As you ride up north you will visit the natural formations of rocks that have been created by the corrosion of the ground through the years and are known with the names “Bouharia” The Bouharia resemble chimneys, as is evident by their name (“bouhari” means chimney in the local dialect). We will then cross the Servia bridge one of the longest bridges in Greece, with a length of 1,372 meters before reaching the birthplace of Alexander the Great in the prefecture of Pella where lies a place of intense beauty. Imagine being in a pool amidst the forest with running waterfalls surrounding you. The warm water will relax you and the cold waterfalls will refresh you in a serene and sensational natural setting. The Pozar baths are located at the foot of Kaimaktsalan one of the most famous ski resort mountains in Northern Greece. The capital of Pella, Edessa, is called the city of waters due to its 7 waterfalls! The biggest and most impressive drops 70m among plane trees. A visit will amaze you and a short walk in the town’s alleys will mesmerize you. Nymfaio is one of the most picturesque traditional settlements of Europe according to UNESCO at an altitude of 1.350 m. Its architecture, stone built houses and paths coupled with a sublime forest make it a wonderful destination. Let’s not forget the bear sanctuary called Arcturos that is located very near to the village. Ex-captive bears live in a fenced area imitating a natural habitat. Volunteers are working hard so that the bears can be reintegrated in their natural habitat. As you decent south you will visit the town of Naousa with the wonderful park of Agios Nikolaos. You will relax in the scenic park and enjoy a cold beverage before reaching the Monastery of Theotokos Kallipetras on the shores of Aliakmonas River. The route will surely astound you and the scenery will mesmerize you. Finally we will visit the birthplace of Alexander the Great in Vergina. Vergina is best known as the site of ancient Aegae, the first capital of Macedonia. The excavation of 1976, unearthed burial sites of many kings of Macedon, including the tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. The archaeological museum of Vergina was built to house all the artifacts found at the site and is one of the most important museums in Greece.     XII. The Statistical Battle for the Population of Greek Macedonia by Iakovos D. Michailidis Most of the reports on Greece published by international organisations in the early 1990s spoke of the existence of 200,000 “Macedonians” in the northern part of the country. This “reasonable number”, in the words of the Greek section of the Minority Rights Group, heightened the confusion regarding the Macedonian Question and fuelled insecurity in Greece’s northern provinces.1 This in itself would be of minor importance if the authors of these reports had not insisted on citing statistics from the turn of the century to prove their points: mustering historical ethnological arguments inevitably strengthened the force of their own case and excited the interest of the historians. Tak- ing these reports as its starting-point, this present study will attempt an historical retrospective of the historiography of the early years of the century and a scientific tour d’horizon of the statistics – Greek, Slav and Western European – of that period, and thus endeavour to assess the accuracy of the arguments drawn from them. For Greece, the first three decades of the 20th century were a long period of tur- moil and change. Greek Macedonia at the end of the 1920s presented a totally different picture to that of the immediate post-Liberation period, just after the Balkan Wars. This was due on the one hand to the profound economic and social changes that followed its incorporation into Greece and on the other to the continual and extensive population shifts that marked that period. As has been noted, no fewer than 17 major population movements took place in Macedonia between 1913 and 1925.2 Of these, the most sig- nificant were the Greek-Bulgarian and the Greek-Turkish exchanges of population under the terms, respectively, of the 1919 Treaty of Neuilly and the 1923 Lausanne Convention.

Due to the development of technology and the improvement of the standards of living it has taken global dimensions. As a result tourism has developed into a pure industry, leading the economy and society in local, regional, national and global level towards important changes. Based on the quality and the value of the natural and cultural heritage, as well as on the growth of the level of the given services, tourism developed several alternative types. An alternative type of tourism is agro-ecotourism, which went through an enormous rise and demand. The change of consumer’s behavior and tourist’s consideration of the environment has led organizations that take actions in that sector, into the adoption of high level of standards in all aspects of the generative procedure. The main reason for this continual improvement of the service level and the quality of the given services, as well as the clamp-down for the protection of the environment, was the reason that sustainable tourist growth became a strategic aim. The quality and the practices that ensure sustainability are a continuous procedure which is accomplished by the implementation of quality systems, aiming to achieve the Total Quality. Companies that comply with the specific standards receive quality marks, which conform to this kind of favor that will remain to the consumer’s consciousness. In that perspective, the aim of the research was to examine whether agro-ecotouristic enterprises are certified for the given services, for the protection of the consumers/ tourists, as well as for the protection of the environment.

The Yugoslavs’ immediate purpose in founding SNOF was to inculcate a Slavo- Macedonian national consciousness in the Slavophones of Greek Macedonia and to enlist the Slavophones of Greek Macedonia into the resistance movement in Yugoslav Macedonia; while their indirect aim was to promote Yugoslavia's views on the Macedonian Question. The KKE had recognised the Slavophones as a "SlavoMacedonian nation" since 1934, in accordance with the relevant decision by the Comintern, and since 1935 had been demanding full equality for the minorities within the Greek state; and it now acquiesced to the founding of SNOF in the belief that this would draw into the resistance those Slavophones who had been led astray by Bulgarian Fascist propaganda. However, the Central Committee of the Greek National Liberation Front (EAM) had not approved the founding of SNOF, believing that the new organisation would conduce more to the fragmentation than to the unity of the resistance forces.

The long-term planning for the gentle development of an abandoned mountain village, and possibly the need for additional institutional measures must be taken into account in order to achieve the over time substantial improvement in the region. The identification and assessment of factors affecting the sustainable management is achieved through a primary survey for measuring the dimensions of sustainable development in the village of Nymfaio region, such as the economic, social and environmental sustainability. According to these directions, the community of Nymfaio, situated in the Prefecture of Florina, is recommended and analyzed as an example within the framework of management of mountainous areas. The globalization of the financial activity challenges the adaptability of regional economies and the ability to make the most of, or at least to maintain their comparative advantages. Despite the effort, as far as political selections are concerned, the gap between the regions becomes larger and the costs for the maintenance of their cohesion are rising. In the meantime, technological changes, wide markets and an increasing demand for knowledge, offer new opportunities for a local and regional development in general. However, human resources remain the main factor for the improvement and also for the promotion of the local environment.
