THE GEORGE F. ADDES - UAW SECRETARY-TREASURER COLLECTION Papers, 1936-1953 (Predominantly, 1938-1947) 651/2 linear feet Accession Number 52A L.C. Number MS71-619 The papers of George F. Addes were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in 1963 and 1967 in two installments corresponding to Parts I and 2 of this collection. Part 1 was opened for research in 1964 and Part 2 in 1968. This finding aid was revised in 1980. Included in this collection are some papers dated after 1947 which relate to the tenure of Addes' successor, Emil Mazey. George F. Addes was born August 26, 1910 in Toledo, Ohio and grew up there except for a few years his family spent in Flint, Michigan. He was educated in Catholic schools. Later, after he had become active in the labor movement, he attended Wayne University Law School and took other courses related to his work. From the outset of his employment at the Willys-Overland plant in Toledo Addes was involved in the developing movement to organize automobile workers, and he became secretary-treasurer of the Toledo local. When, in 1936, the UAW severed its AFL affiliation and joined the CIO, Addes was elected secretary-treaurer of the union. He held this post, except for a short interval in 1938, until 1947. He served on the International Executive Board, the CIO Coordinating Committee, the CIO Political Action Committee, and served as a special labor mediator for the National War Labor Board. As secretary-treaurer Addes instituted advanced bookkeeping procedures in an effort to make the UAW completely accountable to its members. He was active as an organizer, strike leader, and speaker, and he played a leading role in the first decade of the UAW's history. He retired from the UAW after his reelection defeat in 1947 and ultimately became a district sales manager for the Ford Motor Company. He is married to the former Victoria Joseph. He is now retired and resides in Detroit, Michigan. George Addes 2 Important subjects covered in the collection are: (See also the subject index at the end of this guide).
