    Government of India CENTRAL GROUND WATER BOARD Ministry of Water Resources & Ganga Rejuvenation GROUND WATER YEAR BOOK 2016-2017 South Eastern Region Bhubaneswar September 2017 F O R E W O R D Groundwater is a major natural replenishable resource to meet the water requirement for irrigation, domestic and industrial needs. It plays a key role in the agrarian economy of the state. Though richly endowed with various natural resources, the state of Orissa has a long way to go before it can call itself developed. Being heavily dependent on rain fed agriculture; the state is very often exposed to vagaries of monsoon like flood and drought. The importance of groundwater in mitigating the intermittent drought condition of a rain-fed economy cannot be overemphasized. To monitor the effect caused by indiscriminate use of this precious resource on groundwater regime, Central Ground Water Board, South Eastern Region, Bhubaneswar has established about 1606 National Hydrograph Network Stations (NHNS) (open / dug wells) and 89 purpose built piezometres under Hydrology Project in the state of Orissa. The water levels are being monitored four times a year. Besides, to study the change in chemical quality of groundwater in time and space, the water samples from these NHNS are being collected once a year (Pre-monsoon) and analysed in the Water Quality Laboratory of the Region. The data of both water level and chemical analysis are being stored in computers using industry standard Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) like Oracle and MS SQL Server. This is very essential for easy retrieval and long-term sustainability of data.

It plays a vital role in India’s economic development and in ensuring its food security. The rapid pace of agricultural development, industrialization and urbanization has resulted in the over- exploitation and contamination of ground water resources in parts of the country, resulting in various adverse environmental impacts and threatening its long-term sustainability. The ground water available in the country, in general, is potable and suitable for various usage. However, localized occurrence of ground water having various chemical constituents in excess of the limits prescribed for drinking water use has been observed in almost all the states. The commonly observed contaminants such as Arsenic, Fluoride and Iron are geogenic, whereas contaminants such as nitrates, phosphates, heavy metals etc. owe their origin to various human activities including domestic sewerage, agricultural practices and industrial effluents. The quality aspects of ground water in the country is being monitored by the Central Ground Water Board through a network of about 15500 ground water observation wells, from which samples are collected and analyzed during the month of May every year. Ground water quality data is also being collected by the Board as part of its other activities such as ground water management studies, exploratory drilling programme, special studies on water quality etc.

Identification of plant species is the first and foremost criterion in planning for sustainable utilization of resources. The present study was conducted in five-forest division covering 12 villages having an average 345 households of Keonjhar district in Orissa on various NTFPs products. A total of 24 plant species of NTFPs are collected from the forest. The collected NTFPs were used in different purposes i.e. medicines, vegetables, essential oils, dye yielding, food items and other miscellaneous items by the tribal people.

Essel Mining & Industries Ltd. (EMIL) as part of statutory requirement is monitoring various environmental parameters in an around the Jilling Langalota Iron and Manganese Mines on continuous basis. EMIL has retained M/s. B S Envi-Tech Pvt Ltd. to carry out the Environmental monitoring in and around the Mine. It plays a key role in the agrarian economy of the state. Though richly endowed with various natural resources, the state of Orissa has a long way to go before it can call itself developed. Being heavily dependent on rain fed agriculture; the state is very often exposed to vagaries of monsoon like flood and drought. The importance of groundwater in mitigating the intermittent drought condition of a rain-fed economy cannot be overemphasized. To monitor the effect caused by indiscriminate use of this precious resource on groundwater regime, Central Ground Water Board, South Eastern Region, Bhubaneswar has established about 1511 National Hydrograph Network Stations (NHNS) (open / dug wells) and 89 purpose built piezometres under Hydrology Project in the state of Orissa. The water levels are being monitored four times a year. Besides, to study the change in chemical quality of groundwater in time and space, the water samples from these NHNS are being collected once a year (Pre-monsoon) and analysed in the Water Quality Laboratory of the Region. The data of both water level and chemical analysis are being stored in computers using industry standard Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) like Oracle and MS SQL Server. This is very essential for easy retrieval and long-term sustainability of data.

Productive investments fi nanced by loans can bring households out of poverty, reduce income and wealth disparities, and groups can serve as forums for collective action to improve gender relations and local governance. Over the last few years, savings and credit groups have also helped manage some important social programs of the Indian government, such as the distribution of foodgrains and school meals in state-run primary schools. There are two principal institutional forms through which group lend- ing takes place in the microfi nance sector of most countries. In the fi rst, spe- cialized institutions organize potential lenders into groups.
