For more information, please contact [email protected]. i Abstract Indigenous engagement in Canadian archaeology encompasses jurisdictional variances, microcosmic colonial/resistance implications and the promise of mutually-beneficial heritage management practices. Drawing from literature commentary, primary document review, surveys and interviews, this dissertation explores consistency and uniqueness in the relationship between commercial archaeology and Indigenous peoples in Canada. Four Conditions of engagement and four Capital properties of engagement emerge and are theorized as constituting a framework capable of considering the diversity of engagement practice in Canada. Conditions include: Regulation, Capacity (Developer and Community) and Relationships. The regulatory heritage regimes governing engagement are considered across provincial/territorial boundaries together with a host of legislation, policy documents, treaty settlements, and other State/Indigenous agreements. The reasons for developers to instigate and maintain Indigenous community engagement components of cultural resource management (CRM) and the infrastructures within communities capable of realizing community-centric heritage management outcomes are defined and explored. The importance of interpersonal and institutional relationships and the identities of participants and proxies in the course of these relationships are emphasized in detail by those involved in archaeological practice. Drawing from Bourdieu’s cultural and social capital marketplaces, the four capitals in this dissertation include: embodied, objectified, collective (social/institutionalized), and economic. Embodied cultural capital represents the skills, knowledge and experiences acquired and transmitted during engagement and as a product of the archaeological process. Objectified cultural capital represents the varyingly ascribed values attached to objects/artifacts and places/sites by archaeologists and Indigenous peoples. Objectified capital also represents the various ways heritage is commodified in commercial/development transactions. Collective capital represents both the social (group/community affiliation) and institutionalized (institutional affiliation/certification) ii capitals. Collectively, these capitals define and perpetuate the proxy roles of engagement participants, emphasizing that Indigenous engagement in archaeology is about more than just the individuals involved. Finally, economic capital represents the tangible monetary component of engagement. Together, these conditions and capitals are defined and combined as Indigenous and critical heritage epistemologies synthesize a fluid interpretative framework considering the dynamics of Indigenous engagement in contemporary archaeology. We had an excellent celebration, packed Twith events. It started early in September with a display at Robarts Library of more than 100 books authored by geography faculty and alumni. The display was seen by thousands of visitors to the library between September and October. We also put on a special departmen- tal speakers series with the theme of “Intersections” between human and physical geography and between geographers and the community. Twenty-two guest speakers participated and we held special panel sessions on the Tar Sands, Climate Change, the Aboriginal City, and Women and Factory Work in China. The biggest event of the year was a full weekend of activities in mid-September. The weekend began early on Thursday, September 16th, when the Planning Alumni Committee hosted its first Fall Plan- ning Mixer at the Duke of York, in honour of Geography’s 75th. On Friday afternoon, renowned climate change scholar Professor Diana Liverman (MA ‘80) from the University of Arizona gave a public lecture on “Governing Climate”. This was followed by an opening reception and book launch for Reflections on the History of Geography at the University of Toronto. On Saturday, there was a faculty panel ses- sion in the morning on the history of the department and a workshop exploring mapping on the web.

    OUR LOGO STORY An artist from each Nation contributed an original salmon design to the unified logo for Bringing the Salmon Home: The Columbia River Salmon Reintroduction Initiative. Our logo was launched with our new website at ColumbiaRiverSalmon.ca on February 16, 2021. DARCY LUKE, KTUNAXA NATION Darcy Luke is a Ktunaxa artist versatile in different mediums. Darcy created a chinook salmon whose design symbolizes the life-giving generational legacy of the salmon. KELSEY JULES, SECWÉPEMC NATION Kelsey Jules is a Secwépemc and Syilx artist, model, and teacher. She is a member of Tk'emlups te Secwepemc. Kelsey’s sockeye salmon design embodies the vital relationship between salmon, land and water. TUNKA CIKALA, SYILX OKANAGAN NATION Tunka Cikala (Spirit Peoples) is a member of the Sinixt and Nespelem bands of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. Spirit’s chinook salmon design is inspired by Syilx captíkwł teachings, illustrating the inseparable connections between salmon and culture. Here, Sen’k’lip (Coyote) with his Eagle staff brings salmon up the river to the people. Bear paw prints represent Skəmixst as well as the spots on the back of chinook salmon. The Syilx Okanagan captíkwł How Food Was Given relates how the Four Food Chiefs – Chief Skəmixst (Black Bear), Chief N’titxw (Chinook Salmon), Chief Spʼiƛ̕əm (Bitter Root), and Chief Siyaʔ (Saskatoon Berry), met the needs of the “People To Be”. 2 YEAR TWO OF OUR JOURNEY Five governments, one visionary agreement Bringing the Salmon Home: The Columbia River Salmon Reintroduction Initiative is the Indigenous-led collaboration of the Syilx Okanagan Nation, Ktunaxa Nation, Secwépemc Nation, Canada and British Columbia.
