Back to Top Page 9 Florida-bred Weekend Recap Perfect Records Remain for J P’s Delight and Jackson With FSS Scores BY BROCK SHERIDAN______OLDSMAR, FL—J P’s Delight remained undefeated in three career starts while Jackson kept his record at Tampa Bay Downs unblemished as the two Florida-breds won their respective divi- sions of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Florida Sire Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs Saturday. J P’s Delight won the $125,000 FTBOA FSS City of Ocala for 3-year-old Florida-bred fillies sired by FTBOA-registered stal- lions and having paid all FSS eligibility fees going seven furlongs. Jackson won his second FSS race when taking the $125,000 FTBOA FSS Marion County against Florida-bred 3-year-olds under the same conditions and distance. Last year in May, Jackson won the FTBOA FSS Silver Charm Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs by more than nine lengths while setting the track record for a J P’s Delight is mile-and-70-yards in 1:38.86. J P’s Delight began her career in July with a nine-and-a-quar- ter-length win over $35,000 maiden claimers going six furlongs at Gulfstream Park. She was then given a short break of just more than 60 days before returning to win a first level allowance race at Florida-bred J P’s Delight/SV PHOTOGRAPHY Gulfstream Park West by more than six lengths on Oct. 11. Ridden for the first time in the FTBOA City of Ocala by Jairo Rendon, J P’s Delight broke well from post five as the 2-1 second choice behind odds-on favorite Wildwood’s Beauty, who had just won the $75,000 Millions Distaff Preview Stakes against fellow Florida-breds at Gulfstream Park West on Nov. 9. J P’s Delight was quickly challenged from the inside by 9-1 third choice R Prerogative and longshot Moon Eyes on the rail. Despite the three-horse battle for the lead, the trio went a con- trolled first-quarter mile in :22.91. However, J P’s Delight began to separate from her rivals in the turn with Bimini, R Prerogative and Wildwood’s Beauty giving chase while racing three-abreast and clicking off a :45.96 half-mile fraction. Bimini and Wildwood’s Beauty tried to muster a rally approaching the quarter-mile marker but J P’s Delight was in full flight and pulling away to a two length lead with a furlong to run. J P’s Delight won by nearly three-lengths to the good of Wildwood’sBeauty in second in a time of 1:23.65 on the fast track. R Prerogative was another length back in third followed in order by Bimini, Pippas Poppy and Moon Eyes. “I was happy just to be close the first part of the race,” Rendon said. “At the half-mile pole, I let her go and she took off on her own and just kept going.” J P’s Delight is trained by Kathleen O’Connell for Brent Fernung and Eugene Cahalan, who O’Connell credits for much of the filly’s success. “Some horses are just late maturing.
