If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!” —Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass In the second half of the nineteenth century artesian wells tapped into ground- water, ending centuries of water scarcity and greatly expanding access to baths in Mexico City. The individualized immersion bath (placer) once offered to wealthier, more European clients was now available to almost everybody. Many of the down- town bathhouses that served humble city dwellers shuttered their temazcales and replaced them with low-cost wooden placeres grouped together in a shared room.1 These humble bathhouses charged for each bucket of hot water, but usually pro- vided all the cold water a client wished, and they used much more water for their wooden placeres than they had for the temazcales that preceded them. At the same time as the placer was being adopted by the masses in the old bathhouses of the city center, new and exclusive bathing facilities were sprouting up on the western side of the city along the Paseo de la Reforma that offered both social and individ- ual contacts with great volumes of water in a variety of forms including swimming pools, tubs, steam rooms, and showers.2 Bathers in both new and old bathhouses luxuriated in an unprecedented hydraulic opulence provided by seemingly unlim- ited groundwater from artesian wells. -

The culture of the Good Death in seventeenth- century Mexico City shows that their Mexican Catholicism represented a localized religious practice that was completely hispanicized. Death permeated Mexico City’s population base due to cyclical pandemics, seasonal natural disasters, such as inundations, agricultural crises, and the common public health issues concerning garbage in the city’s canals and streets. Most of Mexico City’s subjects often lived short and harsh lives. According to colonial citizens, the beliefs and practices of the Good Death signified the partaking of final sacraments and a courage in facing the end of life where the dying person ultimately liberated his/her soul into the purgatorial afterworld. -

The main purpose of this report is to disseminate a set of photographs that constitute part of the primary documentation of epi-Olmec monuments, with particular emphasis on those bearing epi-Olmec texts, and of a few monuments from a tradition that we suspect replaced it at Cerro de las Mesas. It does not include objects that are well-published elsewhere, nor does it include two objects to which we have been unable to gain access to. Its first aim is to marry a trustworthy photographic record and the web presence of FAMSI for the purpose of making widely available a large percentage of the corpus of monuments belonging to this cultural tradition. -

Capítulo 9. Patrimonio y transformaciones urbanas en la Ciudad de México Luis Alberto Salinas Arreortua Instituto de Geografía, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Introducción Las transformaciones económicas y sociales que presentan distintas zonas de la Ciudad de México se pueden interpretar a partir de procesos vinculados a políti- cas neoliberales implementadas desde la década de los ochenta del siglo XX. Algu- nas de las políticas neoliberales se ven plasmadas en los programas de desarrollo urbano (Salinas, 2013a) así como en la implementación de programas parciales tales como: Proyecto Santa Fe, Proyecto Alameda, Rescate del Centro Histórico, entre otros, los cuales, en su momento, pretendían posicionar a la Ciudad de Mé- xico en el marco del Tratado de Libre Comercio (Delgadillo, 2009:80). Con la implementación de estos programas, y también al margen de ellos, se crean las condiciones necesarias para estimular la inversión económica, siendo uno de los elementos a destacar el patrimonio urbano. En torno al patrimonio, se conforman discursos que asocian la necesidad de inversión pública y privada para conservar el patrimonio artístico e histórico,69 además de revitalizar económica- mente los espacios intervenidos, conformando espacios destinados al turismo y a un sector de población de altos ingresos. Sin embargo, junto a las intervenciones “legitimadas” bajo el argumento de la conservación del patrimonio, también se producen procesos de transformación urbana, afectando fuertemente el patri- monio artístico e histórico, en donde el discurso del patrimonio no tiene cabida ante la voracidad del capital privado, en particular del sector inmobiliario. Ante este escenario, se presenta el caso de la colonia Condesa en el área central de 69 En México se considera patrimonio histórico a todos aquellos inmuebles surgidos hasta el siglo XIX, cuya protección y conservación corresponde al Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH). -
