Palabras claves: Lepidoptera, Noctuidae, Identificación, Morfología y Genitalia. v ABSTRACT The present work updates the knowledge of the Noctid Lepidoptera of the Arequipa Countryside, as a result of an enormous work carried out in the winter and spring season, corresponding to the months of July - December 2018. During the development of the experimental work the capture of adults of noctuids was carried out through the use of light traps and captures with the entomological mesh, allowing to know the subsequent identification of the captured adult, by means of identification methods of a lepidoptera proposed by Lamas (2001). A total of 1025 specimens were captured. Having as a result the identification of 14 specimens and 22 at the family level. The most abundant species according to the results, was Agrotis ipsilon, resulting in a total of 71 specimens captured. The least abundant species due to the low presence of specimens studied, was Noctuidae sp 20 with only 6 specimens captured in six months. The area with the highest number of specimens is the Characato district with 212 and the areas with the lowest number of specimens are the district of José Luis Bustamante and Rivero with 0 specimens. A list of the identified species is presented and the description of the identified species is subsequently made. Key words: Lepidoptera, Noctuidae, Identification, Morphology and Genitalia. vi INDICE DEDICATORIA .................................................................................................................................... iii AGRADECIMIENTO ............................................................................................................................ iv RESUMEN ........................................................................................................................................... v ABSTRACT .......................................................................................................................................... vi INDICE .............................................................................................................................................. vii INDICE DE TABLAS ......................................................................................................................... xviii CAPÍTULO I .........................................................................................................................................1 INTRODUCCIÓN ..................................................................................................................................1 1.1. Three experiments, using 150 larvae each, were conducted for the larval stage. In the first, used to assess the duration and survival of all stages, insects were reared individually and fed an artificial diet (Grenee). In the second, individuals were also reared separately, but were fed leaves of 10 plants from different families. In the third, the larvae were not individualised, the food plants were rotated such as to provide three plant species every 48 hours. In the first experiment, the viability of the eggs, larvae, pupae and prepupae was 91.9, 94.7, 32.49 and 43.5%, respectively. The average duration of the egg, larvae, prepupae, pupae and adult were 6.0, 25.3, 25.7, 21.4 and 12.7 days, respectively.

Aiming to understand how Accepted 17 January 2021 the assemblages of Plusiinae are structured by agricultural occupation and climate, this study used automated Available online 24 February 2021 light traps sampled moths in 18 sites in Brazil, across a broad latitudinal gradient. Our data has demonstrated Associate Editor: Thamara Zacca that climate variables prevails as the most important variables influencing both the composition of Plusiinae and the abundance of its dominant species Chrysodeixis includens. On the other hand, the lack of significance found for the effect of variables representing agricultural occupation evidences that pest species are present Keywords: both in agricultural and natural ecosystems, also sharing similar abundances at those locations. In other words, Abundance instead of following a gradient of agricultural occupation (e.g. crop sizes around sample sites) the composition Assemblage structure of these extremely polyphagous insects is more clearly shaped by the latitudinal gradient, in which temperature Looper moths and precipitation are better predictors. Thus, in contrary to our expectations, pest species inhabits both natural Pest species and agricultural landscapes at similar latitudinal sites, probably due to their wide polyphagy spectrum.

  • Aspects of the Field and Developmental Biology of Apanteles Title: Yakutatensis, a Parasitoid of Autographa Californica
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Robert John Mader for the degree of Master of Science in Entomology presented on June 3, 1982 Aspects of the Field and Developmental Biology of Apanteles Title: yakutatensis, a Parasitoid of Autographa californica. Abstract approved: Redacted for Privacy Jeffrey tr. Miller Behavioral and ecological aspects of the field and developmental biology of Apanteles yakutatensis (Ashm.),a primary larval parasite of the alfalfa looper, Autographa californica (Speyer), were investigated in 1980 and 1981. Populations of A. yakutatensis were found incom- mercial peppermint, alfalfa and crimson clover fields involvingtwo areas (Willamette Valley, Great Basin) with very different climatic regimes. Second instar host larvae appeared to be the most commonly attacked stage in the field. There was no relationship between the numbers of host larvae collected in any one sample and theproportion of hosts parasitized in that sample. Thus, in peppermint fields, A. yakutatensis did not appear to respond in a dependentmanner to changes in host density. Requirements for larval development and adult longevitywere investigated in the laboratory. When fed a thirty percent honey water solution, A. yakutatensis females lived anaverage of 18 days and males lived an average 16.5 days. When provided with water only, males and females lived an average of 2.5 days. The larvae of A. yakutatensis required 162 degree days above 10.5°Cto complete develop- ment, and pupae required 85 degree days above 9.4°C. Larvae of A. yakutatensis required 10.5 days to complete development at 26°C and passed through three instars. The first instar was mandibulate, and the other two were hymenopteriform. The age of host attacked hadno significant effect on the time required for developmentof A.

