  • WFO Shares Child Summer Safety Tips WFO Is Sharing Tips on How to Keep Kids Safe
Issue 61 – May 2014 WFO Shares Child Summer Safety Tips WFO is sharing tips on how to keep kids safe. An unfortunate reality is that every year, thousands of children go missing. In cases of child abduction, the FBI works to assist in the investigation and speedy recovery of the missing child. In cases of child exploitation, an individual often targets a child for the purpose of abuse or violence. This targeting can be done in person by an acquaintance or a stranger or it can be done online through social websites and chat rooms. To help in child abduction recoveries, the FBI has developed the Child ID app which provides an effective way for parents and guardians to keep their child’s pictures and information on hand in case he or she goes missing. The app also includes safety tips for parents to help keep their kids out of harm’s way. The app is free and, in the event a child goes missing, parents and guardians can quickly email the photos and information to authorities. No information about you or your child will be collected or stored by the FBI. To download the Child ID app, go to iTunes App Store on your iPhone or Play Store on your Android phone. As the school year draws to a close, many parents are planning for their children’s summer activities. Whether a child is spending the summer at home with parents, a nanny or tutor, or away from home at a summer camp, the safety tips will help ensure that children are being cared for under the watchful eyes of trusted and vetted adults.

Federal Bureau of Investigation, National Gang Intelligence Center 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment [NOTE: This is a cached text version of the report obtained after the report was removed from the FBI website. It is missing all of the illustrations that appeared in the original report.] Preface The National Gang Intelligence Center (NGIC) prepared the 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment (NGTA) to examine emerging gang trends and threats posed by criminal gangs to communities throughout the United States. The 2011 NGTA enhances and builds on the gang-related trends and criminal threats identified in the 2009 assessment. It supports US Department of Justice strategic objectives 2.2 (to reduce the threat, incidence, and prevalence of violent crime) and 2.4 (to reduce the threat, trafficking, use, and related violence of illegal drugs). The assessment is based on federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement and corrections agency intelligence, including information and data provided by the National Drug Intelligence Center (NDIC) and the National Gang Center. Additionally, this assessment is supplemented by information retrieved from open source documents and data collected through April 2011. Scope and Methodology In 2009, the NGIC released its second threat assessment on gang activity in the United States. The NGIC and its law enforcement partners documented increases in gang proliferation and migration nationwide and emerging threats. This report attempts to expand on these findings. Reporting and intelligence collected over the past two years have demonstrated increases in the number of gangs and gang members as law enforcement authorities nationwide continue to identify gang members and share information regarding these groups.

  • Gang Awareness Guide (PDF)
Gang Awareness Guide As gangs become an increasing issue in our society, education is the key to recognizing their activity and understanding what they are about. However, when discussing gangs, a working definition must be developed. Gangs are three or more individuals, using the same name, sign or symbol who commit criminal acts individually or as a group to further their agenda. The following information is not exhaustive in describing gangs and their background, but is a basic framework to educate concerned community members. Crips: This street gang originally started in South Central Los Angeles in the 1960’s. Stanley “Tookie” Williams met with Raymond Lee Washington to unite local gang members to battle neighboring street gangs. Today, the Crips are one of the largest and most violent gangs, involved in murders, robberies, drug dealing and many other criminal pursuits. Crips identify with the color blue. Their biggest rivals are the Bloods and disrespect in many ways - calling them “slobs”. Crips call themselves “Blood Killas” and cross the letter “b” out or leave it off altogether. Crips do not use the letters “ck” as it denotes “Crip Killer” and substitute it for “cc” (as in “kicc” for “kick”). While traditionally African-American, today’s Crip membership are multi-ethnic. Bloods: The Bloods were formed to compete against the Crips. Their origins stem from a Piru street gang (initially a Crip set) who broke away during an internal gang war and allied with other smaller street gangs to form the present day Bloods. Since the Bloods were originally outnumbered 3 to 1 by the Crips, they had to be more violent.

2008 Annual Report Anne Milgram, Attorney General of New Jersey This page was intentionally left blank OAG Annual Report Overview Dear Governor Corzine, members of the State Legislature and citizens of New Jersey: 08 Staffed by civilian employees and sworn law enforcement officers, the Department of Law and Public Safety is a diverse agency that touches millions of lives each day. At the Department, we are responsible for enforcing the law and ensuring the safety of those who live, travel, work and play in New Jersey. But our responsibilities do not end there. Our department also serves as chief provider of legal advice and legal representation to agencies of state government. This dual role makes us unique, and our mission doubly challenging. Among other things, the department provides regular State Police patrols to ensure that New Jersey roads and communities are safe. We conduct criminal investigations and prosecutions. We develop crime prevention and anti-violence strategies. We provide emergency management and homeland security related services. At the same time, we defend state statutes and, where necessary, file lawsuits aimed at safeguarding children, combating fraud, protecting consumers, preserving natural resources, and achieving other important outcomes on behalf of New Jersey citizens. In 2008, the department’s work included many actions and accomplishments designed to enhance the quality of life in our state, strengthen public confidence in government and, above all, make neighborhoods safer. In July, for example, we launched a major initiative in Camden city designed to cut down on violence and street crime. Done in partnership with Camden police and city government officials, the effort was part of Governor Jon S.
