ACTA UNIVERSITATIS UPSALIENSIS Studia Iranica Upsaliensia 28 Traces of Time The Image of the Islamic Revolution, the Hero and Martyrdom in Persian Novels Written in Iran and in Exile Behrooz Sheyda ABSTRACT Sheyda, B. 2016. Traces of Time. The Image of the Islamic Revolution, the Hero and Martyrdom in Persian Novels Written in Iran and in Exile. Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis. Studia Iranica Upsaliensia 28. 196 pp. Uppsala. ISBN 978-91-554-9577-0 The present study explores the image of the Islamic Revolution, the concept of the hero, and the concept of martyrdom as depicted in ten post-Revolutionary Persian novels written and published in Iran compared with ten post-Revolutionary Persian novels written and published in exile. The method is based on a comparative analysis of these two categories of novels. Roland Barthes’s structuralism will be used as the theoretical tool for the analysis of the novels. The comparative analysis of the two groups of novels will be carried out within the framework of Foucault’s theory of discourse. Since its emergence, the Persian novel has been a scene for the dialogue between the five main discourses in the history of Iran since the Constitutional Revolution; this dialogue, in turn, has taken place within the larger framework of the dialogue between modernity and traditionalism. The main conclusion to be drawn from the present study is that the establishment of the Islamic Republic has merely altered the makeup of the scene, while the primary dialogue between modernity and traditionalism continues unabated. This dialogue can be heard in the way the Islamic Republic, the hero, and martyrdom are portrayed in the twenty post-Revolutionary novels in this study.

  • Breaking Down Borders and Bridging Barriers: Iranian Taziyeh Theatre
Breaking Down Borders and Bridging Barriers: Iranian Taziyeh Theatre Khosrow Shahriari A thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Media, Film and Theatre University of New South Wales July 2006 ABSTRACT In the twentieth century, Western theatre practitioners, aware of the gap between actor and spectator and the barrier between the stage and the auditorium, experimented with ways to bridge this gap and cross barriers, which in the western theatrical tradition have been ignored over the centuries. Stanislavski, Meyerhold, Piscator, Brecht, Grotowski, and more recently Peter Brook are only a few of the figures who tried to engage spectators and enable them to participate more fully in the play. Yet in Iran there has existed for over three centuries a form of theatre which, thanks to its unique method of approaching reality, creates precise moments in which the worlds of the actor and the spectator come together in perfect unity. It is called ‘taziyeh’, and the aim of this thesis is to offer a comprehensive account of this complex and sophisticated theatre. The thesis examines taziyeh through the accounts of eyewitnesses, and explores taziyeh’s method of acting, its form, concepts, the aims of each performance, its sources and origins, and the evolution of this Iranian phenomenon from its emergence in the tenth century. Developed from the philosophical point of view of Iranian mysticism on the one hand, and annual mourning ceremonies with ancient roots on the other, taziyeh has been performed by hundreds of different professional groups for more than three hundred years.

Although it is not part of the original Arabic text of The Book of One Thousand and One Nights (The Arabian Nights), it is one of the most famous stories associated with the collection. It was actually added by French player Antoine Galland, who obtained the story from Maronite Christian storyteller Hanna Diyab. [1] Sources known along with Ali Baba as one of the orphan stories, the story is not part of the original Nights collection and has no authentic Arabic textual source, but is included in the book Les mille et une nuits by his French translator, Antoine Galland. [2] John Payne cited parts of Galland's unpublished diary: recording Galland's encounter with a Maronite storyteller from Aleppo, Hanna Diyab. [1] According to Galland's diary, he met Hanna, who had traveled from Aleppo to Paris with renowned French tourist Paul Lucas, on March 25, 1709. Galland's diary further reports that his transcription of Aladdin for publication occurred in the winter of 1709–10.

  • Metamorphoses of Scheherazade in Literature and Film
Metamorphoses of Scheherazade in literature and film - School of Oriental and African Studies The world has been fascinated with The Thousand and One Nights since Antoine Galland discovered it and translated it into French in the early eighteenth century (1704–1717). It has been an infinite source of inspiration both within and outside the cultures that produced it. In fact, the Nights' influence has been so pervasive in the arts over the last three centuries that, according to Robert Irwin,1 it is easier to name those who have not been influenced than those who have. Its narrative techniques are constantly emulated, its stories adapted and retold, miniatures are created to illustrate the luxurious editions of the book, music is composed in honour of Scheherazade,2 and films based on scripts adapted from its stories are made. The immense popularity of the Nights has led to increasing critical attention to interpretations of the stories and of their reincarnations in modern fiction and film, as well as an obsessive search for the authoritative ‘authentic’ text. Criticism of the Nights has thus far been disparate, coming from various disciplines and subjects; each defined by its own priorities, concerns and critical tools. Research in the field of Arabic literature, for example, has focused on the ‘origin’, the ‘original text’3 and ‘influence’ on4 and by5 the Nights. Re-writings of the Nights stories in contem- porary Arabic fiction have in the main been interpreted as political allegory subversive of the current Arab political and cultural institutions. Adaptations of similar stories in ‘Western’ fiction and film tend to be discussed as part of the development of fiction writing or film-making in Europe or America.
