would like to be. Daring. Intimate. Structured yet dreamlike. Shirley’s work rides on the skin between imagined and real, seducing with its oddness and humble cracks until you can’t tell if you’re looking up the stairwell or into your own mouth.

  • Miguel Arteta on Learning How to Run a Movie Set
September 15, 2017 - Miguel Arteta is a Puerto Rican film and television director best known for his films Chuck & Buck, The Good Girl, and most recently, Beatriz at Dinner. His next film is the experimental comedy Duck Butter, starring Alia Shawkat. Here Arteta recounts the practical education he received on movie sets working with the likes of Sidney Lumet, Sydney Pollack, and Jonathan Demme. "His curiosity and the way he was just actively responding, like letting himself respond in a joyful way to people and to situations, was incredible," says Arteta of Demme. "He was directing, not controlling. He was responding. If you control it then it's going to be a boring movie. You have to respond so that you feel there's life beyond the frame. The audience feels like they're coming on an exploration with you." As told to Charlie Sextro, 3025 words. Tags: Film, Process, Collaboration, Beginnings, Education. Miguel Arteta on learning how to run a movie set Did you have much experience on set before you started directing? I did. First of all, I worked on student films when I was at university, but when I moved to New York, my friend hooked me up to be a location scout for Sidney Lumet on two of his films, Q&A and Family Business. I didn’t know New York. I had to lie because they were shooting in Spanish Harlem for Q&A and I said, “Yeah, definitely. I’m Puerto Rican, I know.” My job was to drive the van to meet Timothy Hutton, star of Q&A, and Sidney at his house in the Upper East Side.

Likewise, a lack of representation has also been a consistent issue, with this misrepresentation occurring more frequently to certain groups. In this thesis, I look at the role of the Latina by employing a content analysis of Latinas’ roles in both contemporary US indie and blockbuster films, while utilizing an intersectional feminist framework. The main goal of this research was to recognize if indie films offer greater representation for Latinas over blockbusters. Four films were analyzed to draw conclusions about how Latinas in US contemporary films are represented and sexualized. It was concluded that a lack of representation is perpetuated in both indie and blockbuster films, with blockbusters proving to carry the tradition of misrepresentation with greater frequency than indies. Amiche in affari (2020) Una commedia al femminile con Salma Hayek imprenditrice spietata. Un film di Miguel Arteta con Salma Hayek, Rose Byrne, Tiffany Haddish, Jennifer Coolidge, Ari Graynor, Billy Porter, Karan Soni, Jessica St. Clair, Ryan Hansen, Lisa Kudrow. Genere Commedia durata 83 minuti. Produzione USA 2020.
