Fundamental HTML Fundamental HTML HTML = Hyper Text Markup Language For the hands on portion we use a free program called Kompozer. It can be downloaded at http://www.kompozer.net/download.php Scroll down to the 0.8b3 version English, Windows, and the Installer There is an easy way to get a business website online free. http://www.kansasgetonline.com/ I already have a website up and running. Can I host it, as is, at Intuit Websites? No, only websites created using Intuit Websites SiteBuilder can be hosted at Intuit Websites. This restriction enables us to provide you with the best support and service at the best price. Can I sell things on my website? You can upgrade and add a Shopping Cart to your website so customers can buy multiple products and services from your site with a single payment. If you need a more sophisticated Web Store, we have a number of full- featured ecommerce solutions to choose from; call Intuit at 1-800-428-3170 and they'll be happy to help you pick one. I don't have the time or the desire to build a website. Wait, is that a question? Actually, many people feel the same way, so we formed a design group whose sole job is to build a professional website for you. Call Intuit at 1-800-428-3170 and they'll help you get started. Adobe Dreamweaver is the professional grade program for html creation. It has WYSIWYG and text editing. Notepad++ is a text editor with syntax formatting for many programing languages, html among them. Amaya is the W3C backed open source HTML editor. Komposer - The latest version of Komposer has a split screen view. It has WYSIWYG and text editing. It's free. There is not just one type of HTML, there are actually many: HTML 4.01 Strict, HTML 4.01 Transitional, XHTML 1.0 Strict, and many more. All these types of HTML are defined in their respective W3C specifications, but they are also defined in a machine-readable language specifying the legal structure, elements and attributes of a type of HTML. Such a definition is called a "Document Type Definition", or, for short, DTD. Some tools which process HTML documents might need to know which DTD an (X)HTML document uses: this is why each (X)HTML document needs, at the beginning, a DTD declaration, such as: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> Given its syntax, the DTD declaration is often called, for short, "Doctype". http://www.w3.org/QA/2002/04/valid-dtd-list.html The default starting template from Komposer. <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd"> Define which html we're using. <html> Start html <head> Start the header where document specific information is given. <meta content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1" http-equiv="content-type"> <title></title> The title of your webpage. </head> End the header. <body> Start of the body of the webpage (the stuff you see). <br> </body> End body. </html> End html. Working with a template. From Komposer goto File / Open File and select index.html from the RedTie folder. The home page for every website is index.html. Now we can play with the HTML and CSS to see the effects. Modern web pages use Cascading Style Sheets to define the layout of page elements. Alt + Enter to confirm changes. Web Hosting Purchase a Domain Name: www.whatever.com about $12 a year. Storage and bandwidth about $50 a year. Take a look at www.ipage.com as an example. During sign up you'll purchase a domain name. They will verify availability. You will be assigned a user name, password, and ftp location. Complete ftp instructions should be emailed to you. You'll need a ftp program. Filezilla is an excellent free program http://filezilla-project.org/. Komposer has a ftp client built in. Click on File and select Publish or Publish As from the menu. Complete package with homestead.com an Intuit Company (the QuickBooks people). No HTML needed. Weblint: Just Another Perl Hack Neil Bowers1 Canon Research Centre Europe Abstract Weblint is a utility for checking the syntax and style of HTML pages. It was inspired by lint [15], which performs a similar function for C and C++ programmers. Weblint does not aspire to be a strict SGML validator, but to provide helpful comments for humans. The importance of quality assurance for web sites is introduced, and one particular area, validation of HTML, is described in more detail. The bulk of the paper is devoted to weblint: what it is, how it is used, and the design and implementation of the current development version. 1. Introduction The conclusion opens with a summary of the information and opinions given in this paper. A Web sites are becoming an increasingly critical part of selection of the lessons learned over the last four years how many companies do business. For many companies is given, followed by plans for the future, and related web sites are their business. LEARNING HTML5 AND CSS 1. What is HTML? Ans: HTML has been derived from SGML, which stands for standard general markup language. HTML was created to allow those users who were not specialized in using SGML to create web pages. 2. What are tags in HTML? Ans: An HTML tag begin with a ‘less than’ symbol(<) and ends with a ‘greater than’ symbol(>). These symbols are also called angle brackets. Syntax:<html> text </html> Start tag End tag The part --<html>is called the opening tag, while the part--- </html> is called the closing tag. The closing tag is same as the opening tag except that it has forward slash before its name. 3. What is the difference between the <body>and <head>tags? Ans: The HEAD section contains the title and the other information about the HTML document. The BODY section contains all the information that is displayed on a web page. 4. How are attributes defined? Ans: An attribute provides additional information about an element. Attributes are usually defined its name-value pairs. The name is the property of the tag that you want to set, while the value is the value of the property to be set. <p align = “left”>This text is left aligned </p> The <p> tag, also knows as the paragraph tag, is used to define a paragraph. Now we can use the attribute align with it to set the alignment of the paragraph. Also, there are three possible values of the align attribute—left, right, and center. 5.Define HTML. What is its use? Ans: HTML stands for hypertext markup language.