  • Experimental Evidence for Predominant Nocturnal Pollination Despite More Frequent Diurnal Visitation in Abronia Umbellata (Nyctaginaceae)
Journal of Pollination Ecology, 22(7), 2018, pp 67-74 EXPERIMENTAL EVIDENCE FOR PREDOMINANT NOCTURNAL POLLINATION DESPITE MORE FREQUENT DIURNAL VISITATION IN ABRONIA UMBELLATA (NYCTAGINACEAE) Laura A. D. Doubleday*1 and Christopher G. Eckert Department of Biology, Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, K7L 3N6 Canada. 1Current Address: Graduate Programs in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and Entomology, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Massachusetts, 01003 USA. Abstract—Different suites of floral traits are associated with historical selection by particular functional groups of pollinators, but contemporary floral phenotypes are not necessarily good predictors of a plant’s effective pollinators. To determine the extent to which plant species specialize on particular functional groups of pollinators, it is important to quantify visitation rates for the full spectrum of flower visitors as well as to experimentally assess the contributions of each functional group to plant reproduction. We assessed whether attracting both diurnal and nocturnal flower visitors corresponded to pollination generalization or specialization in the Pacific coastal dune endemic Abronia umbellata var. umbellata. In multiple populations over two years, we observed flower visitors during the day and at night to assess visitation rates by different insect groups and conducted pollinator exclusion experiments to assess the contributions of diurnal and nocturnal visitors to seed production. Flower visitation rates were 8.67 times higher during the day than at night, but nocturnal visitation resulted in significantly higher seed set, suggesting that nocturnal noctuid and sphingid moths are the chief pollinators. Most diurnal visitors were honey bees, with tongues too short to reach A. umbellata nectar or contact stigmas and effect pollination.

  • Lepidoptera (Moths and Butterflies) at Inverness Ridge in Central Coastal California and Their Recovery Following a Wildfire
LEPIDOPTERA (MOTHS AND BUTTERFLIES) AT INVERNESS RIDGE IN CENTRAL COASTAL CALIFORNIA AND THEIR RECOVERY FOLLOWING A WILDFIRE J. A. Powell Essig Museum of Entomology, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720 Abstract.— In numbers of species, Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) make up the largest group of plant-feeding animals in North America. Caterpillars of nearly all species feed on plants, and most of them are specialists on one or a few kinds of plants. Therefore they are liable to be severely affected by wildfires, and secondarily, their parasites and predators, including birds, bats, lizards, and rodents, suffer losses of a major food resource. In October 1995, a wildfire swept over part of The Point Reyes National Seashore, burning more than 12,300 acres (5,000 hectares) of public and private land, following a fire-free period of several decades. I tracked survival and recolonization by moths and butterflies during the subsequent five seasons. I made daytime searches for adults and caterpillars approximately monthly from March through October and collected blacklight trap samples, mostly in May and September-October. More than 650 species of Lepidoptera have been recorded in the Inverness Ridge area, and about 375 of them were recorded during the post-fire survey, including larvae of 31% of them. Plants in a Bishop pine forest higher on the ridge, where the fire was most intense, accumulated their caterpillar faunas slowly, while Lepidoptera feeding on plants typical of riparian woods in the lower canyons reestablished sooner and more completely. Recolonization varied markedly among different plant species, and the species richness gradually increased, in marked contrast to generalizations about effects of fire on arthropods derived from fire management of grasslands.
