The vision of the National Gallery is the cultural enrichment of all Australians through access to their national art gallery, the quality of the national collection, the exceptional displays, exhibitions and programs, and the professionalism of Gallery staff. Led by a Chairman appointed by the Governor-General, the governing body, the Council of the National Gallery of Australia, has expertise in the arts, corporate governance, administration and financial and business management. In 2004–2005 the National Gallery received an Australian Government appropriation of $41.660 million, raised $10.517 million privately, and employed 232 full-time equivalent staff. © National Gallery of Australia 2005 ISSN 1323 5192 All rights reserved. Hamacher Nura Gili Centre for Indigenous Programs, University of New South Wales, Sydney, NSW, 2052, Australia Email: [email protected] Of the hundreds of distinct Aboriginal cultures of Australia, many have oral traditions rich in descriptions and explanations of comets, meteors, meteorites, airbursts, impact events, and impact craters. These views generally attribute these phenomena to spirits, death, and bad omens. There are also many traditions that describe the formation of meteorite craters as well as impact events that are not known to Western science. Comets Bright comets appear in the sky roughly once every five years. These celestial visitors were commonly seen as harbingers of death and disease by Aboriginal cultures of Australia. In an ordered and predictable cosmos, rare transient events were typically viewed negatively – a view shared by most cultures of the world (Hamacher & Norris, 2011). In some cases, the appearance of a comet would coincide with a battle, a disease outbreak, or a drought. The comet was then seen as the cause and attributed to the deeds of evil spirits. The Tanganekald people of South Australia (SA) believed comets were omens of sickness and death and were met with great fear. The Gunditjmara people of western Victoria (VIC) similarly believed the comet to be an omen that many people would die. In communities near Townsville, Queensland (QLD), comets represented the spirits of the dead returning home.

    4 JANUARY – 22 MARCH 2020 Margaret's Gift acknowledges and celebrates the generous legacy of Margaret Olley AC (1923-2011). Olley was a preeminent artist who had more than 90 solo exhibitions during her lifetime. Using funds from her own exhibition sales Olley would purchase fellow artists works, which she would then in turn donate to numerous galleries. She was also an entrepreneur who invested wisely in residential properties, that in turn brought in a steady income. This put her in a unique position in which she could, not only focus on her own artistic practice but she had the time and means to paint, travel, acquire and donate. The working relationships and life-long friendships she developed with gallery curators, directors and fellow artists are testament to her unwavering support of art and culture within this country. Throughout her lifetime, Olley continued to donate and provide funds to various institutions. This approach enabled institutions to acquire significant works of art. Many of these works are now considered collection highlights, spanning national, state, regional and university art collections. The Margaret Olley Art Trust was established in 1990. This legacy continues today, with the ongoing support of the trustees of the Margaret Olley Art Trust, through both donation of work or funds allocated to a specific project. This exhibition is the second in a series of three that has the generous support of the Margaret Olley Art Trust. Curated by Renée Porter, the exhibition presents over 60 works from collections in Queensland, New South Wales and the ACT and include works by European masters, Australian artists and ceramics from Papua New Guinea which were her earliest known gifts.

    ROBERT BOYNES Robert Boynes is a consummate master of both technique and observation. Consisting largely of studies of the human figure located within unspecified urban environments, his work focuses on the anonymity of much contemporary social interaction. A series of dots on a wall in Fremantle was the catalyst for recent works as he continues to explore the sounds, codes and cultural bonds found in our shared spaces and streetscapes. Rather than taking a moral perspective on this condition, Robert consciously maintains a critical distance from his subjects. As a result, his images incorporate a multiplicity of references to cinema, televised news coverage and closed circuit TV footage. Robert transposes this raw material into exhilarating paintings which remind us that modernity is an amalgam of the impersonal and the intimate. Images are screened onto the surface of the canvas before acrylic paint is applied and washed back, revealing hidden forms and colours. These paintings stay with us as flashes of memory, like rapid bursts of light that resonate after the eyes are closed.