  • Annotea: an Open RDF Infrastructure for Shared Web Annotations
Proceedings of the WWW 10th International Conference, Hong Kong, May 2001. Annotea: An Open RDF Infrastructure for Shared Web Annotations Jos´eKahan,1 Marja-Riitta Koivunen,2 Eric Prud’Hommeaux2 and Ralph R. Swick2 1 W3C INRIA Rhone-Alpes 2 W3C MIT Laboratory for Computer Science {kahan, marja, eric, swick}@w3.org Abstract. Annotea is a Web-based shared annotation system based on a general-purpose open RDF infrastructure, where annotations are modeled as a class of metadata.Annotations are viewed as statements made by an author about a Web doc- ument. Annotations are external to the documents and can be stored in one or more annotation servers. One of the goals of this project has been to re-use as much existing W3C technol- ogy as possible. We have reacheditmostlybycombining RDF with XPointer, XLink, and HTTP. We have also implemented an instance of our system using the Amaya editor/browser and ageneric RDF database, accessible through an Apache HTTP server. In this implementation, the merging of annotations with documents takes place within the client. The paper presents the overall design of Annotea and describes some of the issues we have faced and how we have solved them. 1Introduction One of the basic milestones in the road to a Semantic Web [22] is the as- sociation of metadata to content. Metadata allows the Web to describe properties about some given content, even if the medium of this content does not directly provide the necessary means to do so. For example, ametadata schema for digital photos [15] allows the Web to describe, among other properties, the camera model used to take a photo, shut- ter speed, date, and location.

For the human brain, sequences like -> , <= or := are single logical tokens, even if they take two or three characters on the screen. Your eye spends a non-zero amount of energy to scan, parse and join multiple characters into a single logical one. Ideally, all programming languages should be designed with full-fledged Unicode symbols for operators, but that’s not the case yet. She believes a proper web designer should be able to develop a website from the ground up; meaning coding HTML, CSS, and JavaScript from scratch before using pretty web design software. :) She feels people tend to skip over the basics and go right to the items they want to implement; however without a strong base, you cannot build anything without it collapsing. ABOUT THE COURSE PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: ● Prerequisite courses: MMC5277 Web Design Principles, VIC5325 Digital Imagery, and VIC5326 Digital Layout. ● Students should have a firm working knowledge of HTML and CSS coding as well as uploading websites via FTP. PURPOSE: This course will expand the basic coding of XHTML and CSS learned in MMC5277. The course will cover three main topics: HTML5 and CSS3, foundations of JavaScript. We will also cover advanced web design using Adobe Dreamweaver.

  • Appendix a the Ten Commandments for Websites
Appendix A The Ten Commandments for Websites Welcome to the appendixes! At this stage in your learning, you should have all the basic skills you require to build a high-quality website with insightful consideration given to aspects such as accessibility, search engine optimization, usability, and all the other concepts that web designers and developers think about on a daily basis. Hopefully with all the different elements covered in this book, you now have a solid understanding as to what goes into building a website (much more than code!). The main thing you should take from this book is that you don’t need to be an expert at everything but ensuring that you take the time to notice what’s out there and deciding what will best help your site are among the most important elements of the process. As you leave this book and go on to updating your website over time and perhaps learning new skills, always remember to be brave, take risks (through trial and error), and never feel that things are getting too hard. If you choose to learn skills that were only briefly mentioned in this book, like scripting, or to get involved in using content management systems and web software, go at a pace that you feel comfortable with. With that in mind, let’s go over the 10 most important messages I would personally recommend. After that, I’ll give you some useful resources like important websites for people learning to create for the Internet and handy software. Advice is something many professional designers and developers give out in spades after learning some harsh lessons from what their own bitter experiences.
