HXC: Interview with Alex McCormick of PartyWolfe PartyWolfe are an unstoppable force making its way slowly into the Providence music scene. These fine gentlemen hail from New Bedford, Fall River and Providence, and share some members with notable bands like Math The Band The Band. PartyWolfe does exactly what their name says: They bring energy to any show they play. All the members have fantastic stage presence, but Mr. Alex McCormick, vocalist, is absolutely insane on stage. You’d think that this man was fueled by that cute energizer bunny. I was lucky enough to steal some time from Alex’s rad life to ask him some questions about PartyWolfe and his thoughts on music and performing live. Matt Morales (Motif): So, could you name the members in the band and what they do? Alex McCormick: I’m on vocals and am the whimsical weirdo. Andrew Victorino is Stick flipper/Skin Ripper. Dan Hetu plays what he’s coined the dumb guitar, aka the bass. Jeff McGowan is our lead guitar/main writer/pedal pusher, and Kyle Sousa likes to party. MM: How long have you guys been writing music together? Please tell me the guys in the band saw you singing at karaoke one drunken night and recruited you from there! AM: We’ve been writing together for a year and a half. Kyle re-discovered me making an exchange with my local liquor dealer in Fall River at Sterlings Package Store. We went out, partied in Providence and I drunkenly free-styled vocals over some instrumentals in his car.

  • From Footpaths to Freeways
From Footpaths to Freeways A Survey of Roads and Highways in Minnesota By Joel Katz, P.E., PTOE Minnesota Department of Transportation DEDICATION This book is dedicated to the thousands of Minnesotans — past and present — who have been involved in the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of the roads, streets, and highways of Minnesota, , as well as those who have played essential roles in such areas as financing, administration, research, education, and communications. These are the people who have been employed by the federal, state, and local governments; contractors; consultant firms; and educational institutions who have applied their professional and trade experience in developing a transportation system on which our way of life and economic viability has become so greatly dependent. Some of these employees lost their lives while performing construction, maintenance, and enforcement activities. All have worked diligently, loyally, and professionally — especially in emergency situations. • A History of Roads from Ancient Times to the Motor Age
A HISTORY OF ROADS FROM ANCIENT TIMES TO THE MOTOR AGE A THESIS Submitted in partiF.1 fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Civil Engineering by Herbert Reinhold Jacobson Georgia School of Technology Atlanta, Georgia 1940 APPROVED H 1 ' H WAY S OF THE WO MAN ' M Pi PREFACE The writer has attempted in this thesis to compile in a single volume the history of roads from ancient times to the motor age. With the introduction of the motor vehicle such a drastic change in design and methods of construction of high- ways took place that the field of highway engineering was com- pletely revolutionized. Priorto the motor age, the tempo of life was in tune with the fastest rate at which a horse could travel, and the given amount of articles of trade depended upon the ability of the beasts of burden to transport limited loads. Considering the total lack of mechanical equipment, the highway engineer of the past displayed considerable foresight and ingenuity in solving the problem of transport and his knowledge of the principles of engineering are worthy of utmost respect when we consider that hand labor was the only means at his command with which to overcome the same tre- mendous obstacles of nature which the modern engineer conquers with the assistance of mechanized giants. Volumes have been written on the subject of Roman roads, creating the impression that the Romans were the originators of road construction, but well built paved roads existed throughout the ancient world several thousand years before Rome crept out of the Pontine Marshes to sit on her Seven Hills and rule the world.

In this thesis, I analyze the significance of the themes mobility and place in Springsteen’s lyrics, and how these themes contribute to Springsteen’s perspective on American culture. There are a number of questions that I aim to answer: What is Springsteen’s perspective on the Open Road and on the American Dream? What do the recurring metaphors of the car and the road signify in his lyrics? Does his perspective change over the years? How do Springsteen’s lyrics fit in the genre of road narratives, among the likes of Walt Whitman, John Steinbeck, and Jack Kerouac? Keywords: Bruce Springsteen, mobility, place, road narrative, the Open Road, the American Dream, American mythology Kim van Helden / s4168968 / 4 Preface I have a lot to thank to my parents, and being a Bruce Springsteen fan is one of those things.

  • The Music Industry Is One of the Largest Cultural Industries and Makes a Significant Contribution to the World-Economy
THE CARIBBEAN MUSIC INDUSTRY Prepared by DR. KEITH NURSE Institute of International Relations The University of the West Indies St Augustine Trinidad & Tobago Prepared for Caribbean Export Development Agency Barbados April 2001 CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION The rapid growth of an intellectual property and copyright economy, suggests that there is a window of opportunity in the realm of cultural industries for Caribbean economies. The cultural industries sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world-economy. In the United States, cultural industries account for approximately 40% of copyright industries, which contributes 6% of GDP, 5% of employment and has become the number one export sector, surpassing rivals like the auto industry (IIPA 2000). The music industry is one of the largest cultural industries and makes a significant contribution to the world-economy. The rate of growth for this sector during the 1980s and 1990s was between three and five times more than the growth rate for world exports (UNCTAD/ILO 1995)1. For example, the music industry in the UK has proven to be dynamic and competitive, relative to other sectors in the economy (Lewis 1995). In developing countries, the music industry has long been valued for its contribution to cultural identity (Nettl, 1997; Robinson et. al., 1991). However, there have been few studies of the music industry from an economic standpoint, despite the fact that a large number of developing countries have been involved in the production and export of music. In the Caribbean the music industry, however, remains largely undocumented, with a few notable exceptions (Bourne, C and S.M.
