Gecko Studio Gallery Newsletter

May June 2018

A group show following on from the highly successful 2016 exhibition ‘L’oeuvre des Oeufs – The Work of the Eggs’. There were quite a few sales back in 2016 but it was the critical acclaim that made it such a standout show. Record numbers of people came through the gallery and were delighted with the diverse and engaging display! Feedback was fantastic! We published a book of the exhibition which you can view online here (http://au.blurb.com/books/7314267-l-oeuvre-des-oeufs-the-work-of-the-eggs). Two years on and we have another great exhibition of Fish Creek ostrich eggs decorated and transformed. Photography doesn’t do justice of course, you really need to see the exhibition. Below are a few photos – more to come on our website. Artists in the show are - Ian Mooney, Helen Ritt, Gillian R Carpenter, Susan Quinn, Heather Shimmen, Kate Zizys, Alison Lester, Kim McDonald, Colin Suggett, Rosie Lyon, Regina Dudek, Sue Gilford, Jan Learmonth, Emma Morgan, Peter Cole,Deb Le Cerf, Annie Stark, Mark Reyment, Melanie Caple, Lisa Hocking, Andrew Hocking, Catherine Larkins, John Cooper, Kerry Spokes, Susan Purdy, Kimberly White, Sarah Dingwall, Anne Miller, Jane Power, Janie Frith, Helen Wilkinson, Grant Flather, Kevin Tilbey, Helen Sammonds, Abigail van Rooyen, Mandy Gunn, Luke Dearlove, Lian Casson, Frances Harrison

Gecko Studio Gallery News

● After the close of ‘The Work of the Eggs …continued’ exhibition (closes after the 16th of July), Gecko Studio Gallery and Headquarters Cafe will be closed for approximately a month. We have never closed like this before but we need to so as to recharge, carry out repair and reno works, give staff a holiday break and generally take a rest. Over the next two months we will advertise the dates and arrangements for framing etc. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

“Headquarters”, our café, is still going strong as the crazy times of the ‘high’ season slowly recede and we look forward to the influx of visitors during Easter. Headquarters is serving a unique wood roasted artisan coffee from (Ricci Method), delicious teas (Calmer Sutra), including fresh chai, hot chocolates and cold drinks. Headquarters also has a range of sweet and savoury foods to dine in or takeaway - we offer specialty salads (try our sushi bowl!) and delicious vegan raw slices from local supplier “A Seasoned Kitchen” - from amongst a range of culinary treats on offer. As cooler times approach we will be offering luscious soups and curries.

We are always looking at new treats and products so keep an eye on the Gecko / Headquarters Facebook page and on Instagram. Open 9am to 4pm, Thursday through to Monday, i.e. closed Tuesday & Wednesday

June Exhibitions

Recent Works: Peter Walker All work in this series of landscapes is derived from my imagination. The work is expressed through considered mistakes, random mark making, gesture and experience with an emphasis on intuitive energy and individual approach. Media: Oil, inks, pastel and pencil.

6

Shifting Perspectives: John Adam An exhibition of paintings in oil, watercolour & gouache. Almost all the paintings are recent, with a few exceptions and the majority have never been exhibited.

‘Upside Down Mountain’: Dylan Breninger & Amelie Camille ‘Upside Down Mountain’ is a collaborative multidisciplinary, rurally inspired philosophical exploration into parallel themes which are evident in both our work. We have begun enthusiastically exploring these shared themes in recent months, resulting in digitally edited mixed media drawings in photography, video and sound, sculptural paintings and mixed media on found object sculptures. The words Upside Down Mountain describe well the nature of our art and we invite an audience to think about these words while viewing the work. This exhibition, our first collaboration, is an experiment based on a hunch. One that if successful will produce further collaboration.

Wine of the Month

Red Door Estate is a boutique winery / vineyard nestled in the Mardan Hills of the Strezlecki Ranges of South Gippsland. John and Adrienne Neilson are the second proud owners of the vineyard, growing and producing Pinot noir, Sauvignon blanc and cool climate Shiraz.

Artist(s) of the Month

Kim Dodson - ’Painting has become a way for me to organise my thoughts.’ Kim has been drawing from a very young age, primarily in graphite. Over the course of many years she started and ‘almost’ completed 3 separate art courses. In 2013 she qualified as an Art Therapist and this marked a turning point in her art-making. She began using universal subject matter expressed through recognisable idioms to tell stories, adapting her graphite illustrations to acrylic paint, experimenting with shapes using bold progression of colour. Her ideas are driven by philosophical exploration finding inspiration in the people and events that touch her life. Kim has lived in South Gippsland for almost 25 years. This is her first exhibition.

● Meeniyan Pantry & Cellar - We have gathered and cooked exquisite foods and wines from across the globe….as well as our own kitchen… for all your dining needs. Choose one, or a few, wines from around the world and you have an unforgettable meal for the family or the guests from out of town. 10

● Sandy Point Music Club - A group of interested residents have recently banded together to form a Sandy Point Music Club. Their aim is to enhance the village atmosphere of Sandy Point by organising regular events at the Community Centre. The plan is to encompass different styles of music to cater for different ages and groups with the main focus on having social and fun evenings. This is very important in a community and Sandy Point is pretty well a perfect size to allow this to happen. As a result of running such events the group hopes to make a small profit with the proceeds being donated to worthy causes with some local connection. Profit from the first two events was given to the South Gippsland Hospital. The Music Group would love to hear from people with ideas and “special requests” for future events.
