FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 02/04/18 NFL CELEBRATES TOUCHDOWN CELEBRATIONS IN SUPER BOWL LII COMMERCIAL Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr. Have the Time of Their Lives The NFL will premiere its new TV commercial starring Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr. after the third quarter of Super Bowl LII on Sunday, February 4. While the world is focused on two teams in the big game, the spot sheds light on what the other 30 teams are up to by providing an inside look at one team: the New York Giants. The commercial is set in the Giants practice facility where Manning and Beckham Jr. are practicing passing routes. They ultimately celebrate a touchdown by recreating the iconic dance scene from the 1987 hit movie “Dirty Dancing,” which starred Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, to the theme song “(I've Had) the Time of My Life” sung by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes. Both players are joined on-the-field by their offensive linemen – Brett Jones, John Greco, Chad Wheeler, D.J. Fluker, and John Jerry – who serve as the duo’s backup dancers. Watching from the sideline, safety Landon Collins delivers the memorable line, “Let Them Dance.” Choreographed by Stephanie Klemons from the Tony Award-winning musical, “Hamilton,” the touchdown celebration culminates with Beckham sprinting toward Manning in slow motion as Beckham soars into the air for the perfect cinematic catch, mirroring the movie’s climactic scene. Trademark Rights for Signature Touchdown Dances Abstract Famous athletes are increasingly cultivating signature dances and celebratory moves, such as touchdown dances, as valuable and commercially viable elements of their personal brands. As these personal branding devices have become immediately recognizable and have begun being commercially exploited, athletes need to legally protect their signature dances. This paper argues that trademark law should protect the signature dances and moves of famous athletes, particularly the signature touchdown dances of NFL players. Because touchdown dances are devices capable of distinguishing one player from another, are non- functional, and are commercially used in NFL games, the dances should be registrable with the USPTO as trademarks for football services. D'Amore on Monday, April 14, 2014 The 1980s is its own “golden age” of film when considering the idea/ls of gender contained within its borders. The era indulged representations of high-testosterone masculinity (such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Bruce Willis) and vulnerable femininity (such as Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy). And, while films of the decade were also capable of imagining men who were strong and sensitive (like Eric Stoltz in Some Kind of Wonderful, Rob Lowe in About Last Night, and Judd Nelson in The Breakfast Club), there were far fewer roles for women that broke from stereotypically feminized characterizations (like Linda Hamilton inTerminator , Lea Thompson in Back to the Future, and Demi Moore in St. Elmo’s Fire). What can an examination of gender roles in the films of the 1980s tell us about a decade that was fraught with a crisis of identity, simultaneously proud and insecure The( Outsiders, Dirty Dancing, Less Than Zero), strong and vulnerable (War Games, Red Dawn) real and imagined (Robocop, Predator)? Last week, I auscultated an adult for the first time since I graduated from medical school in 2007. It was awkward, and eerily reminiscent of that scene in the 1987 film " Dirty Dancing" where Patrick Swayze is trying to teach Jennifer Grey how to feel the rhythm of her heart beat (minus Jennifer's white Keds ® and Patrick's hair). I was attending in the newborn nursery, and we were evaluating one of the neonates for an arrhythmia. When the mother had come in for a scheduled Cesarean section and they had placed the baby on monitors, they had detected an irregular tachycardic fetal heartbeat. After delivery, and after lab work, an echocardiogram, an EKG, and 24-hour Holter monitoring, we had diagnosed the infant with a ventricular tachycardia. We were preparing to discharge the infant home with a very scared set of parents, with instructions from the pediatric cardiology team to check the baby's heart rate twice a day. I was trying to teach the father how to auscultate and count the baby's heart rate, and as the infant's heartbeat was so irregular and fast, I thought it would be easier to teach the father first on his own heartbeat. The father and mother were scared and on the verge of tears, worried that if they couldn't figure out how to take their newborn son's heartbeat, the baby might be in serious life-threatening danger.
