Investment in the Alcoy-Dalaguete Area, South of Cebu City There is a fast growing trend about 90 km South of the City: The area with the two towns including Dalaguete and Alcoy attract more and more holiday makers, weekend tourists, retirees and foreign expatriates. There are some reasons, why an investment in this area is one of the best future investments in booming Cebu Island. Hotels and Resorts There is rapid increase of the number of overnight stays with the local Hotels and Resorts. There is also a fast growing number of private holiday apartements and vacation houses rented by foreign tourists, retirees and holiday guests, mostly generated by Airbnb and other related websites. Restaurants and Shops According to the increased tourist figures there are now more restaurants with international meals and native restaurants as well, than anywhere else at the South of Cebu City. Many shops offer all kind of food and items of daily needs. Diving and Snorkelling The foreshore area of Alcoy – Dalaguete provides many interesting dive spots and marvellous snorkeling places. During the last five years the number of Dive Centers and Dive schools increased up to four with bullish tendency. Near to Whaleshark Watching A trip to the world famous Whaleshark watching in Oslob needs only a ride by bus or boat of 25 minutes The new Pier and Waterside Promenade of Dalaguete The Municipality of Dalaguete extended the existing Pier for a new wharf and docking area for all kind of ferry vessels and leisure boats. It enables many new connections e.g. to the International Airport of Panglao (soon to open) or excursions to nearby dream islands. The ambitious Muncipality plans also to build a yacht and leisure boat port at the southern end of the pier. The nearly finished Water Promenade beside of the Pier is the longest between Cebu City and Dumaguete/Negros and will offer a relaxing stroll along the shore between many tourist shops, restaurants, snack and beverage bars and open air entertainments. Tingko Beach in Alcoy This famous white sand beach is a rare beach paradise for enjoying bathing and swimming in the crystal clear water, no matter if its low tide or high tide. There are also many excursion boats, offering short or longer trips along the shore and around some beautiful coral reefs..

A DISAPPEARING TRADITION: GAPAS (COTTON, Gossypmium hirsutum) AS TEXTILE AND MEDICINE IN SANTANDER, CEBU Zona Hildegarde S. Amper The utilization of available flora (and fauna), is closely linked to culture as well as to the larger national and international forces which affect local environments. The proliferation of specific species in a given locale largely depends on how it is utilized. This paper documents local knowledge on gapas or cotton [Gossypmium hirsutum] as crop, as textile and as medicine over time in Santander, a south- eastern Cebu town, in order to determine its place in Santander culture and recommend steps for the conservation and revitalization of an important natural and cultural heritage. External forces such as the market have affected the proliferation of gapas (cotton) as a crop in this town. Keywords: Ecological anthropology, cotton, local knowledge, natural cultural heritage Introduction The current study revolves around the cotton plant traditionally grown in a south-eastern town of Cebu, the Philippines and how its proliferation and utilization in the locality has been affected by colonial and post-colonial market forces over time. Ecological anthropologists have studied various strategies of human adaptation to as well as human impacts on the environment. Ethnoecology as a field in ecological anthropology explores how nature is viewed by human cultures through their beliefs and knowledge, and how distinct groups of humans manage natural resources (Toledo 2002). Larger national and international forces have however affected how human cultures currently utilize natural resources; with the rapidly expanding world capitalist system and globalization, local cultures’ utilization of existing flora and fauna has been affected.

Briones, publisher, judge, Congressman, and Philippine Senator 1902 By virtue of Public Act No. 322, civil government is re established in Cebu by the American authorities. Apperance of the first issue of Ang Camatuoran, an early Cebu newspaper published by the Catholic Church. 1956 Sergio Osmeña, Jr., assumes the Cebu City mayorship, succeeding Pedro B. Clavano. 79 A Preliminary Study of Ceiling Murals from Five Southeastern Cebu Churches Reuben Ramas CAÑETE Associate Professor, Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman Abstract This is a preliminary study on the iconography, spatial distribution, and stylistic pattern of church ceiling painting based on case studies of five colonial-era Southeastern Cebu churches, done during the early decades of the 20th century. Each display comprehensive ceiling decoration programs executed by various Cebu-based painters, three of whom have dominated the available literature: Canuto Avila (Carcar and Dalaguete), Raymundo Francia (Sibonga and Argao), and Miguel Villareal (Boljoon). Utilizing concepts in iconography and visual culture, these ceiling paintings are analyzed and evaluated based on an understanding of Catholic catechism and the role that the church’s interiors played in the teachings of Church doctrine. There is also a need to explicate a preliminary realization of the conditions and contexts of artistic production and reception of these paintings, a process that was determined by each parish’s capacity to imagine, fund, and execute these elaborate visual decoration schemes. The paintings are integrated into a complex system of parochial art patronage, in which empowered parishioners, ambitious parish priests, and a visually literate public interact and intersect their common ideological and political aesthetic interests to fulfill a commonly felt, but differently interpreted project: to ennoble the town’s chief religious space with their expression of faith and secular power, as well as their indexical assertion of social and economic ascendancy during the American Colonial Period. Mendoza2 and Leonila Adarna1* 1 Chemistry Department, University of San Carlos, Cebu City 2 Department of Mathematics and Sciences, German University of Technology in Oman, Muscat, Oman Pesticides pose a threat to the environment and eventually human health. Extent of contamination of pesticides can be determined and monitored by analysis of pesticide residue in surface water, sediments, soil, and biota. Samples were collected from Manlapay, Barangay Mantalongon in Dalaguete, reportedly the vegetable basket of Cebu, from October to November 2013. Concentration of the pesticide deltamethrin was determined by Gas Chromatography-Electron Capture Detector along with organic matter content (OM), potassium (K) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) using standard methods of analysis. Data showed that deltamethrin was found to be present in soil and cabbage and beyond detection limit in water. Inverse relationship was found between residue in cabbage and in soil confirming pesticide leaching as supported by rainfall data. Organic matter and cation exchange capacity in soil showed significant correlation to detected deltamethrin residue confirming that pyrethroids are strongly bound to organic matter and free exchangeable potassium ions. Deltamethrin residue in water does not show any correlation to any other parameters as it is beyond detection limit, probably due to volatilization and photodegradation of deltamethrin in water.
