Mike’s reason for this design is so that the stick has a slightly added front weight for a solid, consistent “throw” and transient sound. With the extra length, you can adjust how much front weight you’re implementing by slightly moving your fulcrum .580" point up or down on the stick. You’ll also get a fat sounding rimshot crack from the added front weighted taper. People talk about the Yardbirds as though Jeff Beck is still the guitarist, not you, despite everything you’ve done for them; giving up the easy-money session gigs that bought you your house by the river; gifting them one last ride on the merry-go-round with ahead-of-the-game hits like ‘Happening Ten Years Time Ago’, even as Mickie Most sucked the life out of them making them do codswallop like ‘Ha Ha Said The Clown’; sticking with them as their profile has slowly faded from view, along with their own self-worth.

A study of kit drummers' identities, practices and learning Gareth Dylan Smith Institute of Education, University of London Submitted for PhD 1 ABSTRACT Drummers have largely been neglected in scholarly literature on music and education, despite being active in large numbers in popular music and having an increasing presence in the music education arena. The study explores the identities, practices and learning of kit drummers in the UK from an emic perspective, using a mixed methodological approach with a focus on qualitative sociological enquiry drawing on interpretative phenomenological analysis and grounded theory. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 teenage drummers and 12 adult drummers; both age groups were interviewed to allow for consideration of whether adults' reflections on their formative years differ greatly from those of teenage drummers today. Secondary data were gathered from a brief questionnaire conducted with 100 more drummers to support and contextualize the richer interview data. Data were also taken from relevant biographies, audio/visual media and journalistic sources.

For Linda, Evie, Mollie and Michael – always. Author’s Note While I have been fortunate over the years to have enjoyed the company of various ex-members and/or former employees of Led Zeppelin, it should be born in mind at all times that this is an unauthorised biography, written objectively and with no undue pressure from any outside influence to do anything other than tell the story as I honestly see it. It should also be clearly understood that the italicised ‘flashback’ passages of the text are not the actual words of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Bonham, John Paul Jones and Peter Grant, nor are they actual quotes. Whilst they are all based on thorough biographical research, the facts of which can be found in the Notes & Sources section at the end of this book, the words themselves are the product of my imagination. "You Really Got Me": A Complete Charting Odyssey- How The Kinks Blew The Doors Off the British Invasion Against Fierce Competition And Scored Their First U.S. Hit Mark Teehan May 2016 Introduction As a powerful, iconic record, "You Really Got Me" both saved and launched the Kinks' illustrious career. As a musical statement, it was the embodiment of so many forces and emotions: rage, defiance, rebellion, perseverance, and survival. Most of all, it marked the culmination of a monumental struggle by the band to have the song recorded in a manner so that it sounded as they envisioned- original and reflective of their working-class roots, the way it did in their live concerts. Musically, "You Really Got Me" represented a dichotomy of sorts: its controlled, monolithic bass-heavy, strong percussive sound was built around a monster riff that stood in sharp contrast to the wild abandon and distorted, gritty tone of Dave Davies' unique, memorable guitar solo. This essay will initially set the stage by summarizing the creation of "You Really Got Me," its recording, its sonic characteristics, and progress on the UK charts. Afterwards, we will shift to the article's primary focus of analyzing the complex charting of the Kinks' landmark record in the U.S. Using the extensive array of surviving local radio station music surveys from pivotal markets across America, this writer will analyze the intricate connection between those local surveys and the national charts as they affected "You Really Got Me". Furthermore, in order to provide valuable insight into the American pop music industry of the mid-60's and a broader perspective into the commercial progress of the Kinks' record in the U.S., this writer will cover on a secondary basis the charting of another single from a rival British group.
