Peterson 1 HBO Series Girls and Insecure’s Depiction of Race and Gender Kimberley Peterson Peterson 2 Communication Studies Dr. Aditi Paul Communication Studies 3 May 2018 and 22 May 2018 Abstract In this research study the identification and representation of race and gender were looked at in the primetime HBO television series Insecure and Girls. The characters that were analyzed in two episodes were the young black women of Insecure and in two episodes the young white women in Girls. The method for this study was conducted using content analysis to identify the following variables focusing on identity, racial stereotypes and names used to address one another. Additionally, variables to identify gender included emotional approaches to situations, stereotypes and gender role expectations. The comprehensive findings revealed through similarities and differences of the episodes containing similar plot lines, as well as the overall analysis of each show, gave insight on how race and gender is being presented. -
Moving Towards a Black Woman's Pedagogy of Humor
HORHN, ERICA-BRITTANY M., Ph.D. Sassy Subversions, Knowing Glances, and Black Women’s Laughter: Moving Towards a Black Woman’s Pedagogy of Humor. (2020) Directed by Dr. Leila Villaverde. 218 pp. Sassy subversions, knowing glances, and Black women’s laughter is a qualitative study that examines the nuances of Black women’s humor away from the comedic stage. Additionally, it provides an alternative approach to understanding Black women’s lived experiences. More specifically, it explores the pedagogical proprieties of Black women’s humor suggesting that the everyday Black woman has the potential to be a public intellectual. Through a Black feminist lens, this research analyzes Issa Rae’s HBO series Insecure and uses focus groups to further investigate how Black women use and understand humor. Evidence from this study suggests that some Black women intentionally and unintentionally use humor to critique and alleviate oppressive conditions created by racism and sexism. Black women also use humor to reinforce communal ties through coded language and communicative patterns. As a result, this study builds the foundation for a Black women’s pedagogy of humor that positions humor as a method of survival while sustaining and celebrating cultural connections. Within this pedagogy, Black women’s humor is both an object of study and a set of tools for Black women to strategically use their humor. ABSTRACT: Utilizing a mixed methods approach using quantitative content analysis and rhetorical criticism, I examine Issa Rae's web series The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl and its presence online as a performance of unruliness. The themes of satire, awkwardness, and platform inform my analysis of the series and the conversations that surround it. After a review of the historical, mediated representations of race in the U.S., I argue that Rae navigates constraints on her voice through Crunk Feminism and as an unruly woman. She offers indirect critique of oppressive structures through satire and the performance of awkwardness. Online platforms, like YouTube, contribute to her capability to enact this critique. To this end, I examine not only Rae’s performances in ABG, but also I conduct quantitative content analysis of ABG’s YouTube comments. In this analysis, I focus on expressions of identity, representation, and community. Ultimately, I posit the satirical wielding of awkwardness as a unique educational tactic, which creates space to interrogate stereotypical representations of Black womanhood. -

HBO Max to Launch in May 2020
HBO Max to Launch in May 2020 10.29.2019 HBO Max will launch in May 2020 at a price point of $14.99, WarnerMedia said at its investor day presentation on Tuesday. Current HBO subscribers will be migrated to the new service. The service is aiming to have 50 million domestic subscribers by the end of 2025 and 75 to 90 million global subscribers-including domestic-by that same date. HBO Max also expects to launch an ad-supported service (AVOD) in 2021. HBO Max does not plan to drop full seasons of series at once as Netflix pioneered when it launched House of Cards in 2013. Instead, it will stick with HBO's successful formula of airing just one episode per week. The heart of the service is HBO, which has such shows on the air as Succession, Barry, The Righteous Gemstones and Westworld. Many more are coming, including dramedy Run from Phoebe Waller-Bridge starring Waller-Bridge, Merritt Weaver and Domhnall Gleason; The Outsider based on the Stephen King novel and produced and directed by Jason Bateman; The Undoing from Nicole Kidman and David E. Kelley and starring Kidman, Hugh Grant and Donald Sutherland; and Lovecraft Country from Jordan Peele's Monkeypaw Productions and J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot. Overall, the service has 38 new and returning series lined up for 2020 and another 50 for 2021, said Casey Bloys, HBO's president of programming. In 2021, HBO has such series coming as Julian Fellowes' The Gilded Age; Joss Whedon's The Nevers; and Mare of Easttown, executive produced by starring multiple Oscar winner Kate Winslet. -

It responds to claims that ‘Awkward black girls are finally having their moment on TV’ (Modhin, 2017: n.p.), in addition to calls for studies of ‘the colour’ (Walser, 2015) of postfeminism, which ‘expand the notion beyond a focus upon young, white, middle-class, heterosexual western women’ (Gill, 2017: 609–610). -
