This amazing evergreen shrub has a thing for stiff breezes and salt-laden ocean air. Called “Kapuka” by the Maori, Griselinia has alternate, smooth-edged, glossy, oval leaves and short flower panicles that bear up to 100 tiny, yellow-flower sepals, but no petals. Berries are small, dark purple and edible but bitter – best leave them for the birds. Likes well-drained soil.
