In the past five years, Marianne Sághy and István Perczel have been supervising, advising, challenging, encouraging, and supporting me unceasingly. Due to their help I had the wonderful chance of conducting a significant part of my research at the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, University of Lund, Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection, Institut für Byzantinistik und Neogräzistik in Vienna, Library of FOVOG in Dresden, and the Library of the Sorbonne University in Paris. In all these places I had found not only valuable materials for my dissertation, but also wonderful supervisors.     Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

    PASTOR’S MEANDERINGS 28 -29 DECEMBER 2019 FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS MARY AND JOSEPH REFLECTION FOR THE FEAST The Feast of the Holy Family is experienced by many as slightly intimidating. When the whole Church contemplates the domestic life of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, the shortcomings of our own family life are highlighted. Especially with the rise of martial breakdown and the decline in religious practice, the Holy Family can appear very distant indeed from our – perhaps painfully ‘unholy’ – families. Just look at today’s First Reading and compare your own family life, and the families you know. Are fathers honored by their children? Do mothers have their authority respected? Are parents gladdened and comforted by their children? Is the presence of the elderly warmly welcomed? And how about the virtues listed in the second reading, virtues which doubtless characterized the home of Jesus, Mary and Joseph: can we really say that our families are characterized by patience, forgiveness, humility, gentleness, obedience, mutual submission? If we treat this feast only as an examination of conscience, we might end up simply feeling inadequate. But a proper understanding of our baptism shows that this feast contains a consolation and a promise that lifts us out of our despair. Think about it: we have each been baptized into Christ. We are living members of Christ’s body. By our baptism we have been “called into one body”, not a generic body politic, but precisely the body of Christ. This has immense consequences: it means that, to the extent that we are joined to Christ by faith and love and the sacraments everything He did and suffered counts, mystically, as our very own.

Mathisen University of South Carolina The fifth century was a time of great change in the Mediterranean world. The classical, pagan world was being replaced by a new Christian one. And, in the west, there was a new barbarían presence to be dealt with as well. The élite classes around the empire dealt with these changes in different ways. In Gaul, aristocratic society carne under siege during the fifth century. The barbarían settlement in particular caused a crísis for Gallic aristocrats. The barbaríans competed with Gauls for social status, economic influence, and political office. Another problem for the Gauls was that there just were not very many of them. They were scattered far and wide, each focused on his own local interests. If Gallic aristocrats were to survive as a class, they were going to 203 have to devise ways to maintain aristocratic solidarity'. This study will argüe that, unlike other áreas of the empire, where aristocrats often contributed to their own decline by their competition with each other, Gallic aristocrats made common cause^. Few in number they may have been, but they compensated by finding novel means of creating unity from diversity and a new sense of aristocratic community. The Christian church played a significant part in the way that Gallo-Roman aristocrats redefined their roles. One does not normally think of Christianity as advocating an elitist ideal during this period, but the Gauls managed to find aspects of Christian beliefs and practices that were consistent with their own ideologies.

    Priscillian of Avila: Heretic or Early Reformer? by Brian Wagner Introduction The Lord Jesus Christ said, “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:37).1 Though He was speaking of the last judgment, the principle of letting someone be judged, even in this life, by his own testimony is a sound one. The Bible also speaks of establishing one’s testimony in the mouth of two or three witnesses (1 Timothy 5:19), which is to be a safeguard against a false witness damaging someone’s reputation. History is a study of testimony. The primary source material written by an individual is often the best evidence by which to judge what that person believed and taught. Other contemporaries to that individual could also be used to evaluate whether he was presenting a consistent and coherent message at all times and whether his actions matched his words. As with all historical judgment of this kind, the testimony by friends or foes must be weighed with at least some suspicion of bias. Priscillian of Avila, from the fourth century, has been designated by most of history as a Christian heretic. This conclusion, made by many of his contemporary foes, led to his beheading by the civil authorities. After his death in A.D. 365, his writings were searched out for destruction, along with anyone promoting his teaching. Copies of some of his writings still survive. Very early ones, judged as possibly made within just a century of Priscillian’s martyrdom, were recovered at the University of Würzburg by Georg Schepss in 1885.

They are traditionally regarded as the documents which introduced the Eastern monastic tradition to the West. The theme of radical poverty is repeated throughout his writings in an intentional way. However, scholarship has paid little attention to this and what it means in Cassian‘s spiritual theology. In this dissertation, I first locate Cassian within the early fifth-century Gallic monastic context. I argue that Cassian‘s emphasis on literal poverty is based on his observation and diagnosis of Gallic monastic practices. Next, I analyze poverty in the writings associated with Antony, Pachomius, and Evagrius who are Cassian‘s major influences. In spite of their differences, they arrive at a similar idea about poverty: radical poverty helps remove avarice and the removal of avarice is necessary for inner purification.
