A good deal of time and effort went into the move to our new premises in Buckley Street. We are now well settled in the new rooms and able to display items from our collection which had previously been kept in storage due to lack of space. Members have participated in the planning and development of Legacy Place and the unveiling of a bust in honour of Sir Stanley Savige, and also in the development and enhancement of the facilities at the Town Common. We have also enjoyed visits to other local history Societies and have been part of the Latrobe Combined History Group and the Gippsland Association of Affiliated Historical Societies. At our Annual Dinner in October guests Dianne and Graham Goulding gave us a fascinating “The Post” account of their experiences while teaching in Derham’s Hill (final) p. 2 China, and we were pleased to co-host, with Changing face of Morwell p. 4 Traralgon Historical Society, a visit by the Starling Shoot 1929 p. 5 National Trust Photographic Committee. Alpine National Park ‐ around Heyfield, Licola and Dargo Visitor Guide The Alpine National Park stretches from central Gippsland all the way to the New South Wales border where it adjoins Kosciuszko National Park. In this south‐western section of the park you will find pleasant Snow Gum woodlands, sprawling mountain vistas, spectacular rivers and gorges, as well as rich cultural heritage ‐ from the rock scatters of the Gunaikurnai people on lofty vantage points, to grazier’s huts nestling in protected folds of the high country. Hut is a further 3 km though groves of snow gums. Built in 1940, the Getting there hut is an excellent example of bush architecture. Continue 1 km This area of the Alpine National Park is situated approximately 250‐ south east from the hut to the carpark. 320 km east of Melbourne. To get to Heyfield take Princes Highway to Traralgon, then take Traralgon‐Maffra Road. Latrobe River Basin January 2014 Introduction Southern Rural Water is the water corporation responsible for administering and enforcing the Latrobe River Basin Local Management Plan. The purpose of the Latrobe River Basin Local Management Plan is to: • document the management objectives for the system • explain to licence holders (and the broader community) the specific management objectives and arrangements for their water resource and the rules that apply to them as users of that resource • clarify water sharing arrangements for all users and the environment, including environmental flow requirements • document any limits, including water use caps, permissible consumptive volumes or extraction limits that apply to the system. Management objectives The objective of the Local Management Plan is to ensure the equitable sharing of water between users and the environment and the long-term sustainability of the resource. 26th August 2020 National Water Reform 2020 Productivity Commission Lodgement online at [email protected] Dear Commissioners RE: National Water Reform Inquiry - Submission from Friends of Latrobe Water Friends of Latrobe Water (FLoW) welcomes this opportunity to provide input to the Productivity Commission to assist with its review of National Water Reform. FLoW advocates for the protection of Latrobe Valley’s water sources and safeguarding the protection of the Gippsland Lakes from industry activities, including coal mine rehabilitation and coal ash contamination. Threats include – • Declining water flows • Changes in flows • Overallocation of water sources • Priority sharing of water resources In consideration of the Commission’s 2017 recommendations that jurisdictions recommit to a renewed NWI, FLoW has concerns with, • policy settings for alternative water sources in entitlement and planning frameworks • other policy settings relating to: – urban water management – environmental water management – decision-making on building and supporting new infrastructure. In context to the regional area of Gippsland in Victoria, alignment of water policy on a statewide basis is challenging due to the dominance and current governance of mining in the Latrobe Valley in Gippsland’s central west. This has resulted in substantial impacts to water flow, quality and chemistry to all other beneficial users downstream including environmental water health. In responding to the Issues Paper on the scope of this inquiry FLoW will also address, • emerging challenges faced by Governments, water providers and water users, such as climate change or changes in economic circumstances • the interaction of water policy with other areas (such as land use planning and urban development) • the impacts of climate change on water resources • the provision of reliable water services to regional and remote communities • the principles to be satisfied for any Government investment in major water infrastructure. -
