    The Superintendent’s Update June 3, 2015 NEWS FROM KELLY While this past year definitely presented challenges, there were also many successes. CUSD continues to provide excellent educational opportunities for our students, and this is never more evident than at this time of the year. Our students are winning awards, graduating, and heading off to all parts of the country to further their education and continue their lives. They are able to do this because of the education and support they received here in Chico. Thank you to each and every CUSD staff member as each of you plays a role in the success of our students—and they are why we are all here. While it is exciting to see our students promote from one grade to the next, and ultimately graduate, it is much harder when it comes to saying goodbye to our colleagues when they make that decision to “graduate” into retirement. We see their happiness, and we want to be happy for them, but still, it is hard to envision not having them with us when we come back and start the new school year. To help those of us they are leaving behind, we ask our retirees to find some time occasionally to come by and say hello as they will be missed. Please join me in congratulating the following CUSD staff members who have either retired during the 2014-2015 school year or who have submitted their intent to retire at the end of this school year. They have my sincere appreciation for their years of dedication to education and I wish them all health and happiness in their retirement.

D'Amore on Monday, April 14, 2014 The 1980s is its own “golden age” of film when considering the idea/ls of gender contained within its borders. The era indulged representations of high-testosterone masculinity (such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Bruce Willis) and vulnerable femininity (such as Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy). And, while films of the decade were also capable of imagining men who were strong and sensitive (like Eric Stoltz in Some Kind of Wonderful, Rob Lowe in About Last Night, and Judd Nelson in The Breakfast Club), there were far fewer roles for women that broke from stereotypically feminized characterizations (like Linda Hamilton inTerminator , Lea Thompson in Back to the Future, and Demi Moore in St. Elmo’s Fire). What can an examination of gender roles in the films of the 1980s tell us about a decade that was fraught with a crisis of identity, simultaneously proud and insecure The( Outsiders, Dirty Dancing, Less Than Zero), strong and vulnerable (War Games, Red Dawn) real and imagined (Robocop, Predator)? How might we interrogate gender in American films of the 1980s, in order to better understand the ironies and anxieties contained within them? The 1987 romantic drama Dirty Dancing made for just $6 million, went on to gross $214 million worldwide and was the first film to sell over 1 million copies on video. Last week, I auscultated an adult for the first time since I graduated from medical school in 2007. It was awkward, and eerily reminiscent of that scene in the 1987 film " Dirty Dancing" where Patrick Swayze is trying to teach Jennifer Grey how to feel the rhythm of her heart beat (minus Jennifer's white Keds ® and Patrick's hair). I was attending in the newborn nursery, and we were evaluating one of the neonates for an arrhythmia. When the mother had come in for a scheduled Cesarean section and they had placed the baby on monitors, they had detected an irregular tachycardic fetal heartbeat. After delivery, and after lab work, an echocardiogram, an EKG, and 24-hour Holter monitoring, we had diagnosed the infant with a ventricular tachycardia. We were preparing to discharge the infant home with a very scared set of parents, with instructions from the pediatric cardiology team to check the baby's heart rate twice a day. I was trying to teach the father how to auscultate and count the baby's heart rate, and as the infant's heartbeat was so irregular and fast, I thought it would be easier to teach the father first on his own heartbeat. The father and mother were scared and on the verge of tears, worried that if they couldn't figure out how to take their newborn son's heartbeat, the baby might be in serious life-threatening danger.

    Introduction Everything began with the movie Moulin Rouge (2001). Since I was so obsessed with this hit film, I couldn’t but want to know more about this particular genre - musical films. Then I started to trace the history of this genre back to Hollywood’s classical musical films. It’s interesting that musical films have undergone several revivals and are usually regarded as the products of escapism. Watching those protagonists singing and dancing happily, the audience can daydream freely and forget about the cruel reality. What are the aesthetic artifices of this genre so enchanting that it always catches the eye of audience generation after generation? What kinds of ideal life do these musical films try to depict? Do they (musical films) merely escape from reality or, as a matter of fact, implicitly criticize the society? In regard to the musical films produced by Hollywood, what do they reflect the contemporary social, political or economic situations? To investigate these aspects, I start my research project on the Hollywood musical film genre from the 1950s (its Classical Period) to 2002. However, some people might wonder that among all those Hollywood movies, what is so special about the musical films that makes them distinguish from the other types of movies? On the one hand, the musical film genre indeed has several important contributions to the Hollywood industry, and its influence never wanes even until today. In need of specialty for musical film production, many talented professional dancers and singers thus get the chances to join in Hollywood and prove themselves as great actors (actresses), too.
