Vincent PERSICHETTI Divertimento Eric Ewazen a Song from the Heart A Song from the Heart for Flute and Piano A beautiful cantabile song without words, A SONG FROM THE HEART has all of Ewazen’s expressive elegance, yet is performable by student-level players as well as on formal recitals. Originally composed for Trumpet and Piano, Ewazen created the flute transcription for Cindy VincentEric Anne Broz as the title track for her Albany CD including three Ewazen works. PERSICHETTIEWAZEN More Music for Flute by ERIC EWAZEN DivertimentoA Song from the Eternal Spring (A Hudson River Idyll) for 2 Flutes and Piano for String Quartet ETERNAL SPRING is a heartfelt eulogy for bassoonist Robin Sullivan, composed for her husband Robert Heart Sullivan. The work celebrates her life and music (including a quote from Mozart’s bassoon concerto) with poignant melodies and an uplifting spirit. ETERNAL SPRING (A Hudson River Idyll) was originally for Flute and Piano composed for Trumpet and Piano, and later adapted for 2 Flutes and Piano at the request of Marya Martin and Katherine Fink. Harmony in Blue and Gold for 3 Flutes (1st doubles Piccolo) and Alto Flute Ewazen’s monumental flute quartet was composed for Femme Flutale and premiered at the 2008 Mid- Atlantic Flute Fair. Its four movements were inspired by James McNeill Whistler’s “Peacock Room” at the Smithsonian Institution’s Freer Gallery – a room full of paintings featuring peacocks, and interior design showcasing blue and white porcelain, an integrated room that Whistler called “Harmony in Blue and Gold.” Ewazen’s ornate textures and impressionist moods express this unique environment through his musical world of sounds and lines. A Night in New Orleans: Sonatine for Solo Flute Eric Ewazen’s A NIGHT IN NEW ORLEANS is a tour-de-force: a 12-minute work for solo flute which is at once a three-movement sonatine, a colorful travelogue, a venture into New Orleans jazz and zydeco styles, and a showcase for the flutist’s versatility and endurance. The three movements (which may also be performed individually) are titled: I. 10:00pm, Bourbon Street, II. 12:00am, Jackson Square, and III. 2:00am, Café du Monde. It was commissioned by his wife, Marsha Caron, and was premiered at Dennis’s retirement party by our mutual friend Charles Schlueter, long-time principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony. A SONG FROM THE HEART is filled with lyricism and rich harmonies, as the trumpet line sings and soars over a rich accompaniment. The flute version of this work was written for my dear friend Cindy Anne Broz, for her Albany CD including first recordings of 3 of my flute pieces. Cindy was wonderful in helping me with my flute arrangement, as I heard her lovely, bright high register – hence my putting some key passages of the piece up an octave, shaping the phrase structures to flatter the lyrical flute sonorities. He incorporated twentieth-century harmonies into traditional forms and into classical piano writing. This paper seeks to emphasize the advantages of his music for piano pedagogy. Chapter Two concentrates on the composer’s life, compositional style, contribution and rewards, and it includes a short list of piano compositions. Chapter Three examines and analyzes four selected pieces by Persichetti: Little Piano Book, Piano Sonata No. 9, Poems for Piano No. 2 “Soft is the Collied Night,” and Four Arabesques, Op. 141, No. 1 Affabile. The Poem, the Arabesque, and the miniatures in Little Piano Book are smaller pieces, intended for amateur and intermediate pianists. The Ninth Sonata is a more substantial composition for advanced pianists. These pieces provide a broad image of Persichetti’s piano compositions. This study of selected works by Persichetti shows that his music is excellent pedagogical material for piano students as well as outstanding music to be performed in the concert hall.

    2015/16 Season: Constellations Persichetti @ 100 and Music from the Generation He Inspired 31ST SEASON 17 & 18 October, 2015 Curtis Institute of Music Philadelphia, PA Introduction: Vincent Persichetti @ 100 Vincent Persichetti was one of the most widely respected musicians of his generation. A prolific composer, brilliant educator and lecturer, and prodigious pianist, he composed more than 150 works in virtu- ally all genres and for virtually all performing media, while serving for 40 years on the faculty of the Juilliard School, many of them as chairman of the composition department. During his lifetime Persichetti influenced the musical lives of thou- sands of people from all walks of life, and his name came to signify a comprehensive musicianship virtually unparalleled among American composers. Countless young pianists were nurtured on his sonatinas and the Little Piano Book, while many other young instrumental students first experienced serious contemporary music through his works for band; church choirs turned to his Hymns and Respons- es for the Church Year as an inexhaustible resource, while many young composers have found his classic textbook Twentieth Century Harmony to be an indispensable tool; among professional soloists and conductors his sonatas, concertos, and symphonies stood among the masterworks of American music. Throughout his life Persichetti encouraged healthy, creative participation in music at all levels of proficiency, while shunning dogmas that advocated one composition- al approach at the expense of others. He was beloved and admired as a teacher, and was in great demand as a lecturer, using his comprehensive knowledge of the repertoire, extraordinary gift for improvisation, awe-inspiring piano technique, and mischievous wit to captivate audiences.
