Those of you arriving in the UK with a mobile handset and an international will notice that calls made to people inside and outside the country will be expensive.

If you already own a handset which is not locked to a specific network provider then you will be able to get a SIM card from a UK provider which you can use with your existing handset.

This option is useful if you already own a handset, only use your phone occasionally and mainly use it to Pay As receive calls. You can top up your phone with credit You Go online, over the phone or in many supermarkets and newsagents.

This option is not bound by the usual monthly payment phone deals, and you can cancel anytime so long as you provide 30 days’ cancellation notice. Usually SIM only deals attract good offers on free minutes, texting SIM and data for a fixed fee per month. Like the Pay As You Only Go option, you do not get a handset. You are likely to be billed on a monthly basis and you may be billed for any extra services you use, so it’s really important to keep track of your usage.

This is a fixed plan where you pay a set amount every month, usually for 12, 18, or 24 months. With this deal you will also be a given a handset of your choice - this is likely to benefit those who don't already have a handset or want to upgrade. This deal is useful if you Contract regularly call, text and use data on your phone. Plan However, elgibility for a Contract Plan is dependent on your credit rating, so you would need to check this first. Please also be aware that once you have committed to a contract you will be tied into this until the contract period is over. There are a variety of different options a phone provider can offer, and in some cases they can put together bespoke packages that are best suited to your needs, therefore we recommend you visit local phone shops who can discuss this with you.

International SIM Cards

You will have received a temporary SIM card during Orientation Registration, which you can use for as long or as little as you like.

This comes with £1 credit and 100MB of data. The SIM will work in any unlocked mobile phone. If you have a 4G enabled handset you will be able to activate 4G with this SIM.

However, different network providers will provide different rates depending on where you will be calling - therefore it's recommended you research a number of providers to understand the best deal for you.

The nearest place to top up your Lebara SIM is the Students' Union shop in the Cockcroft building, or the local NISA shop, which is approximately 2 minutes away. Unlocking your Phone

There are a number of ways in which you can top up your phone with credit if you have chosen to Pay As You Go. There should be instructions with your SIM card detailing these options, which usually requires calling a number and paying with your bank card.
