Eternal Spring (a Hudson River Idyll) for 2 Flutes and Piano for String Quartet ETERNAL SPRING is a heartfelt eulogy for bassoonist Robin Sullivan, composed for her husband Robert Heart Sullivan. The work celebrates her life and music (including a quote from Mozart’s bassoon concerto) with poignant melodies and an uplifting spirit. ETERNAL SPRING (A Hudson River Idyll) was originally for Flute and Piano composed for Trumpet and Piano, and later adapted for 2 Flutes and Piano at the request of Marya Martin and Katherine Fink.

Harmony in Blue and Gold for 3 Flutes (1st doubles Piccolo) and Alto Flute Ewazen’s monumental flute quartet was composed for Femme Flutale and premiered at the 2008 Mid- Atlantic Flute Fair. Its four movements were inspired by James McNeill Whistler’s “Peacock Room” at the Smithsonian Institution’s Freer Gallery – a room full of paintings featuring peacocks, and interior design showcasing blue and white porcelain, an integrated room that Whistler called “Harmony in Blue and Gold.” Ewazen’s ornate textures and impressionist moods express this unique environment through his musical world of sounds and lines. a night in new Orleans: Sonatine for Solo Flute Eric Ewazen’s A NIGHT IN NEW ORLEANS is a tour-de-force: a 12-minute work for solo flute which is at once a three-movement sonatine, a colorful travelogue, a venture into New Orleans jazz and zydeco styles, and a showcase for the flutist’s versatility and endurance. It was commissioned by his wife, Marsha Caron, and was premiered at Dennis’s retirement party by our mutual friend Charles Schlueter, long-time principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony. A SONG FROM THE HEART is filled with lyricism and rich harmonies, as the trumpet line sings and soars over a rich accompaniment.

The flute version of this work was written for my dear friend Cindy Anne Broz, for her Albany CD including first recordings of 3 of my flute pieces. Cindy was wonderful in helping me with my flute arrangement, as I heard her lovely, bright high register – hence my putting some key passages of the piece up an octave, shaping the phrase structures to flatter the lyrical flute sonorities.
